中国山脈の播磨と但馬の国境の谷あいに、僅か十数戸の部落があった。生業は云うまでもなく炭焼と猟師であった。

明治十五六年比ごろの秋のある日、一人の旅僧がやって来て、勘右衛門という猟師の家の門口に立ち、一夜の宿を乞うた。

勘右衛門の女房と娘は、むさくるしい処でもお厭いといなくば、と泊めた。

帰宅した亭主も旅僧を疑わず、其の夜は、旅僧から旅の話を聞いて珍らしがった。

悪天候が続いたので、旅僧はしかたなく逗留することになったが、娘の千代は、日一日と旅僧になじんでいった。

また一方、旅僧の方でも、千代の美しい姿にひきつけられているようであった。

In the Chugoku Mountains, in a valley on the border between Harima and Tajima, there was a tribe of only a dozen or so houses. Needless to say, they were charcoal burners and hunters.

One day in autumn around the 15th year of Meiji, a traveling monk came to the door of a hunter named Kanemon and asked for a place to stay for the night.

Kan'emon's wife and daughter were willing to let him stay, even though it was a disgusting place.

When he returned home, the master of the house did not suspect the monk, and that night he was delighted to hear the monk's stories about his travels.

As the weather continued to be bad, the monk had no choice but to stay, and his daughter Chiyo became more and more familiar with him day by day.

The monk also seemed to be attracted to Chiyo's beautiful figure.
