お菊さんは出前番だったので、岡持ちをもって店を出た。

At that moment, a tall old woman in black appeared. She asked him to deliver three dishes.

Okiku-san was on delivery duty, so she left the restaurant with the food.

大正十五年十二月二十六日の昼間、霧島の山中において、前代未聞の妖怪に出会った。

それはふしぎにも人間の形をしたものであった。が、人間ではない。背丈が二三センチに過ぎなかった。

ピンセットで採集しようとすると、微小人間は大きな声を出して抵抗した。

「ジャン」と、鳩（に似た鳥）はいった。「お前にも新盆がきた。かえるがよい」

ロレンス博士は、当時六十二歳、あたたかな大きな掌をもった老人で、遠来の私をこころよく迎えてくれた。

Dr. Lawrence, an elderly man with large, warm palms, was sixty-two years old at the time, and welcomed me warmly from afar.

　まったく、悪い奴にとっつかまったもんです」

昔、ある村に、重吉と六兵衛という二人の少年がいた。

二人は大の仲良しで、喧嘩はおろか口喧嘩さえしたことがなかった。

しかし、重吉は村一番に賢く、六兵衛はのろまで馬鹿。

しかも、重吉の家は村一番のお金持ちで、六兵衛の家は村一番の貧乏。

正反対の二人が、なぜ、そこまで仲が良いのか、村の人は不思議に思っていた。

六兵衛は村の皆から馬鹿にされ、いつもからかわれていた。

そんな六兵衛を可哀想に思った重吉は、あることを思いつく。

Once upon a time, there were two boys named Shigekichi and Rokubei in a village.

They were the best of friends and never quarreled, let alone fought.

However, Shigekichi was the smartest boy in the village, and Rokubei was an idiot, even a slacker.

The villagers wondered why these two opposites got along so well.

Rokubei was always ridiculed and made fun of by everyone in the village.

昔、関東を治めていた殿様が重い病にかかりました。

秩父にいる家来は、三峯山の法師に守札と薬をお願いしました。

法師は7日待って欲しいといい、家来は8日目までには整えてください、とお願いしました。

法師は、1日2回の祈祷をして守札を、昼間は山々を巡って薬草を揃えました。

8日目に守札と薬草が家来のもとに届きましたが、誰が届けるか、と思案しました。

その時、秩父の速（HAYA）という部下が申し出ました。

速（HAYA）には、鬼カゲという名馬があり、また本人も脚が速いことで有名でした。

A long time ago, a lord who ruled the Kanto region became seriously ill.

His retainer in Chichibu asked a priest in Sambu Mountain for a talisman and medicine.

The priest asked that they wait seven days, and the retainer asked that they be ready by the eighth day.

The priest prayed twice a day for the talismans, and during the daytime he went around the mountains to prepare medicinal herbs.

On the eighth day, the guardian cards and medicinal herbs arrived at the retainer's place, and he wondered who would deliver them.

At that time, a subordinate named HAYA from Chichibu offered to deliver them.

HAYA had a famous horse, Onikage, and was also famous for his fast legs.
