「どういう動機で私が刑法学者になったかとおっしゃるんですか」と、四十を越したばかりのＫ博士は言った。

「そうですねえ、一口にいうと私のこの傷ですよ」

あまりのことに私はしばらく、物も言わずに博士の顔を見つめた。

そして、K博士は、傷跡の原因となった事件を話し始めた。

I stared at his face for a while without saying a word.

Then Dr. K began to tell me about the incident that caused the scar.
