むかし、ペルシャの国に、ハムーチャという手品師がいました。

妻も子もない一人者で、広場で手品を見せ、その日暮らしをしていました。

彼はどんなに稼いでも、その日のうちに稼ぎを全て酒にして呑んでしまいます。

ある日のこと、旅人に呼び止められ、芸をして見せると、

「北の方に、もっとすごい手品師がいる」と教わります。その人は手品師というよりは、偉いお坊様のような人だそうです。

ハムーチャは一大決心をして、その凄い術を教わるために旅に出ました。

No matter how much money he made, he would drink it all that day.

One day, a traveler stopped him, and when he showed him a trick.

One day, a traveler stopped him and told him that there was an even greater magician in the north. Hamcha is told that he is more like a great monk than a magician.

Hamcha made up his mind and set out on a journey to learn this great trick.

♪おーさむこさむ♪の歌が広まってきた頃の話です。

その頃は、山の近くで焚き火をすると、山から一寸法師の小僧が降りてくる、と伝わっていました。

ある片田舎の山裾にある小さな村に伝わってきた時、子どもたちは目を丸くして喜びました。

そして、子どもたちだけで焚き火をすると、焚き火を囲んで輪になって歌ったり踊ったりして、山の小僧を呼ぼうとしました。

けれど、歌えど、踊れど、山から小僧はやってきません。

それでも子どもたちは何度も何度も、焚き火をして歌い踊り続けました。

ある日のことです。その日もいつものように焚き火を囲んで歌い踊っていると、

焚き火の煙の中に、大きなおじいさんの顔が現れて、そして高笑いをしました。

At that time, it was told that if you built a fire near a mountain, a one-dimensional little boy would come down from the mountain.

When the legend came to a small village at the foot of a mountain in a rural area, the children rolled their eyes and rejoiced.

When a fire was built with only the children, they gathered around the fire in a circle, singing and dancing in an attempt to call the mountain boy.

But no matter how much they sang and danced, the boy did not come from the mountain.

Still, the children sang and danced around the fire, over and over again.

One day. One day, as usual, they were singing and dancing around the fire.

Through the smoke of the fire, a big old man's face appeared and he smiled broadly.

ある田舎の山里に、甚兵衛という馬方がいました。

いたってのんき者で、お金がある間はぶらぶら遊んでいまして、お金がなくなると働きます。

甚兵衛の仕事は馬方で、親から継いだ田畑を売り払って手に入れた黒馬が自慢でした。

甚兵衛は、朝から黒馬の荷馬車に木材を積んで、五里先の街へ運んで、夕方頃に帰っていました。

ある冬の日、仕事を終えての帰り道、雪が降ってきましたので休憩し、もう止むだろうと薄暗くなった帰り道を馬を引いて進んでいると……

In a rural mountain village, there was a horseman named Jinbei.

He was a carefree man who played around as long as he had money, and worked when it ran out.

Jinbei's job was to work as a stable hand, and he was proud of his black horse, which he had acquired by selling the fields he had inherited from his parents.

Jinbei would load the black horse's wagon with lumber in the morning, take it to a town 5 ri away, and return home around evening.

One winter day, on his way home after work, it was snowing, so he took a break and pulled his horse along the dimly-lit road home, hoping that it would stop now.

正覚坊とは、大きなウミガメのことです。

漁師たちはウミガメが地引網にかかると大喜びします。

そして、ウミガメに酒を飲ませて歓待して、海に返します。

そうすると、きっと大漁になると言い伝えられているのです。

ある漁村に、酒が大好きで、どんなに酒を飲んでも酔わない平助という独り者の漁師がいました。

彼は、ちょっと金が入ると、すぐに酒を飲んでしまいますので、村の皆からは正覚坊とあだ名されてました。

ある嵐の晩、平助がいつものように酒を飲んでますと、玄関の戸を叩くものがありました。

Shokakubo is a large sea turtle.

Fishermen are overjoyed when a sea turtle is caught in a seine net.

They give the sea turtle a drink and welcome it back to the sea.

Legend has it that if they do this, they are sure to catch a big catch.

In a certain fishing village, there was a lone fisherman named Heisuke who loved sake and never got drunk no matter how much he drank.

Whenever he had a little money, he would immediately start drinking, earning him the nickname "Shokaku-bo," or "the drunkard.

One stormy night, while Heisuke was drinking as usual, there was a knock at the front door.

ある一人の強盗が、家に押し入り金品を奪って逃走。

しかし、強盗はすぐに警官の手によって捕まる。

が、強盗は警官からサーベルを奪って殺して逃亡。

四年後。強盗は警官殺しの犯人としてつかまる。

明治26年６月７日。熊本。

犯人は福岡から護送され、熊本の停車場に到着する。

警官殺しの犯人をひと目見ようと、停車場には多くの人だかりができていた。

小泉八雲もそのうちの一人で、彼も犯人の様子を見に来ていた。

However, the robber is soon caught by the police.

However, the robber takes a saber from the policeman, kills him, and escapes.

Four years later. The robber is caught for the murder of the policeman.

June 7, 1893. Kumamoto.

The criminal is escorted from Fukuoka and arrives at the Kumamoto depot.

A large crowd gathers at the depot to get a glimpse of the police murderer.

Koizumi Yakumo is one of them, and he also comes to see the murderer.
