No matter who you are or what you believe, there is something undeniably magical about this time of year. There’s an extra bit of power in the air, yes? Everything is magnified a bit. Which can be especially wonderful or especially not wonderful. If we find a way to access that magic it makes us feel great. If we feel like we’re not a part of it … well … it hurts more than usual, and we resent it.
But the magic is palpably there nonetheless. When the airwaves are filled with singing, and everywhere there are messages of good cheer, and suddenly the otherwise dark night glows with twinkling lights … it’s undeniably magical. Even when we know the magic came from us.
But have you ever wondered exactly what that magic is? I have. I think at least part of it is unexplainable (otherwise it wouldn’t be magic) but I also think there are some clues.
Whether your holidays are all about family and the giving of gifts, or whether they’re attached a faith story like when all hope was gone the lamp stayed lit, or that God came down in the flesh to struggle and suffer with us, or whether you simply celebrate that Nature herself has brought enough food and warmth and light to last throughout the darkest days of the year,
Boil it all down and what I think we love best about the holidays, the real magic, is a message of hope. Not just any message of hope, but the hope that soothes our deepest fears.
Fear that the darkness is here to stay.
That we are not going to make it through.
That we are in this all alone.
That’s why we want a warm home. That’s what we draw near to friends and family. That’s why we sing and dance and feast and string lights out into the cold night. To be human is to feasr, but to be human is to hope against our fears. And that struggle—tension between hope and fear—that’s where the magic is kindled.
Our fears of what life could be are exactly why a full belly, a warm drink, a soft pair of socks, and a glowing fire are all especially good right now.
Because we hope.
Hope is the reason for the season.
And my hope for you is that you find your hope too.
And if you find you are one of those with an abundance of magic this year, share it. Find a way to spread hope to those who need it most. Find a way to let someone know that despite whatever stands in their way you will help them find a way to see through the darkness and believe again.
Believe that one day the light will return.
That you are going to make it through.
That you are not in this all alone.
That even in the dark there is hope to build yourself a beautiful life.
