As demonstrators across the nation continue demanding reforms for law enforcement, many communities large and small are beginning these conversations. Grand County Attorney Christina Sloan is the chief law enforcement official in the local community. Today on the news, we speak with her about how this national reckoning is pushing her office to look more closely at de-escalation policies and implicit bias training. The county is also planning to help host a community conversation on race with local law enforcement soon. We speak with Sloan on these efforts, and much more.

Hundreds of Moab protestors called for an end to police brutality and systemic racism during a large demonstration Friday night. Actions included a silent vigil, a march through downtown stretching three blocks long, and 20 minutes of peacefully blocking Main Street while chanting the last words of George Floyd, a Black man who was recently killed by a white police officer. As they spoke out about police brutality against communities of color, demonstrators also said they were looking inward – to changes they could make within themselves and within the Moab community. We spoke with several about why they showed up to demonstrate, and their questions and demands of local law enforcement.

On our weekly roundup with The Times-Independent, reporter Carter Pape discusses the latest from local Black Lives Matter protests, to COVID-19 news, and more. First, locals have been demonstrating against police brutality in front of the Moab Information Center every night this week. A candlelight vigil was also held at Swanny City Park in memory of George Floyd, a Black man who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for over eight minutes. And then, a state commission recommends that Governor Gary Herbert move Utah to the ‘Green’ or ‘New Normal’ COVID-19 health risk phase as soon as possible. Plus, Grand County’s Class of 2020 celebrates a graduation unlike any other.
    **UPDATE**
On June 5th, Governor Gary Herbert extended the current health risk guidance for the state. Salt Lake City, Bluff, and Mexican Hat remain in the Orange/Moderate Risk status, and the rest of the state remains Yellow/Low Risk. His decision departs from a state commission recommendation this week urging Utah to move to a modified ‘Green’ or ‘New Normal’ status as rapidly as possible. Herbert’s decree to formally extend the state’s existing health guidance will run through at least next Friday, June 12.

Exactly two weeks ago, Moab City announced a second round of furloughs and reductions to their staff. These layoffs take effect today, June 4th, and hit all city departments. Today on the news, we check in with city manager Joel Linares, who says the municipality’s tough financial situation started long before coronavirus. And later, Grand County Search and Rescue reports Left Hand Canyon as the most dangerous local destination right now. Plus, it’s Black Birders Week, an online event encouraging the inclusion of Black people in science and nature communities.

Nearly 100 community members were drawn to Swanny City Park last night for a candlelight vigil organized by Moab Pride. The event aimed to hold space for lives lost to police brutality, and create strategies on how this rural Utah town can “do better and be better” for marginalized people and communities. Among solutions, accountability was a priority of many attendees, who called out Moab’s majority white community on individual and systemic racism. Tune in.
