I tried my best at the top of the show to answer the question of why Millennials are bringing house plants back. And the closest I came to an answer was “longing.” So I’ll confess now, that was kind of a cheat, because longing is such a pervasive part of what it means to be human it’s often the answer behind a lot of what we do.
As far as we know, unlike any other species on this planet we seem to be born into longing. It’s as if even from childhood we seem to be looking for something we’ve lost but aren’t quite sure what it is. CS Lewis thought it was heaven or Eden we are all longing for.
“… this desire for our own far off country … the inconsolable secret we cope with by calling it names like Nostalgia … the secret we cannot name it because it is a desire for something that has never actually appeared in our experience … they are … the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.”
Is it Eden we’re longing for? Is is truly something we’ve lost, or something we’ve yet to find? Perhaps it’s because we are able to imagine perfection, and because our lives are so very imperfect, that we long for what we don’t have. I honestly don’t know, because I’m busy looking for it just like you.
But I suspect it goes deeper than we think. I think what most of us are looking for in the world is what we hope to find in ourselves. We embrace beautiful things and living things and growing things because it means we hope to find some of that inside of us. Which makes them a kind of roadmap or a compass to help us find our way. And I’m totally 100% ok with that. I love maps. And I love a good compass even more. I’ve had a compass rose designed into our house for years and years. And there will always be one. All we need to remember is the compass is not the destination, and the map is not the journey.
Out of all the living things on this planet, human beings are the only makers of maps. I’d like to think that’s because we’re explorers. And we are. But also, I sometimes wonder if we make maps because we are looking for something, longing for something, and have such a difficult time finding our way home.
Well, whatever it is you are longing for, I hope you find it. My guess is, most of what we’re looking for is at home. And I suspect that the journey home is one we take mostly on the inside. Once you find yourself, you find your people, then you’re home. Not an easy journey to take. One filled with longing. But at the end of the day, the only journey that really matters.
So take a step out your front door today. Go discover something amazing about the world that just might be something amazing inside of you. Then bring it home. And use it to keep building yourself a beautiful life.
