Following the terrorist attacks in Brussels and Istanbul, the Reno-Tahoe International Airport is taking action. REMSA held a training exercise yesterday, teaching airport staff what to do in an active shooter situation.

Firefighting planes had to halt operations for half an hour on the massive, deadly Sand Fire in Southern California, while they tracked down a person flying a drone in the fire zone, interfering with aircraft.

REMSA held a training exercise yesterday at Reno-Tahoe International Airport, with a focus on responding to an active shooter. Reno-Tahoe International Police Officers and Firefighters have gone through this type of training before, but this time they included airport staff.

A recent "near miss" between a hobby drone and the Sheriffs Raven Helicopter, during a fire in Caughlin Ranch, is just one of many incidents endangering firefighters, and hindering their efforts.

Smoke affecting the air quality in the Truckee Meadows is coming from a large fire in Monterey County. More than 15,000 acres have burned and 20 homes have been destroyed in the fire that started July 22nd north of Big Sur. The fire is 10% contained, with no estimate of full containment. No cause has been determined. Because of the smoke, Washoe County Air Quality says air is unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The Reno Police Department issued more than 150 citations last Thursday during a joint pedestrian safety and D-U-I campaign in downtown Reno. Officers issued citations to 92 pedestrians and 64 drivers between two in the afternoon and eleven that night. There were no D-U-I citations issued. This was the second pedestrian safety operation in this area in as many months. The Reno Police Department Traffic Division analyzed pedestrian crashes throughout the city over the last five years and identified the sections of roadway experiencing the highest volume of pedestrian crashes. The 4th Street corridor in downtown Reno was found to have the highest volume of those incidents.

Sparks Police were called to the area of Sixth Street and Wright way yesterday morning at about 2:25 to reports of shots fired and people screaming. Arriving officers found a group of people fighting in the middle of Sixth Street. Other officers saw Brando Rodriguez-Guerrero running from the area of the fight. Investigating officers say Rodriguez-Guerrero and several associates went to a party in the area, which led to a fight. They also say Rodriguez-Guerrero fired several shots from a pistol into the air, then ran. He was located and arrested for discharging a firearm in public and on an unrelated warrant.

A 51-year-old man hit by a car when he crossed the street against a red light early Sunday has died. Police say James Martin Barrent was crossing Maple Street at about 1:05 a.m. He had the red light and an eastbound driver had the green light. The driver hit him. Neither alcohol nor speed appears to be a factor.
