February 28, 202417 News @ Sunrise 02/28/2024Some of today's top storiesWe begin with breaking news from overnight out of east Bakersfield... where crews are battling another train fire this morning.You can see firefighters... sliding that door open to find a raging fire inside the train. This is on the railroad along Edison Highway... near the East California Avenue intersection. Crews first got word of the fire shortly after 2 A-M. No word yet on how it started... or if anyone was hurt. This is the second time in the past week that a train has caught fire in Bakersfield.An investigation is underway this morning into a crash that left a man dead and two others hurt in Shafter. It happened yesterday morning on Zerker Road... near 7th Standard Road. Four cars were involved. One man died at the scene. Two other drivers were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.Three people were sent to the hospital... after being exposed to chemicals in Boron. The Kern County Hazmat team was called to this scene Monday morning. Investigators say it all started after someone was driving in a car... with a bunch of Mercury spilled inside. After self-decontaminating in the shower of their home... that person was taken to a hospital. Two other people inside the home were also sent to the hospital as a precaution.Still no word on the cause of a fire at a business in east Bakersfield. It happened yesterday morning on Niles Street. When crews arrived, there was heavy smoke coming from the front of the building. Firefighters went room to room battling the flames. They also cut holes in the roof to allow the heat and smoke from the fire to escape. No injuries were reported. A Bakersfield man will spend a decade behind bars for selling pills -- laced with fentanyl -- that killed a woman. It happened back in 20-20. Posecuters say the woman who Marcus Randall sold those pills to... died from an overdose. Randall pleaded guilty to the federal charges last April. And this week, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. ...more16minPlay

For democrats, the battleground state could be a barometer for president Biden who faces severe criticism there for his handling of the Israel-hamas war. NBC's brie Jackson is in WashingtonWe're learning more on what *was* a major concern for some voters in the Central Valley. Many voters who live in California's 20th Congressional District might have thought they were seeing double after receiving not one but *two* ballots in the mail in recent weeks. But this morning...the Kern County Elections Division is reiterating... those ballots are *not* identical. They are two *separate* ballots. One is for the March 5th Primary Election. The other is for the March 19th Special Election to fill the remainder of the term for Kevin McCarthy's vacated seat in congressOver on the Kern River Parkway... reports of assault, theft or the occasional bobcat sighting -- although rare, have happened. February 26, 202417 News @ Sunrise 02/26/2024Some of today's top storiesInvetigators this mornig are trying to figure out what caused a train to catch fire in downtown Bakerwfield.Crews raced to this scene near Mechanics Bank Arena Saturday night.Investigators say when they arrived... the conductor had no idea the train was on fire.It was found stopped under a bridge of Highway 99... and had to be moved to another location before fire crews could work on containment.Police say the blazed caused half a million dollars in damages No injuries were reportedAnd it's on to Michigan -- with the South Carolina primary in the rearview mirror... Nikki Haley is focused on the Great Lakes State.The former U-N ambassador is vowing to stay in the race -- despite losing in her home state to former president Donald Trump.But Haley's fight will become only more difficult as a major donor network pulls its support.Meanwhile, the upcoming primaries will test president Biden's ability to navigate dissent within his own party over his response to Israel's war with Hamas.NBC's Alice Barr has the latest from Capitol HillGovernor Gavin Newsom had some strong words for Trump... following his South Carolina primary win. Newsom labeled Trump as - quote - "weakness masquerading as strength" during an interview on "Meet the Press" yesterday. The governor would go on to say that the former president was - quote - "unhinged" and is a weaker candidate than four years ago. A Trump spokesperson said of the interview, that quote, "Gavin is just mad he hasn't found a way to kick crooked Joe Biden off the ticket so he can run."And Biden is expected to meet with four top congressional leaders at the White House tomorrow...The top four leaders include house speaker Mike Johnson, senate majority leader Chuck Schumer, house minority leader Hakeem Jeffries and senate minority leader Mitch McConnell.The White House says Biden will press lawmakers on passing an emergency aid package for Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific...The $95 billion dollar national security package cleared the senate on a 70 to 29 vote earlier this month -But Speaker Johnson has been resistant to put up the aid bill for a vote in the house.President Biden will also push for legislation to avert a looming government shutdown ahead of next month....more17minPlay

Bakersfield Assemblymember Vince Fong and Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux on the right... local educator Marisa Wood and security officer Andy Morales on the left. They touched on national issues like immigration and fentanyl at the border to Central Valley concerns like water storage Other topics included age limits for presidential candidates... homelessness... and high-speed rail. Another pedestrian is dead this morning following a hit-and-run crash.It happened around 9-30 at the intersection of Columbus and Rice Street. When officers arrived... they say they found a man dead in the middle of the road. The driver involved in the crash had already fled. Investigators say the man was hit in an "unmarked crosswalk." An investigation continues this morning. By our count... this was 9-th pedestrian fatality in Kern County so far this year. Last year, there were 54.An apparent stabbing has left a man dead in east Bakersfield. It happened around 7:30 on Haley and Columbus Streets, near the Social Security Administration office. According to at least one witness, a man was stabbed. Emergency crews could be seen performing chest compressions on the victim for close to an hour. An ambulance that was called to the scene left without the victim. We're still waiting to hear back from police this morning. a disturbing discovery in Oildale... where the body of a man was found on a middle school campus. The Kern County Sheriff's Office says they the call just after 7 A-M yesterday. Deputies then found the body on the grounds of Standard Middle School. The coroner will be conducting an exam to determine how the man died....more19minPlay

Former President Donald Trump is endorsing Bakersfield Assemblyman Vince Fong. 17's Jenny Huh has more.The four candidates seeking to win the U.S. House of Representatives seat once filled by Kevin McCarthy will take to the debate stage tomorrow night in a bid to win your vote. The candidates will debate live in the KGET TV studios starting at 7 P-M. The debate will also be streamed live on KGET-dot-com and the KGET 17 News app. This is the first televised debate among the four candidates who qualified for the debate stage: Assemblymember Vince Fong, Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux, Marisa Wood and Andy Morales.Nikki Haley says she's not dropping out of the republican race for president any time soon. The former South Carolina governor spoke on the state of the race Tuesday. She made it clear that even though she significantly trails Trump in the polls... she intends to keep her campaign going. Speaking at her alma mater, clemson university, haley ripped into the former president... Calling him a - quote - "disaster" for the G-O-P and "more unstable and unhinged" than when he first ran. The latest Emerson College poll shows Trump leading by 23 points in Haley's home state. Experts say her strategy is to outlast the former president and his ongoing legal issues.Ventura County continuing to get hit hard by this latest storm.But, along with the rain, this funnel cloud was spotted spinning in the foothills around four o'clock yesterday afternoon.The national weather service says it did not make contact with the ground... and there was no damage.Two men have been charged with murder in the Kansas City Chiefs rally shooting. One of those men is 24-year-old Lyndell Mays. Mays told investigators that he was - quote - "just being stupid" when he got into a verbal argument with another person. Investigaots say that arugment escalated quickly... leading Mays to draw a handgun. Shortly after a shootout ensued. Mays has been charged with murder and other felony charges.Turning to a bizarre situation out of Virginia... involving a crash... a hospitalization... and an ambulance being stolen.It started when the suspect was one of five people involved in this dramatic crash involving a stolen car. The suspect -- identified as 32-year old Rickey Lowe -- survived the crash, left treatment in a hospital gown with an I-V still in his arm... and stole an ambulance. This photo from inside the ambulance was provided by police with a time-stamp of 8:45 Monday night. Authorities say the Lowe ditched the ambulance about 40 minutes later and fled on foot. We're told by authorities at least one shooting victim is in the hospital. 17's Rob Hagan has the latest.This is an 8-foot tall statue of Sinclair's famous green dinosaur. It's on its way back to where it belongs... at the gas station on the corner of Coffee and Hageman roads.... after being *stolen.* Officers found it still in one piece at a home in Oildale... where they also found stolen cars, gas pumps and car readers. Police say the card readers have been linked to a series of thefts at gas stations throughout Kern County. A man was arrested on several burglary charges. The green dinosaur statue... has a price tag of $100-thousand dollars. Roads are turning to rivers in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. Heavy rain has triggered flooding in the area. You can see torrents of fast moving flood water winding their way through the canyons. Many of these areas are no strangers to flooding, but this year's storms have been especially brutal.Ski resorts close to home and across the state are loving every bit of this weather. Up in Mammoth Mountain, 16 to 18 inches of new snow and more is expected. Members of the resort say more than nine feet of snow has accumulated this month, which has the potential of extending the ski season.A Texas student was shot by police after bringing a gun to school. Police say they responded to an active shooter call yesterday morning at a charter school. According to school officials, a student was discovered to have brought a firearm onto campus. Police say when they arrived they attempted to negotiate with the student... But during the negotiation, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Police say no other students or officers were injured... and the suspect was transported to a local hospital. First responders say they are grateful the incident was not much worse....more15minPlay

KCSO says deputies found the two men down with gunshot wounds Saturday night on Tatum Street. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene... the other died at the hospital. No suspects have been named at this time. The investigation continues this morning.An elderly man was killed in a crash on Highway 14 in Mojave. It happened Friday between two cars heading in opposite directions.C-H-P says the cars collided while one of them was making a left turn into a grocery store parking lot.The 84-man-old man -- riding in the passenger seat of that car making a trun -- was killed.Officers say he was not wearing a seatbelt.Two Delano teenagers -- accused of stealing cars and a puppy -- are under arrest. Delano police say two shops in town -- Truji's Automotive and Electric Repair -- were vandalized.Two cars -- along with keys, tools and a 3-month-old puppy named Brownie were reported stolen.Officers say they were able to recover the stolen vehicles and property.Also, Brownie was located unharmed and returned to his owner.Bakersfield Police are searching for a man, they say is responsible for a string of burglaries around town.. Detectives say the man on your screen was caught on video burglarizing a business on 19-th Street last month.Days later, police say the same man was seen on 18-th Street, stealing from a separate business.They believed he's 20 to 30 years old... and 5 feet 11inches tall.Police are also asking for help identifying a vandalism suspect.Detectives say this man smashed the window of a business on 19th Street last month. He's believed to be in his 20's... with short black hair, a black goatee and beard.He was also riding a black electric scooter....more21minPlay

These are photos shared by KCSO.You can see rows and rows on marijuana plants inside a warehouse.This is on Getty Street.KCSO says more than 25-hundred plants and 500 pounds of processed marijuana were seized.Multiple assault weapons were also confiscated. KCSO says the 35 men arested... are all from parts of Mexico.The search is on this morning for a man wanted for murder. Police say they are looking for 25-year-old Christopher Nathaniel Kenney.He's accused of shooting and killing another man and wounding 4 others in south Bakersfield back in 20-18.Police say he should be considered armed and dangerous.If you see him... call 9-1-1.First responders had to use the jaws of life in central Bakersfield.This happened yesterday afternoon on Holtby Court.The car somehow ran off the road and into a fence.One of our viewers, Brandon Barazza, sent us this video.He says two men were taken away by an ambulance.We're still waiting to hear back from investigators.A woman placed in handcuffs and multiple children removed from a Southeast Bakersfield home on Valentine's Day in an overnight incident that is blowing up social media.17's Rob Hagan has the story....more17minPlay

It happened yesteray morning at the intersection of California and Chester Avenues. Bakersfield Police say a truck ran a red light and crashed into three other cars, leaving one person hospitalized. The driver was taken into custodyKSCO is sharing these photos.You can see the person... wearing a black Chicago Bulls hoodie... holding the gun.This happened at Derrick's Liquor on Niles Street.KCSO says a second person was involved in the robbery, but did not provide a description or release images.If you know anything about this case... you're urged to call the sheriff's office.There are new developments in the homicide of a 14-year-old boy.The shooting happened last month at a home on Provincetown Avenue in southwest Bakersfield.Court documents say on a Friday night... a 33-year-old man picked up six teens around midnight without their parents knowledge.The documents also say twice within a week, a pistol owned by the man accidentally fired while teens played with it.The first time, no one was hit.But during the second time, the teen holding the gun suffered a wound to his hand, and the bullet entered the neck of Jayden Jackson.Jackson died.Making headlines around town. The City of McFarland is the latest municipality to join the list of cash-strapped cities in Kern County opening their doors to commercial cannabis. 17's Mikhala Armstrong reports, the move is not without controversy....more19minPlay
