尾生は、橋のたもと、川のすぐ近くで、女を待っていた。

日が暮れかかり、小さく星が見えるようになっても、女は来ない。

やがて、潮が満ち、尾生の周りに水が満ちてきても、女は来ない。

At the foot of the bridge, near the river, Ooi waited for the woman.

Even though the sun was setting and he could see a few stars, the woman did not come.

Even when the tide rose and the water began to fill up around him, she did not come.
