むかし、信濃の国の殿様は「年寄は役に立たない」と、70を越した年寄は残らず島流しにしてしまいました。

信濃の国の更科に母と二人で暮らしていたお百姓は、「無慈悲な島流しにするくらいなら、自分で母を捨ててこよう」と決意しました。

八月、十五夜の晩に、お百姓はお月見をしようと母を誘い、寂しい野道へと分け入りました。

Once upon a time, a feudal lord in the land of Shinano had all the old people over 70 thrown away on an island, saying that they were useless.

A farmer living with his mother in Sarashina, Shinano, decided that he would rather abandon his mother than be ruthlessly carried off to the island.

In August, on the night of the fifteenth night of the eighth month, the farmer invited his mother to go moon gazing and went into a lonely wild road.
