Kintinu’d Conversations Podcast: Taking Turtle Steps Towards Progress

The environment in which we learn and the tasks we choose to practice are directly related to our ability to form new routines and habits. Breaking the end goal into smaller, more manageable steps helps maintain motivation and encourages a contextual learning experience. Practicing the exact skill or task promotes generalization of the skill later on. At Kintinu, refer to this concept as “Tying it to the Task.”  

In this episode of Kintinu’d Conversations, Brad Dexter,  Ana Hancock, and Tim Benak discuss the keys to applying the “Tie it to the Task” mantra to everyday life. They welcome guest, Julie Edge, a business and life coach out of the Kansas City area and former client to the podcast to share her story. Julie has overcome breast cancer and fought back from a spinal cord injury by implementing learning strategies to help achieve her big picture goals. Her concept of “turtle steps” is a great example of how to break down tasks into manageable chunks all while celebrating those achievements along the way.

The turning of the new year is a natural inflection point that triggers reflection of past mistakes and consideration of future intentions. Arguably, there are similar points throughout the year. Why not take advantage of these as they come?  

Today, New Year’s resolutions typically involve self-improvement (which may explain why such resolutions seem so hard to follow through on). According to recent research, while as many as 45 percent of Americans say they usually make New Year’s resolutions, only 8 percent are successful in achieving their goals.
