Nevada is going to get nearly 700-thousand dollars in federal funds in the battle against the spread of the Zika virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today (Thursday) announced that the Silver State will get 690-thousand dollars of the 60-million dollars allocated for the fight against the disease. The money will be used to investigate and monitor local outbreaks. It will also be used to establish a pregnancy registry to help women and babies born with the virus. The Zika virus is spread by mosquito bites, sex, and from a mother to her baby during pregnancy. Zika causes only mild illness in most people, however infection during pregnancy can lead to severe brain-related birth defects. Zika cases have been reported in Clark and Washoe counties.
