You probably know that the Japanese language is full of onomatopoeia, but did you know that it can also be used for illness?

今日はクイズはお休みして、オノマトペを練習しましょう。

日本語にはオノマトペがたくさんあるのはご存知の通りだと思いますが、病気にも使えるのは知っていますか？

For exsample,

頭がガンガンする。(Pain like being beaten).

喉がイガイガする。(Dry, uncomfortable feeling as if something is stuck).

胃がチクチク痛む。(Stabbing pain).

などです。

It is quite difficult to convey detailed nuances, but being able to use these expressions is useful for communicating symptoms when you visit a hospital.

細かいニュアンスを伝えるのはなかなか難しいのですが、このような表現を使えるようになると病院に行った時に症状を伝えるのに便利です。

Japanese has a wide range of ways of expressing speed, as there are numerous onomatopoeic words, but basically it is advisable to focus on ‘fast’ and ‘slow’.

日本語は、擬音語も多く存在するので、スピードの表し方は幅が広いのですが、基本的には「早い」「遅い」を中心に学習していくといいでしょう。

例は次のとおりです。

・遅い＝ゆっくり、のろのろ、

・早い＝素早く、サッと、

‘AからBまで’ is a phrase that is often used, so it is useful to remember it.

「まで」は範囲の限界点をあらわします。

AからBまで、はよく使うフレーズなので、覚えておくと便利です。

Simply explained, “どこで”is “where” , ”いつ”is “when” , ”なぜ” and ”なんで” are “why” , ”どのように” is “how”.

この場合の “どうしたの”は”何が起こったの(what happened)”を表します。

簡単に説明すると、“どこで”はwhere、”いつ”はwhen、”なぜ”や”なんで”はwhy、”どのように”がhowです。

If you do not know what kind of relationship the person you are meeting for the first time is to you, you need to phrase it in a way that is not rude, just in case.

The three phrases are about as different in English as ‘Who are you?’ and ‘May I ask your name?’

Let's be sure to speak politely.

初対面の人が、自分にとってどんな関係の人間かわからない場合は、念のため、失礼でないフレーズが必要です。

３つのフレーズは、英語で言うと、“Who are you?”と”May I ask your name?”くらい差があります。

丁寧に話すように心がけましょう。

However, entering a fitting room without permission is not allowed - please learn the phrase ‘試着したいんですが’ so that you can say to the shop assistant.

服って、見るのと着てみるのとではイメージが全然違うことも多いので、試しに着てみたいものですよね。

でも、勝手に試着室に入るのはNGです。店員さんに一言断れるように、ぜひ「試着したいんですけど」のフレーズを覚えてくださいね。

店員：ラーメンと、カレーですね。お飲み物はいかがなさいますか？

You：ええと、オレンジジュースで。あと、お水も１つ[ _____ ]。

店員：かしこまりました。それではご注文を繰り返させていただきます。ラーメンを１つ、カレーを１つ、オレンジジュースを１つ。それからお冷を１つ。以上でよろしいでしょうか。

You：はい、大丈夫です。

①ちょうだい

②ほしい

③ください

The answer is TREE! ‘おみずも ひとつ ください’ is natural Japanese.

In fact, the answers to this question are all correct in Japanese: 1, 2 and 3.

However, we Japanese do not usually use words such as ‘ちょうだい’ or ‘ほしい’ in shops to people we are not familiar with, such as shop assistants.In this case, the theory is to use the polite word ‘ください’.

実は、今回の回答は、日本語としては１、２、３のどれを使っても通じます。

ただし、お店で、店員という親しくない人に対して、「ちょうだい」や「ほしい」といった言葉遣いは、通常しません。

この場合は、「ください」と丁寧な言葉を使うのがセオリーです。

Incidentally, “おひや” and “おみず” mean the same thing.

ちなみに、お冷、とお水は同じ意味です。

In Japan, if you have a reservation for accommodation, you can often leave your luggage free of charge, even before or after check-in.

However, it is always a good idea to ask just in case, so familiarise yourself with the phrase.

日本では、宿泊予約があれば、チェックイン前やチェックイン後でも無料で荷物を預かってもらえることが多いです。

ですが、念の為に尋ねておくと安心ですから、フレーズに慣れ親しんでおきましょう。
