Lyon County is preparing for the potential for flooding during this week's storms, by setting up sand and sandbag locations throughout the Central Lyon County Corridor. Residents are advised to check for updates on the Lyon County website and Facebook pages.

A warm storm they're calling an atmospheric river is expected to hit our area between now and Monday, raising the Truckee River to flood stage. Although the flooding isn't expected to be as bad as the famous '97 flood, it will mirror conditions similar to the flooding we had in '05.

Washoe County officials want to stress how important it is for you to be ready when the storm hits this weekend. They've issued a warning to everyone who lives along the riverside to prepare for an evacuation, but they're also reaching out to those that live near streams and drainage ditches to do the same. Sparks High School is opening Sunday at noon for flood evacuees. Once they're full, Wooster High School will open as a secondary shelter, if needed.

Washoe County has declared a state of emergency in advance of expected flooding this weekend. What exactly does that mean? County Manager John Slaughter explains, it will expedite the movement of state resources to help, allowing the movement of National Guard troops and NDF crews if needed. The declaration also gives the county manager emergency spending power, so he can authorize overtime, and grants powers like the movement of county resources on or through private property if needed.
