The Promise and Repercussions of the Olmstead Decision

The 1999 Supreme Court Olmstead decision

required states to configure aid so that people
with disabilities could live as close to their own
homes and community as possible. Twelve years
later, huge numbers of us still remain unwilling
inmates of nursing homes. Now, even more of
us are likely to lose our independence due to
Jan 1 trigger cuts in the California and the Federal
    budget.

Friday, November 18 at 2:30 pm on

KPFA, 94.1fm Pushing Limits will discuss the
Olmstead decision with Jean Stewart, a member
of Communities United in Defense of Olmstead
    (CUIDO).

We’ll also talk about the threat to independent rural

hospitals from the same federal trigger cuts with
Leslie D. March, CEO of the Lexington (Nebraska)
Regional Health Center. Hosted by Eddie Ytuarte
    and Adrienne Lauby.

The Oakland Occupy movement is popular, international media covers it and so will Pushing Limits…..but with a disability slant, a heavy disability slant. Organizer Marg Hall will talk with co hosts Eddie Ytuarte and Leah Gardner as they present their questions and perspectives on these current events happening almost literally on our back yards. And, Stephanie Miyashiro will tell us of her experience of being yards in front of police lines, in her wheelchair, right before the tear gas canisters go off. Pushing Limts on November 4 at 2:30 p.m.

NOTE: DIFFERENT TIME Hour-Long Special, 2-3 pm Friday, October 7

“Just Like Someone Without Mental Illness Only More So”
Mark Vonnegut’s new book takes up where his first
memoir, “Eden Express” left off. He gives us more adventures
in living with a mental disability while working as a
pediatrician and serving on Harvard Medical School’s
    admissions committee.

Mark Vonnegut had a mental breakdown as a young

adult. He survived and went on to become a doctor
but his mental illness didn’t stop. We’ll talk about
his subsequent breakdowns, his critique of managed
care medicine and hear a few funny stories. The
treatment of people with mental disabilities in the U.S.
is both tragic and unnecessary. We’ll talk about that —
as well as doctors flying to Costa Rica to save poor
people, a hospital which tried to take a child away from
a black family because it didn’t like their attitude, and
    more.

Shelley Berman, Marissa Shaw, Adrienne Lauby and

Leah Gardner quiz the good doctor as we encourage
you to become members of KPFA.

    “The Mastocytosis Blues”

She was suddenly very sick with mysterious symptoms. Even her friends lifted an eyebrow when she insisted it had something todo with chlorine exposure. She was living on crackers and still couldn’t get the doctors to pay attention. Shanti Soule reflects on trying to get a diagnosis for what turned out to be a very rare and serious disease.

Also, Carolyn Epple, still without a diagnosis after more than a decade, talks about how she dodges past the mental illness label as she negotiates for medical care.

Hosted & produced by Shelley Berman.

Why should progressives and people with disabilities be opposed to something called the Domestic Workers Civil Rights? Well folks are split on this state bill which would provide additional benefits to domestic workers who work for people with disabilities but do not receive IHSS assistance. Big contradictions there and Pushing Limits will try to sort it out on August 19 with guests from Disability Rights California vs. California Domestic Worker Coalition. Eddie Ytuarte and Adrienne Lauby host.

On July 23, 600 people covered a San Jose street with chants of

“Our Homes Not Nursing Homes,” a giant Justin Dart puppet and
the sights and sounds of numerous contingents of people with
disabilities. It was a day for pride under the rubric of social justice for all.

Interviews with Albert Azizian, Sarah Triano, Jody Yarborough and

one of the three parade grand marshals, Christina Mills. With a taste
of comedy from Chloe Blohm. Hosted by Raphaella Bennin. Interviews
by Adrienne Lauby and Marissa Shaw.
