Politics and fixing the Special Education system, two of my great passions, so my guest this week is perfect to dive into both of those areas.

Ed Maxfield is a Norfolk County Councillor, representing villages along the beautiful North Norfolk coast.

He left the Liberal Democrats in 2020 because he wasn’t happy with the direction they were taking and was re-elected as an Independent at the elections in 2021.

Throughout that time, he has focused on issues relating to services for children and for those with disabilities and additional needs having recently held the post of Head of Children and Family Services at NANSA, regular listeners will know this is also a big focus of mine.

We had a wide ranging conversation, discussing Ed’s time running Sir Norman Lamb’s election campaigns, and then also as part of the National Campaign team for the Liberal Democrats.

We also delved into the issues in the SEND system, particularly within Norfolk, and Ed shares his ideas on how the system could be radically improved.

As always, we asked Ed to recommend future guests of KNOW YOUR SHIFT, Ed recommended his daughter Hannah who is about to embark on a major change.

My guest this week on Know Your Shift is Kevin Redman from Oyster Partnership.

Kevin is a pioneer in PBSA recruitment, he founded the Property Recruitment Company back in 2012, daring to be different, they were the market leader in PBSA and Residential Operations recruitment.

Then, at the age of 39, Kevin suffered an Ischemic stroke, then suffered a brain bleed which led to an emergency craniotomy and spending not only just over a week in a coma & 11 days in intensive care but then the next 8 months wearing a protective helmet everywhere. After 3.5 months in hospital, he returned home in October 2022, unable to walk and unable to move his left arm.

Hear the story of how Kevin tried to keep The Property Recruitment Company going whilst still in recovery and the eventual closing of the business and how things changed overnight.

Kevin’s journey through recovery and back to doing what he loves is inspiring.

I also got stuck into PBSA, BTR, Co-Living and SFH with Kevin and got his predictions for the future of those sectors.

My guest this week on Know Your Shift is Polly Elworthy, CEO at SEND Unlocked.

Polly’s journey is COMPLEX and INSPIRATIONAL, resulting in what Polly describes as a ‘Modern Family’.

Polly’s youngest son Rex has a diagnosis of AUTISM, ADHD, PDA & Dyslexia, but this doesn’t define him, and POLLY’S FIGHT to get Rex the support he needs led to the birth of SEND Unlocked, a platform designed to SUPPORT OTHER FAMILIES with additional needs to find the support they need and to have their say on the issues that IMPACT their families today.

We learn about how Polly was inspired by the incredibly STRONG FEMALE role models in her family and how she has made it her MISSION through SEND Unlocked to give other families the power to be the best despite having systems that make it difficult for them.
