Why this controversy over Smart Meters in California? Is Pacific

Gas and Electricity being honest in its contention that smart meters
are safe and will save consumers money in the long run? Or do
smart meters constitute another threat to the health of people with disabilities, seniors and children? Pushing Limits invited Joshua Hart from
Stop Smart Meters.org to tell us why the devices are no good while
we will wait to see if PG&E will send somebody from their side. Airs
live, Friday, July 15 from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. Eddie Ytuarte and Shelley Berman co host.

Friday, July on 94.1 KPFA FM in Berkeley, or www.KPFA.org at 2:30 pm PST: Celebrating Independence or Interdependence Day

With another Independence Day on the horizon, Pushing Limits is thinking about what “independence” means to the disability community. Is it being able to travel by yourself? Is it making use of technology instead of relying on a friend? Is it having the freedom to hire and fire your attendant? Or is it staying at home instead of moving into an institution?

Leah Gardner, Raphaella Bennin, and Adrienne Lauby will sit down to discuss the significance of independence (along with dependence and interdependence) as a member of the disability community. Call in at 510-848-4425 to tell Pushing Limits and the KPFA community how Independence has shaped your experience as someone with a disability.

We’ve all seen the T-shirts, the articles and the splash on the

Internet. “Does it Gets Better?” is the new buzz. Spurred after a dramatic upsurge in youth LGBTQI suicides, Dan Savage, a
well-known gay advice columnist, launched this group to offer positive
messages and hope to LGBTQI young adults. Does this campaign reach the double minority of disabled queer youth? How much
harassment and bullying do they face? We present two perspectives this
Friday. A young adult and an older adult bridge the gap and discuss their experiences. Leah
    Gardner and Adrienne Lauby host.

by Jacks Ashley McNamara. From the film,
“Crooked Beauty,” which sets McNamara’s voice
into evocative original music and stunning black
    and white cinematography.

disability film festival the weekend of June 17-19.

zen practice, alternative and western medicine, gardening,
and building community through grassroots activism.

Hosted by Adrienne Lauby and Shelley Berman, with

May 6 is a popcorn-eating day at Pushing Limits with two films by people with disabilities.

“When I am Not Alone” is an award-winning movie about the trials and triumphs of Sam Durbin, a transgendered man. Sam lives with a developmental disability, a seizure disorder, traumatic brain injury and mental illness. He is a public speaker on behalf of a disability center and the author of “You’re Not the Boss of Me.”

Gutierrez, herself, lives with severe to profound hearing loss. In addition, we’ll hear about Joe Stutts, a guy who worked a shovel in a coalmine and wanted to drive the heavy equipment. He only had one problem. He couldn’t read. The struggle Joe Stutts waged to improve his own life has opened the doors for tens of thousands of people with dyslexia. • State Budget and disability – April 15, 2011

Join Pushing Limits on 94.1 KPFA Fm in Berkeley

or on kpfa.org Friday April 15th at 2:30 pm PST.

Shelley Berman and Leah Gardner discuss making cents

out of non-cents. Federal and local budget woes abound, and
populations that can least afford it are finding key services
slashed with the flick of a pen.

We talk about the impact of more cuts on vulnerable

communities statewide and nationally with the Executive
Director of the Center for Independent Living of Los Angeles
Lillibeth Navarro and how to remain strong as our slice of the
budget pie dwindles. We also present a unique proposal for
decreasing the state budget deficit. Does any of this make
cents? Join Pushing Limits and find out this Friday.

With an interview of Alan Derman by Marissa Shaw &

    a commentary by Adrienne Lauby.
