Knowing Jesus: Where Faith, Psychology, and Real Life Meet

We see a contrast between two disciples Mary and Judas and how their relationship with Jesus leads to drastically different values.  We then see the Triumphal entry of Jesus, also known as our Palm Sunday celebration. This leads to an excellent and unexpected discussion on Poverty, Betrayal, Politics, and Jesus Changing my Racist Heart - which would have been a subtitle but it's too long.

We cover a challenging scripture today and hope to hold the both between individualism and communalism. Our over-emphasis on individualism often causes us to dismiss parts of scripture - like this one where Jesus heals a blind man and he was born blind so God can be glorified.

In less than 20 verses we cover Jesus' determination to heal right after death threats, miraculous signs, boldness, Jesus showing us how we shouldn't care about those who wrongly hate us, and Jesus' desire to free us from American self-obsession which has permeated the church and makes us miserable.

**Update to Schedule** New Epsidoes every Wednesday. With a baby on the way (woo!), I can only upload one episode a week for now. // Today we talk about how we all are tempted to be a pharisee. We can all hold to our man-made beliefs above who Jesus really is.  Jesus was put to death by people like this. Instead of buckling down in self-justification, owning our failure and sin, in the presence of a loving God, and in true Christian community, is the only true path to freedom.  Trying to sustain a mask of perfection is draining and impossible.

Right after the people are excited and amazed about Jesus for feeding them, they are quick to reject Him. The crowd, like us, is fickle. We can easily pursue and follow God when we get what we want and when things are good. What would it be like to be more like Peter in this example, who, when Jesus asked if the 12 would leave him too, replied: "Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life" (John 6:68)

The equation for the fruitful Christian is daily reliance on Christ. Christian literally means "little Christ." Anything truly Christian requires Christ's power and love - we cannot muster Christlikeness from our own strength. This humble requirement challenges me. It's easier to rely on my own strength and submit to how much I need Jesus. We are invited into a radical relationship. Instead of covering up our weaknesses, we are invited to showcase them and talk about them with God and see His power perfected in them.

People politize Jesus today but also did it back in His time. We want God to serve us instead of being servants open to His will. These desires tend to come from a place of fear. Fear unchecked often leads to anger.  It's easy to be tempted to judge non-Christians for a lack of morality but what about us Christians? When we are just as hateful and yet "have" the truth. God is inviting us to own our brokenness and our desperate need for the Holy Spirit to make us more like the real Jesus - to show His light.

Curmudgeons are fun when they're on TV like Nick Offerman's Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation. But what happens when Christians are more like curmudgeons than like Christ? What about those of us who "broadcast" faith on social media, podcasts, books, conversations etc? Do our conversations give grace to hearers? Do they create a thirst for surrendering more to Christ or just to fear? Are they invitational or closed-circuit social clubs? We explore these topics and more on today's episode.
