Search and rescue rescue crews have located the body of a 60 year-old skier who got trapped in an avalanche Saturday morning. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office first received the report around 10:15 a.m.on Saturday and began searching the area. Crews were were able to locate the body this afternoon. Mike Pierce with Mt. Rose says that two skiers, both 60 year-old men, had hiked up to a closed area called the the 'Jack Pot Chute' when an avalanche occurred. One of the two skiers got caught in the avalanche. The man's identification is being withheld.

Crews are working to protect the public from hazards caused by the considerable rainfall. NDOT has been busy - on 207, Kingsbury Grade, there were two mudslides that crews responded to, including a large boulder that fell onto the highway. Snowplows were able to clear the road. On I-80 eastbound near Mogul, the outside lane was closed temporarily due to a mudslide, but it has been cleaned up and is open to traffic. Washoe County reported a breach in the Steamboat Ditch causing some minor flooding on roads in Mogul.

With 3-4 inches of rain falling on the east side of the Sierras, the Truckee River has risen dramatically. At about 6 am, the level was about 5 ft, but started rising quickly. The current level is 8.83 feet, well below the flood stage of 11 ft. The flows are expected to dissipate tomorrow as the storm moves out of the area.

A 60-year-old male skier who climbed the mountain into the Jackpot Chutes of Mt Rose Ski Tahoe was caught up in an avalanche this morning at around 10:30. His ski partner called 911 and the Ski Patrol, along with Washoe County Search & Rescue and search dogs started to comb the area. At about 2:00 pm, searchers were called back because of increasing avalanche danger, as Mt Rose personnel performed avalanche mitigation. At 4pm, the search was called off until tomorrow morning due to safety concerns. The run was closed off with fencing and the lift was not operating at the time of the incident.

Flooding, mudslides, and scattered power outages in Northern Nevada resulting from an overnight storm... Washoe County has reported that the Steamboat Ditch breached causing minor flooding on roads in Mogul and a few private properties in Caughlin Ranch and Belli Ranch. NDOT crews responded to a mudslide on the Kingsbury Grade and a large boulder that blocked the highway for a time... I-80 eastbound had a lane closed for a time this morning because of water over the road. Currently no delays but that can change.

A skier was caught in an avalanche this morning in the Jackpot Chutes area of the Mt Rose ski area. Two skiers in their 60's hiked to the top because the lifts were not operating. One skier saw the other get overwhelmed by the avalanche. Searchers with search dogs are helping the ski patrol search the area. Several inches of snow have fallen since the avalanche.
