Environmental groups and activists have long pushed for decommissioning dams they say harm natural ecosystems and contribute to climate change. The worldwide construction of dams on rivers has stopped the natural flow of sand and silt to the sea – resulting in coastal wetland loss and disappearing beaches — as well as preventing fish from reaching vital spawning grounds. But even when the decision is made to remove a dam, it can be remarkably challenging. Tune in and learn more.

  • Get An Earful - Author Christian Wright
*Saturday Extra* Moab locals may know Christian Wright as a river guide or even longtime KZMU DJ. But he’s also an author of the forthcoming “Carbon County, USA: Miners for Democracy in Utah and the West.” It centers on the 1970s intermountain energy boom, telling the story of America’s premier industrial labor union at the height of its strength. In it, Wright details how miners’ racial, gender, and generational identities shaped their changing relationships to mining and organized labor. Earlier this week, he joined KZMU’s Radio Book Club to talk about the book. Host Andy Nettell begins the conversation.
    More on Radio Book Club:
    https://www.kzmu.org/radio-book-club/
Broadcasts live on the first Monday of the month at 5pm and co-hosted by the amazing literary thinkers at Back of Beyond Books and the Grand County Library. In addition to author interviews, the hosts give monthly book reviews, event updates and just generally have the best time talking about all things literary.

Grand County community members are signing their names in support of a referendum on Utah’s controversial new tax reform law. The signature gathering effort began statewide in December, and is remarkably bipartisan. Locals say they’re concerned about several elements in the tax bill, including an increase to grocery sales tax and gasoline sales, as well as income tax cuts that would decrease the potential funding pool for public education. Plus, the race for Utah’s open gubernatorial seat is getting crowded. Tune in.
