土佐長岡郡の奥に本山というところがあり、その本山に吉延という谷があった。

その谷には、鹿や猪という大型の獣がいるので、猟師は皆、目をつけていたが……

その谷には時々、不思議なことがあるので、気の弱いものは避けていかなかった。

There was a place called Motoyama in the back of Tosa Nagaoka County, and in Motoyama there was a valley called Yoshinobe.

In that valley, there are large beasts called deer and wild boar, so all the hunters had their eyes on it.

Sometimes strange things happened in that valley, so the faint-hearted did not avoid it.
