昔、江戸小石川に鈴木と云う旗本があって、屋敷は江戸川の岸、中の橋に近い所にあった。

この鈴木の家来に忠五郎と云う足軽がいた。体格も良く怜悧で、仲間からの信頼も厚かった。

しかし、忠五郎は蒼白く衰えて来た。そこである晩、忠五郎が丁度家を抜け出そうとする時、一人の年取った侍が彼を呼んでいった。

Once upon a time, there was a bannerman named Suzuki in Koishikawa, Edo, whose residence was located on the bank of the Edo River, near the Nakanobashi Bridge.

Suzuki's retainer was a footman named Chugoro. He was a big and smart man, and was trusted by his companions.

One day, however, Chugoro began going out without permission, and his companions became aware of it. At first, no one said anything about this strange behavior.

However, Chugoro began to pale and fade. One night, just as Chugoro was about to leave the house, an old samurai called him.
