The Nevada Division of Forestry has ended a controlled burn at Little Valley between Reno and Carson City, because of concerns about changes in the wind, and that cold temperatures could pull smoke down to the valley floor.

The U.S. Nationals of the "Scott Safety Firefighter Combat Challenge" are happening in Reno this weekend. The event is in the west parking lot at the Atlantis. The Firefighter Combat Challenge promotes physical fitness readiness, as firefighters race against themselves, their opponents, and the clock via an obstacle course consisting of five tasks. They include a 5-story tower climb, hoisting a weight up a rope to the top of the tower, dragging a hose and firing it at a target, and rescuing a 175-lb. mannequin. The event is free, and the community is invited to attend.

A 78 year old Reno man who stabbed his wife to death in front of their 11 year old son, and then tried to take his own life, has pleaded guilty to first degree murder. Daniel Pancake faces a possible sentence of life without parole for the November 2014 crime. He'll be sentenced in December. The boy has moved to Michigan and is living with family members.

Opponents of the ballot measure that would start a process to break up NV Energy's monopoly, and deregulate electricity markets, are suing to keep it off the ballot

The lawsuit filed in Carson City District Court says the Energy Choice Initiative, which is also called Question 3, unlawfully ties the hands of the Legislature going forward.

The AFL-CIO launched a formal campaign against the measure, which is backed by the Las Vegas Sands, MGM Resorts and Switch. Question 3 directs lawmakers to open electricity markets, but it has to pass two consecutive statewide votes to become part of the state's constitution, then legislators would be directed to take a specific action, which critics say gives to much power to voters. Polls show the measure has wide support. Q-3 backers say the suit is a political stunt.
