The Washoe County Sheriff Department is taking a look at some new detection technology that can find illegal drugs when drug dogs and people can't.

A Reno woman has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following an accident involving a pedestrian. It happened just before 11 o'clock last night near the Morris Hotel on East 4th Street. Witnesses reported that the victim was unloading some items from her car, when another vehicle heading eastbound crashed into her. Police say she was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. Alexandria Walls was booked into the Washoe County Detention facility for DUI, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession with Intent to Sell.

With more than 230 influenza cases reported in Washoe County last week, and about 10% of the cases leading to people being hospitalized, health officials are promoting vaccinations and vigilance to keep people from catching the flu this season. And, the usual peak-of-the-season is still six to eight weeks away. Flu shots are readily available at several locations, including local pharmacies, health care providers, and the Washoe County Health District. It usually takes two weeks for vaccine to reach full potency; however, many people will realize benefits from the flu shot within just a few days.

State officials say Nevada's public high school graduation rate is up almost 3 percentage points from the previous year. It's still one of the worst in the country but it's getting better. The Nevada Department of Education says the graduation rate for the Class of 2016 is 73.6 percent. That's up from 70.8 percent in 2015. English language learners were the group that showed the greatest improvement. Their graduation rate rose 10 percentage points, even though it remains one of the lowest at 42.6 percent. Nevada's graduation rate was better than only New Mexico and the District of Columbia last year.

A Washoe County jury has convicted a Reno man of 39 counts of child sexual assault and lewdness. Sentencing is set for March. 45-year-old Valentin Corrales, is being held on a $3.6 million bond attached to his name, guilty of 12 counts of lewdness with a child under 14, 13 counts of sexual assault with a child under 14 , six counts of sexual assault with a child under 16, and eight counts of sexual assault. Corrales was arrested in March 2015 on the first of the charges. Each of the felonies carries a potential life term in prison.

A wreath will be placed on the grave of every service member at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Fernley Saturday. All have been crafted by volunteers working the the "Wreaths Across America" program. Tom Draughon (Drawn) of the Nevada Veterans Coalition, says their mission is not only to remember and honor, but also to teach. He says it's important for young people to recognize the sacrifices our soldiers make. The ceremony starts at 9am, and about two thousand people are expected to attend.
