In a cultural moment where hatred, viciousness, and violence are being stoked, celebrated, and encouraged the parable of the Good Samaritan challenges us to redefine who we call our neighbors. This story invites us to reimagine what it looks like to love others as Jesus truly meant it and what it means to be a safe place for people to recover from religious trauma and rediscover new life.

Many of the resolutions and aspirations set this time of year are born out of a place of not enough, and the general tone around January sounds like striving, and pushing, and straining. Is there another way to approach the new year that doesn't expect so much try-harder energy? We look this morning to the famous story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 for the answer.

Many of us approach the end of this season feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and defeated from the endless tug of war on our attention the holidays seem to demand. We believe Christmas has something to say to our striving, something to offer our overwhelm and the invisible burdens we all carry during this time of year and every other day of the year too. The invitation of Christmas is to behold – this kind of focusing, this narrowing our attention, this drawing near to marvel at the miracle of God with us.

It's Week 3 of Advent: Joy. We explore Zechariah's song in Luke 1 as a means to understanding the path of Joy that the Christmas story lays out for us. Zechariah's own darkness and uncertainty left him waiting for a breakthrough. As we each wait in our own way, today is a reminder that joy is available to us in both great times and in dark times: sometimes it just takes the right bait to get us to reach for it.

Peace is something we all crave, but it often feels elusive and short-lived. This week's passage invites us to reimagine peace not as a sense of calm or tranquility, but as a revolution of the heart and an invitation to the humble way of Jesus that opposes the arrogant, rejects violence, and redefines the "rich".

This is our first week in our Advent series as we anticipate the coming of Jesus, celebrated at Christmas. Waiting tends to bring out the worst in us. It makes us anxious, irritable, and mean. Advent invites us to reimagine our waiting – it offers us a different perspective that waiting doesn’t have to end with the worst in us, but that God can use waiting to form the best in us.

Hope is a paradox. It's the unrelenting belief that your current reality is not the end of the story and the bravery to acknowledge with uncompromising honesty that this part of the story we're in now is horrible. Without facing the ugly facts, hope is just cruel optimism, and without the courage to dream that things could be different, facing the overwhelming darkness is soul crushing hopelessness. Jesus is able to hold both of these things in view – the pain of this world and the perfection of Heaven…and that is what we see acted out in the story of Jairus' daughter and the bleeding woman from Luke 8.

Jesus was the king of speaking in metaphors. Today, we explore what soil and light have to do with being his followers - being hearers and doers of the Word of God. Luke gives special mention to the women among Jesus' ministry team here at the beginning of chapter 8. Passages like this one, among others, are crucial for understanding the affirmation of women in leadership and the role Jesus intended for women in his Kingdom. We use Luke's acknowledgment of their partnership here to address other passages that have been widely misused to limit and exclude the necessary contributions of women in ministry.

This week’s passage features an awkward dinner party when an uninvited guest makes makes her way there. We explore the significance of the table for each of the characters in our story. The way of Jesus proposes the table is a place of transformation, where we experience the forgiveness and love of Jesus in the presence of others and where we can be challenged to face our own self righteousness, softening into mercy and grace.
