Fun Light Read

If you want some light reading before bedtime, or while riding a bus, or waiting in a doctor's office, this would fill the bill. It is a fun read, with characters performing in their predetermined ways. Some discussion of the tourist setting adds a little interest, too.

Read his earlier book The Back Wing instead.

Good knowledge of Hawaii, but disappointing after reading his very funny The Back Wing which makes vampires and werewolves humerous. Care Homes are Murder is a so-so book. Go read The Back Wing instead!

In my opinion it's a pity when Indian crime authors ...

In my opinion it's a pity when Indian crime authors tends to copy the style of american/european crime authors. The posh and trendy "cafe latte" drinking culture described in the book obviously also exists in India, but it appears as if the persons are striving to copy a kind of communication which can be recognized in hundreds of books and movies describing typical american/european urban cultures. Knowing a little bit about Indian culture and and language, it would be so much more interesting and thrilling to get a glimpse into it's unique and colorful characters and ways of communication. The lack of hindi-english kind of deprives the book of the originality and authenticity it could have had, and which would have made it different and exotic compared to hundreds of other crime books.

My thoughts on the Book The Bankster

This being my first exposure to this author, I enjoyed reading this work. As the story is woven around banking, knowledge of banking would enhance the readers' interest and also aid towards better understanding of the scenarios. At times, the author attempts to wrap too many things under cover in the name of suspense, which leads to some mild confusions in the understanding. Story seem to remind one of some popular movie , along with protests against nuclear plants in thickly populated human habitats and the author has cleverly used his banking background and knowledge to spin a thriller around these. Definitely worth a read and am looking forward to reading many more from this author.

Just finished the book!!!!ravi is in line with Amish and ashwin in terms of connecting the dots!!!!!

The complexities of the banking and how people are using it to the fullest is again explained.i am not sure of buying if Ravi releases one more book of this sort as two books more or less on the same plot has already been released.

But I Just enjoyed reading it!!!!!

This was my first Ravi Subramanian book and I loved it! The book was a page turner and could not be put down till completed.

OK read

It was an OK read, not really so entertaining as most of the people make it, really a matter of taste, plot becomes predictable but the way author manoeuvres the intricacies of banking world is really marvelous, even a novice wouldn't have a hrd time understanding what is going on.

Pushing fans' loyalty to the limit

I thought the last couple of novels in this series (The Blood of an Englishman; Dishing the Dirt) were rather too frenetic, with outlandish plots, and with Agatha a thin caricature of her former self, sizing up every new male that she meets as a possible mate. That feeling is even more intense in this new one, where plot, motive and character seem to have gone to the wall in favour of pure 'activity', with Agatha and Toni separately driving endlessly from one location to another in search of a lead. (A lead to what? Who knows, as I forgot the so-called plot lines after Chapter Two.) So this story becomes just a dizzying cavalcade of slightly eccentric characters who enter, say their bit, and depart. It feels like a clutter of small vignettes pasted together into a hastily-assembled novel. As narrator, Penelope Keith is a wizard at instilling character and wit into each new voice, but even she has her work cut out attempting so many different people.

This lack of cohesion and apparent rush allows some silly mistakes to creep in, such as a main character's eye colour changing from 'hazel' in Chapter 6 to 'blue' in Chapter 7, and Sir Charles Fraith being referred to as a lord (by Mrs Bloxby, no less).

The biggest sadness in all this frantic coming-and-going is the loss of the charm and pace of the earlier novels. Agatha spends no time at all in her home village of Carsely other than to hunker down after another exhausting day on the road.

Great story, Great narration!

I enjoyed every minute of this audio book, and am amazed that it is the author's debut novel. She writes wonderfully, with full, rich characters, and a compelling mystery that makes one keep guessing, "Who done it?!". As an artist myself, I especially enjoyed the references to art and painting, and her colorful, and often humorous descriptions of the scenes and characters.

The narrator did a fantastic job, and enriched the story and experience. She was perfect!

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with likable, true to life characters, that keeps you guessing until the end. I'll miss those folks, and can't wait to listen to the next book in the series.

Read (Listen) to it, its worth the time. Great combination of the past and present.

What made the experience of listening to Death on Canvas the most enjoyable?

This book was easy to listen too. The characters came to life and I felt like they were my friends and neighbors. It was so well written that you could see in your minds eye the Montana landscape and the colors and feel of the paintings. It was like being in a high end gallery looking at the best paintings the West has to offer.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

This was a real page turner. The twists and turns kept you excited and wondering what was going to happen next. I became invested in Jessie's quest to find out about the murder of Amber and what happened to the Moran paintings. I wanted to see more of Thomas Moran's paintings and learn about his history of painting in the Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Park.

Which character as performed by Moe Egan was your favorite?

Arvid Abrahmsen, the Norwegian cop made me laugh. If you know anyone with Norwegian ancestors you will chuckle at the idiosyncrasies and traditions that carry on for generations

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I loved this audio book and can't wait for the next one in the series to come out. It makes long trips in the car go by fast. I enjoyed the antics of Jack the cat and the realistic and well researched information on what a good Search and Rescue dog can do.

Great Start on the Riley Drake Series!

Wow, this is the first story I've listened by Julie Hyzy and was very impressed!

The plot and characters were great! I really liked Riley, she was tough and determine to find who killed John Stratton's wife, even if it was him. Along the way she did uncover a few secretes, and after listening to the entire story, the name of the book fits the story perfectly.

As far as the narrations goes, I thought Angel did a great job overall. I've listened to other stories narrator by her, so I guess I am used to her voice and how she portrays characters.

Just a bad narration I just couldn't take it only made it through 20 minutes.

Would you try another book from Julie Hyzy and/or Angel Clark?

I am a big fan of Julie Hyzy. I have read and loved all her White House Chef series and I will read more in this series too. As for Angel Clark I didn't enjoy her reading of this book in fact it took away from the story for me. So if Angel is the narrator for future books in this series I will read them and not listen.

What other book might you compare Playing with Matches to and why?

I can't really say I could think of another book to compare it to.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Angel has a nice voice and she reads fine but I just couldn't get into her. The only reason I finished the book was because the story kept me going.

Was Playing with Matches worth the listening time?

No I wish I had read it and not listened to it.

A good start to this series

What did you like best about this story?

I love female sleuth stories. This one did not disappoint. It did not contain unreal scenarios that Riley could not get out of. It was real and entertaining.

The opening elevator scene and an unlikely friendship that forged.

I wasn't too happy about what happened to the painter to say anything more would be a spoiler alert.

good story

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. This story was pretty good. The idea of older retired-ish people investigating and participating in murders was great. It was pretty easy to figure out who at least one of the culprits was early on. Nothing to surprising but it was entertaining to listen to.

Boneyard Beach: A Folly Beach Mystery started out well enough, but it had a hard time holding my interest. There was nothing compelling me to keep listening, no great lead up to whodunit. It is just so, so.

Steve Rausch had an easy voice to listen to, however, his character voices didnt vary enough to be able to distinguish who was talking without the he said or she said preceding or following the dialog.

Getting Better

This story seemed to be more complex and nuanced than previous books in the series and the narrator has improved significantly from the beginning of the previous book to the end of this one. One strong negative in this series is Brianna's fiancee Cooper going back and forth as to whether or not he believes in her ability to see and communicate with ghosts. After over a dozen cases in which she has yet to be shown as deluded, hallucinating, falsifying, or in any way mistaken, disbelief would seem to be very difficult to maintain.
