Here we are at the beginning of 2020. And as is always the case there are lots of questions about this new year.
Will we be enough? Will we achieve enough? Will we have enough? Earn enough? Save enough? Will it be a good year, or a hard year? Will it be the first year of something new or the last year of everything?
I wish I knew, but I only know one thing for sure about 2020: in a blink it will be 2021.
I’ll confess to you, I hate that time moves so fast. I mean, damnit, are we already two full decades into the 21st century?
What I hate even more than time moving so fast is the brutal truth that I don’t have an endless supply of it. None of us do. And the older I get the more it becomes painfully obvious that all my resolutions, my dreams, my goals … they’re just not all going to get done before the clock runs out.
It’s heartbreaking, but there is a good in it. Knowing how short life is has me constantly questioning and reevaluating my priorities. And year after year, as the time gets shorter, that process always seems to bring me back to one truth, one fundamental resolution, and here it is:
Dean, regardless of what comes next, life is right here, right now, don’t forget to live it.
They say life is what happens while you are busy making other plans. It’s true. So, I invite you to join me this year. Let’s hold each other accountable to actually live the life we always seem to be busy getting ready for.
Read that book. Ride that bike. Take that walk. Start that project. Get together with that friend.
And for God’s sake, this year say what you’ve been meaning to say. Say the words with the biggest magic in them. Say, “thank you.” Say, “good job.” Say, “I love you.” Say, “I forgive you.” Say, “I’m sorry.”
Go for the big magic because here’s the encouraging truth … no matter how little time we have, all of life can be lived in a single moment if we just remember to show up for it.
So of course we want all those other things, but when we stand here again in 2021, just 365 days from now, it won’t matter what happened. It won’t matter what we achieved or didn’t. It won’t matter who gets elected. It won’t matter what we have or don’t have.
When we stand here again in 2021, just 365 days from now, all that will matter is whether we remembered to show up.
And despite whatever may come we can look back on this year and count it a success if, in the midst of it all, we remembered to show up, and build ourselves a beautiful life.
