New Fan

Great story, love the facts about New York. Gives me a sense of being in New York. Enjoy all the dialog.

In a Rut

Linda Fairstein is getting in a rut. This book could have been great. I love murder mysteries but "The Deadhouse" is too much like all of her other books to be very enjoyable. There is the woman cop that no one listens to even though her intuition is 99% accurate, the token male that supports her to a limited degree, the female victim, the male perpetrator, and a couple of twists. Though I have a number of criticisms of the book I want to highlight two as examples. I know that books don't/shouldn't mirror real life but seeing as just under 80% of murder victims in real life are males can't we have just one book that deviates from the formula of female victims? Why is it that the female detective, despite being right many times, never earns any trust/credit from her colleagues?

All the characters sounded the same(men and women) and his attempts accents was painful. His voice is better suited to a old school western or something like that.

easy to follow

Great first book in the series!! Give me more!

I love a good cozy mystery, Bree definitely has potential for stepping in it Jessica Fletcher style! The only thing that bothered me in this book it that it could figure out if it wanted to be a romance too.

Loads of great characters here, with just enough story building to keep you in the loop. I see plenty of potential for more mysteries in this sleepy resort town.

The dynamic with her BFF Meg is perfect. Reminds me of my BFF and I, always pals but telling it like it is, possible getting in mud fights!

The mystery wasn't overly taxing, it had enough twists and angles to keep me on my toes. I was guessing right until the dead giveaway, then it was obvious who the murderer was, if not the motive.

The whole book comes from Bree's POV, which isn't a bad narrative. I love her quirkiness and her menagerie of pets! She gets some lovin throughout the book, but the bedroom door is barely cracked open.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Sara Mackie, who is excellent. She has just the right touch of snark in her read to really sell the character. Great pace throughout the book and terrific energy. I could have used a hint more bass with the men, but that is just me being picky!

I am eager to see what happens next for this cozy mystery series! Fun story kept be giggling!

A little uneven

Moonlighting in Vermont was an uneven book for me. It's told from Bree's point of view and I really did like her. She a trouble-magnet, but she's fun and tries to be optimistic. She loves her animals and seems to more or less work to make money to take care of them. She's not afraid to get dirty, but the mud fight with her best friend was a little unbelievable. She's loyal and honest. And all the guys in town seem to be attracted to her - from the cop to the mechanic to her best friend's brother-in-law.

Very disappointing

I can't tell you how disappointed I was in this book. I have read the previous three fly-fishing mysteries and really enjoyed them and was so looking forward to the fourth one. I wish I had just forgotten it. As a stand alone mystery it's not bad; but as the fourth in a series, it just sucks. It's like the author turned it over to someone else to write. The previous three novels were written in first person and this is written in third. Then to add insult to injury, Dog has become a minor character in his own story. And I really didn't like the ending. It was like Mr Galligan couldn't figure out what to do next, so he just stopped writing. I highly recommend the first three books in this series, but do yourself a favor and stop before you get to this one. You'll be much happier.

Another Fly Fioshing Mystery of a Fly fishing Bum

Another mystery story from the perspective of a fly fishing bum who stumbles into a mystery with again, a fly fishing knot being an integral item in the overall solving of the mystery. Good bedside mystery reading within the context of a fly fishing bum's life.

Collapse of E. Block Nation's Moral/Social Order

In Steinhauer's 'almost brilliant' conclusion to his Yalta Boulevard Sequence(Bridge of Sighs, The Confession, 36 Yalta Boulevard, Liberation Movements, & Victory Square), Steinhauer examines the collapse of the moral and social order (both for a nation and individuals) when a former Eastern Block nation finally rejects its totalitarian regime and leader. 'Victory Square' is stronger and more graceful in its first half, but still manages to close out the series well.

Taken together, the five Yalta Boulevard novels are brilliant in their ability to communicate the narrative arc of East European totalitarianism in both the brutality, but also in the humanity of those individuals seeking to support and destroy its order. If you are going to read one of these novels, invest the time to read them all. While I could arm-chair quarterback my little issues with each novel, the series is definitely worth it. For me, it was similar to how I felt watching the entire HBO series 'the Wire'.

Each Yalta Blvd novel gave a unique perspective that together painted an amazing picture of a place, time and people. Even Steinhauer's conceit of using a fake country seems, in the end, to have been well played. It allowed his novels to grab interesting pieces of Hungarian, Romanian, Yugoslavian history and blend as needed. It is amazing how much good fiction can teach us.

Wow, excellent!

This is the best book in the series but you should read them all, first to last, to have this one make complete sense. When I started the series I thought they might be boring, drab anyway, but that it would show me how miserable life must have been in a Soviet bloc country. The lives depicted were pretty drab and miseerable but Steinhauer does a good job of weaving a story into the lives of the characters. It seems to me the governements of these countries have done a terrible job of helping their people, no only during socialism, communicsm, whatever you want to call it but for basically the last 100 years. In the end these people had the same hopes and dreams we all have, they all want a better life and the opportutnity to live their lives they way they want to. I know this ends the series but it would be interesting to see a cotinuation for the next two decades as well. I'm now offially a fan of Olen Stinhaer, I look forwrd to more tales from him.

Why was it so drawn out? Could have been so much better with a lot of editing.
