昔、玄翁和尚という徳の高いお坊さんがいました。

日本各地を巡り歩き、奥州から都へ帰ろうとする途中、下野の那須野の原に立ち寄りました。

秋の陽が落ちるのは早く、この先に宿のあるあてもないので野宿をすることにしました。

せめて、木の陰かなにかないかと探すと、石が一つポツンとありました。

玄翁和尚は、石に笠を乗せ、草を結んで枕とし、石の傍らで休みました。

Once upon a time, there was a highly virtuous monk named Gen'ou.

On his way back to the capital from Oshu, he stopped at Nasunohara in Shimono.

The sun was going down fast in autumn, and there was no place to stay ahead, so I decided to stay in the field.

When he looked for some shade, he found a stone.

The monk put his shade on the stone, tied some grass to it as a pillow, and rested beside the stone.
