上司：君に頼んでいたプロジェクトだけど、先方からお褒めの言葉をもらったよ。とても助かった。ありがとうね。

あなた：ほんとですか？［        ］私もまだまだ至らない点がありましたから、これからもご指導よろしくお願いします！

①とてつもないです

②全然です

③とんでもないです

正解は、③とんでもないです、です。

この言葉にはもともと三つの意味があります。

一つ目は、予想外だ、という意味。

とんでもない発見だ！

などと使います。

二つ目は、もってのほかである、という意味。

とんでもない！夜の水泳は危険だよ！

が例文です。

三つ目は、相手の言葉を強く否定する意味。

えっ？とんでもない、彼女がそんなことするわけないでしょ。

と使います。

これらが少しずつ、「謙遜して相手の褒め言葉を軽く否定する」意味をもつようになりました。

さらに細かいことをいえば、「とんでもないです」も実は誤用です。日本語文法では「とんでもないことです」が正しいとされますが、現代ではごく一般的に「とんでもないです」が利用されているため、よほどフォーマルな場でなければ、悪い印象をあたえることはないと思います。

The answer is three!

The word originally had three meanings.

The first means unexpected.

Secondly, it means that it is not a good idea.

Third, it means strongly denying what the other person has said.

It is used for things such as.

１とんでもない発見だ！

２とんでもない！夜の水泳は危険だよ！

３えっ？とんでもない、彼女がそんなことするわけないでしょ。

Gradually, these have come to mean ‘to be humble and lightly deny the other person's compliments’.

To put a finer point on it, ‘it's outrageous’ is actually also a misuse. In Japanese grammar, ‘it's outrageous’ is considered correct, but ‘it's outrageous’ is very commonly used in modern times and should not give a bad impression unless the occasion is very formal.

The reason is that no matter how hard I try, I can't pronounce it like a native English speaker now, so I thought it would be hard to hear if I kept talking like this. So here is this quiz.

What is the opposite of “private opinions”?

The correct answer is “HONNE”.

In Japanese, there is a common saying: Honne To Tatemae. “Honne” refers to words that are said from the heart.

I speak my true feelings, “Honne wo haku” or “Honne ga deru”. In Japanese, it is often said that “honne to tatemae’ means ‘to speak one's true mind’.

Use your true feelings and tatemae to communicate well.

急を要する病気だったり大きな怪我だった場合は、救急車を呼ぶ必要があるかもしれないですよね。

In Japan, call ‘119’ to call an ambulance.

Today, instead of a quiz, let's practice a conversation.

日本では、救急車を呼ぶ場合、「119」に電話します。

今日は、クイズではなく、会話の練習をしてみましょう。
