If the Exodus were ‘only’ the Passover, would the people ever feel safe or fear Pharaoh’s power to reach out and snatch them back? God guides even though we may find his ways perplexing; God is present (here very visibly in the cloud) even when we feel the jeopardy that the enemy might recapture us. But our God saves completely; defeating our enemy on his own for his glory. The people need only stand firm and be still (v13-14), and put their trust in him (v31). In Christ we too are brought safely.

As promised, God will judge the gods of Egypt (12.12) and the people who worship them; but Israel are not innocent (cf Josh 24.14). He is saving his own firstborn son (4.22-23), but no one is ever automatically safe. They are saved from God by God. Only this God who judges can provide the substitute; a costly and perfect lamb taking their place. (1 Cor 5.7) And they are to remember this always: the Passover meal, which becomes the Lord’s supper, which points us to the future wedding feast of the lamb [with every tribe & nation].

The plagues demonstrate God’s power over his creation, and over the so-called gods of Egypt (cf Deut 32.17, Ps 106.36-37 false gods or ‘demons’ ESV). His judgement. But also his mercy: each plague is limited in scope and time, and he is gracious to Israel. His purpose is to rescue his people, but also so that his name will be proclaimed in all the earth (9.16, see also Rom 9.17-18) and that they might tell future generations that they might know he is Lord (10.2).

God’s rescue is never merely from slavery to freedom, but to Sonship. Moses is still fearful as he sets out to obey God’s command. And God tells him how hard things will get for his children, and the terrible cost to release slaves and make this his firstborn son. There will have to be a Passover because there will have to be a price paid and a substitute. But it seems Moses has been casual in his daily life/family about the sign of God’s grace (v24-26); we must never be casual about the cross.

God is not someone fallen sinners can approach. But this is a God who comes to his creatures and reveals himself personally: calling Moses by name; disclosing his name/character; his faithfulness to his promises to/relationship with the patriarchs; his saving purposes (I have seen, heard, know, will deliver, will bless). There is a mystery of how Moses can approach- but-not-approach. But even here, God’s holiness looks like a generous, spreading goodness – not “melancholy, morose, sour, and unpleasant… but what is sweet and ravishingly lovely” (Jonathan Edwards). And this pre-incarnate vision of Jesus points forward to his own “I am” sayings, and his revealing the mystery.

God’s children are trapped in the land of slavery and death. And often God is silent and it looks to us that he is doing nothing, especially in the face of secular (spiritual) powers/despots. But God is still in control and on the throne. He delights to subvert by working through weakness (the irony of 1.16 – Big Man Pharoah is mostly undermined by women throughout this story; a fragile baby, ironically raised in his own household.) God always works through what looks like weakness for his glory to save his children (2 Cor12.9). And his kindness (1.20) and compassion (2.25) to his children guarantee the ’strong man’ Pharaoh will be defeated.

In his last chapter, Paul pulls together all he has said and applies it: in the Lord’s strength we must stand firm on the ground Christ has won for us. That means we have a spiritual battle to face, but it is one we wage wearing Christ’s own armour.

Christians no longer follow the prince of the power of the air; we have a whole new life in Christ. Paul wants Christians to know that new life and be strong in it: that way we can be what we truly are in Christ.

Paul prays for Christians to be strengthened to believe and know the magnificent and all- surpassing love of Christ. Only that way will we have all the fullness of God for our fierce battle in the heavenly places.

We can never be strong in the Lord if we think we need to depend upon ourselves or ever earn his favour. In this passage, Paul shows how our new life does not depend on us in any way but is all a gift of his bottomless kindness.
