延宝二年の話である。土佐藩の徒目付・横山源兵衛の許へある日精悍な顔つきをした若い男が来た。

彼は、罪を犯して死刑となった兄の弟だから、自分も罰されるものとして出頭したのだった。

It was the second year of Enpo. One day, a young man with a fearless face came to Genpei Yokoyama, an attendant of the Tosa Clan.
