  • Living on the Edge of Death (Part Two) and A Tribute to Adrienne Rich

Shanti Soule and Stephanie Sugars continue last week’s conversation about their choices during the terminal stage of their illnesses.

Robert McRuer talks about how Adrienne Rich and other lesbian feminists gave is a more free, more accessible world. Although she did not find a political identity in her disability, Rich’s essay

“Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence.” has influenced a generation of disability scholars.

Robert McRuer is an English professor at George Washington University, the author of Crips Theory: Cultural Signs of Queerness and Disability and, his most recent book, an anthology called, Sex and Disability.

With an essay by Jacob Lesner-Buxton, “Dancing The Night Away”

Hosted by Shelley Berman and Adrienne Lauby

  • Living on the Edge of Death (Part One)

Living on the Edge of Death: A Conversation Between Shanti Soule and Stephanie Sugars. Part One.

Two women with only a short time to live talk about the threshold of death, their interaction with the medical industry, the choices they’ve made in the past, their choices today, and much more.

We listen in on the ultimate discussion. Two women, Shanti Soule and Stephanie Sugars, maneuvering along the threshold of death. Shanti Soule was a Buddhist teacher, cook and fierce defender of

rights for all oppressed peoples. She was instrumental in the start of the East Bay Meditation Center, and, until the end, fighting for diversity in the dharma. Stephanie Sugars also is a Buddhist, a disability advocate and a long time cancer survivor. Both women shared a love of nature.

Stephanie and Shanti skate together, living on the edge of death, understanding each other and taking time to explain to us — mere disabled folks not dealing with imminent death — so we could

understand too. In this dense program, philosophy and death intertwine.

Produced, hosted and photographed by Shelley Berman.

Both women have been interviewed on Pushing Limits previously. For details and listening links:

We’ve officially entered California’s budget season, the season when shredding safety nets for

people with disabilities and seniors is en vogue. Every year the California legislature creatively
cuts the budget on the backs of the poor. And, this year is no different. Or is it?

A 60 minute special on this year’s budgetary landscape. We’ll talk to Marty Omoto, director of the

California Disability Community Action Network (CDCAN), Kathie Kates, an IHSS worker caring for her
86 year old mother, and Nancy Becker Kennedy of the new IHSS Consumers Union. With a commentary by
    Jacob Lesner-Buxton.

Adrienne Lauby, Shelley Berman. and Eddie Ytuarte host this fund drive program.

Howie Mandel, Roseanne Barr, Justine Timberlake and our guest, Naomi, have something in common; they

live with obsessive-compulsive disorder. This mental disability is becoming better known, offering
less stigma and more hope to those learning to negotiate the anxiety and compulsions of O.C.D. Naomi
trains a humorous eye on overcoming the fear of raccoons in her closet, cockroaches and the touch of
dirty laundry. Produced and hosted by Shelley Berman.

The stereotyping of people living with mental disabilities and homeless people during the

Occupy encampments could have set our mutual liberation back for decades. If it doesn’t, it will be
due to a radically different story from those who came to the Occupy camps to protest and meet each
    other face to face.

The Occupy encampments have been swept from our cities and towns. We no longer have that

opportunity to break bread with those who come from different backgrounds and political opinions.
So…pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and meet three of your comrades.

Herbert Darren spent a month at the Occupy L.A. encampment. David Parks and Eve are heavily

involved in Occupy Santa Rosa. All three live with mental disabilities. All are (or have been)
    homeless.

They talk about how homeless and mental disability issues are important to the movement, about the

conflicts within the camps, and how becoming part of this movement has affected their lives.

    Adrienne Lauby hosts.
