Someone is using Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske's name in a scam involving the fraudulent use of a document that has been altered to appear to be an official certificate issued by the Secretary of State. The scam requests the recipient to pay “IRS tax fees” to receive “winning money” from the Internal Revenue Service. The Secretary of State became aware of the scam when the office received a request to verify the authenticity of a document which indicates that it was issued by the “Secretary of State of Nevada Taxation.” The document bears the forged signature of a former Secretary of State. Secretary Cegavske asks that anyone that may have received or that has responded to the fraudulent request contact her office.

Late Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn's signature program, the Millenium Scholarship, may be at risk. Lawmakers have been told the program is running out of money, and even a proposed 20 million dollar cash infusion from the legislature would only allow the scholarships to continue though 2019. The scholarships were initially funded by tobacco settlement money, but has also been supported by the state and by unclaimed property funds. Tobacco funds supply 15 million a year, the unclaimed property fund a little under 8 million, but scholarships cost more than 30 million in fiscal 2016.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting death of a man and wounding of a woman Monday evening. Deputies were called to Slate Road in Topaz Ranch Estates a little before seven last evening, where they found a man with a life threatening gunshot wound. He was taken by air ambulance to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Deputies also found a female with a serious gunshot wound. She was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno for treatment. Her condition is not yet known. The investigation into the shooting is continuing. The names of the the dead man and the woman have not been released. There is no mention of any possible suspect.

Reno Police arrested an alleged burglar after a standoff in northwest Reno. Police say the burglary was reported early Monday afternoon on Starfire Lane, near Mae Anne and Sharlands. Surrounding homes were cleared while police tried to determine whether the burglar was still in the home. After about two hours, they determined the man WAS still inside the house and used negotiators to try to talk him out. Officer Tim Broadway says the man was safely talked out about 4:30PM. No one was hurt. The suspect reportedly has an extensive criminal history.

The Reno Fire Department is investigating the cause of a house fire that started early this morning on Offenhauser Drive. They say the fire was confined to 1 room in the two-story home and only the homeowner was in the residence at the time. Crews say they were able to knock the fire down quickly. The fire left minor damages to the second floor and minor smoke damage throughout the home. The homeowner was treated for smoke inhalation on scene by REMSA. Two dogs who were also in the home at the time of the fire were not injured.
