Went to hear a friend sing last night. She’s really good. She’s a member of a very talented 80’s cover band out in Ventura County. Doing that kind of thing is a lot of fun, but also—and I’m trying to be painfully honest here—it’s usually a weird experience to watch my peers get a few beers in them and start to dance to the music of my youth.
I close my eyes and find the music evoking all sorts of memories and sensations in me which still seem like they happened yesterday, but then I open them and what I see in front of me are all these graying, somewhat pear shaped, not at all young people up on the dance floor. And there’s a jarring disconnect between what I’m hearing and what I’m remembering and what I’m seeing.
Now, I’m not making fun of anyone. “I Want You to Want Me” by Cheap Trick is a great song, and will always be a great song, and deserves to be danced to. It’s just, has it really been 41 years? It’s ironic that most of us think nothing much is happening on any given day, but life moves so fast.
Then I woke up this morning to hear about another mass shooting, less than 14 hours from the last one, and it all kind of piled up in my heart and I once again found myself with that all too familiar dull ache inside, shaking my head, no words.
Sometimes it seems deeply unjust to me that our species is born with such capacity to taste and embrace and ponder the beauty and mystery and vastness of life, but then, in what seems like just a few moments later, it’s over. Life moves so fast. Even the longest of lives is too short, and it baffles me, given how little time we have, that any of us would waste a single moment indulging our fears and our egos and letting them drive us into the bitterness of anger or petty meanness, the shallowness of greed, the cruelty of racism, or the idiocy of violence.
I have no words about these events. I ran out of words for them a long time ago. And you don’t need my commentary because in the days to come there will be more words spoken about it than any of us wish to hear.
I only want to remind you of this … life is so big, and so short. You blink and your youth is decades away. So, given that reality, why would any of us waste a single moment of it being anything other than the very best version of ourselves. Imagine what would the world look like, just today, if just today, for just a few hours, we all decided to have the courage to be the best version of ourselves. I know this, if we do that there won’t be any more news today like what we awoke to this morning.
Someone asked me last Sunday where my spirituality comes from. That’s a big question with lots of answers, but I think at least one honest way to sum it up is this:
Life is so big. Life is so short. There’s only so much time to become the best version of you.
Today’s news makes me sick to my stomach. And the only way I know how to respond is to get busy living. I hope you’ll join me in that today. Get out there, be the best version of yourself today, and build yourself a beautiful life.
