In this episode, we work to understand Los Angeles’ police gangs as a former LA undersheriff admits he had a deputy gang tattoo. After two years of fighting a subpoena issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission, former undersheriff Timothy Murakami has testified that he received the tattoo of the Cavemen deputy gang while he was a deputy at the East LA station in the 1980s.

We are joined by Cerise Castle, a Los Angeles-based journalist and equity reporter for Capitol and Main. She wrote the first history of deputy gangs in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 2021, and has covered the aftermath of the revelations closely.

If we don’t know its happening – then we can’t fight back. We cant adequately organize a response. So, every week on Law & Disorder we do a round up of news related to state violence. On today’s show, we discuss the extent to which FBI informants and agents were central in instigating the plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Trevor Aaronson is a journalist and the author of The Terror Factory: Inside the FBI’s Manufactured War on Terrorism. He is also a contributing writer for The Intercept and the host of a podcast called Alphabet Boys – which reveals secret investigations of the FBI, DEA, ATF, and other agencies, and includes secret undercover recordings that the government never wanted the public to hear. Eric VanDussen is a Michigan-based journalist and videographer, and contributor to The Intercept. He’s covered the Governor Whitmer kidnapping plot and subsequent prosecutions closely for the last 3 years, including lawsuits under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to bring the details about the case and FBI operations into the public spotlight. 

They join us to discuss their latest investigations for The Intercept, “The FBI’s Double Informant” detailing how the FBI informant and operations at the heart of the plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in 2020.

Khury Petersen-Smith, Michael Ratner Middle East Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies says, “If the US actually said, ‘We’re going to stop the flow of weapons to Israel,’ that is the one thing that I think could lead to an Israeli deescalation across the board—in Gaza, in Lebanon and in Jerusalem. Short of that, I think that they essentially have the green light in Washington to do whatever they want.”

Today, the hashtag-turned rallying cry is but one expression of a radical reorientation toward Black politics, protest, and political thought. We’re joined today by the author of a book about the past 10 years of political movement, Christopher Paul Harris. His book To Build a Black Future examines the spirit and significance of this insurgency, offering a revelatory account of a new political culture—responsive to pain, suffused with joy, and premised on care—emerging from the centuries-long arc of Black rebellion, a tradition that traces back to the Black slave.

On February 15th, a group of eight artists whose pieces were featured in a Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) exhibition protested the organizations attempt to silence political conversation on Palestine by altering their own exhibited works, adding pro-Palestine messages to their pieces. Since the protest, the YBCA gallery has remained closed. Eight artists participated in the protest, and we have two of them joining us in conversation. Leila Weefur is an artist, writer, and independent curator based in Oakland, and Sholeh Asgary is an Iranian-born interdisciplinary sound artist.
