Throughout the country, the combination of park access and skeletal staff is raising concerns about adequate protection of natural resources. Today on KZMU News, we visit Arches, speak with people close to the National Park System, and learn about a new “fed food” hotline to connect out of work federal employees with food resources.

In 2015, the Gold King mine spill near Silverton, Colorado sent toxic waste water into the Animas River watershed. Heavy metals flowed from waterways in Colorado through New Mexico, Utah, and the Navajo Nation. The event drew attention to toxic drainage from similar abandoned mines throughout the country. Now folks are hoping 'Good Samaritan' legislation could help more communities clean up mine drainage. Our partners at Rocky Mountain Community Radio have the story.
