Review of Taking Earth

WOW!!!! This story takes you into a bad situation and makes everything seem as though it will be alright. Leta is a headstrong woman in a job that is considered a mans job. Trying to prove herself and find herself all together isn't easy then when the rain pours down and strange things start to happen everything changes in a heartbeat. I fell in love with the little girl Kia, she has an old soul and is very smart for her age. When Leta and Kia come together things get rough and Leta finds herself wanting to protect the little girl and save everyone else while she is at it. Tarian and Alex make an appearance in this story bringing everything together in a very mysterious way with all kinds of twists and turns. Melinda VanLone brought me into this world and kept me there. I am anxiously waiting for more.

"They done came..." Really?!?

Please note: the following review reflects my preferences on the use of slang...especially when applied to only certain characters of particular ethnicities. Please have a grain of salt on hand.

The storyline was interesting, rambling but interesting. However, the book was extremely difficult for me to read. The over-use of slang in an attempt to capture 'ethnic street vernacular' is distracting at best and offensive at worst. I have elderly family members with less than a fourth grade education who don't speak in such a broken way. I (for the most part) enjoyed the other books in the series. This one,primarily because of the wording, had me rushing to get to the end!

I can appreciate tapping into the vernacular to set tone and build personality. In this instance, it was over-done.

Well written

Enjoyed the entire series. Has left itself open to future "House Of Xannon" novels. Author left nothing to be desired and clearly distinguished between those with a sailors mouth and those who didn't.

Good story

I liked it but there was too much description of and too many instances involved in the transformation of Letha. Lots of repetition. I like the continuing story but this one was not my favorite.

Great read, great story. I prefer very little profanity and the lead character's language is highly profane. The profanity fits well with the character. I just don't like profanity. I was an EMT and worked ER in different hospitals and settings, so when something is graphic for me then it is fairly graphic. I do not enjoy sexual content at all. What sex is in the story is necessary for the story line. I'll be reading the next book.

Sweet Entertaining Cozy

What made the experience of listening to A Wee Murder in My Shop the most enjoyable?

I thought this was a really sweet little story with fun and interesting characters. I loved the Scottish Ghost bit too.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters were really endearing. There's a hint of romance too, and I just loved the settings: both small town USA, and small town Scotland.

Which character as performed by Tanya Eby was your favorite?

Probably Macbeth. I'm a sucker for Scottish accents.

This is a feel good mystery...so even though there is a death, it's the deeper mystery and characters that pull you in. A great listen and safe enough to listen to if there are kids around. I'll come back to this series. I'd love to see what happens next.

Review of the Series Through Book 3

Quick overview: This is a fine series for those who like a cozy. The ghost theme is consistent with similar books in this sub-genre with this ghost being much less irritating a personality than is common.

Series review (first 3 books): I had hoped these would improve from book-to-book, but unfortunately, they didn't. The endings are uniformly implausible, and in book #2 the ending is confusing. The "written by an English major" feeling permeates all three of the books to date, and that is unfortunate as it makes them feel a bit self important for what they are.

There is an odd theory of character development at work in the series to date. We learn unnecessary details about characters (mild spoiler eg: the drinking problem of one of the regular characters) and there are undeveloped mild plot lines (eg: the relationship between Peggy and the woman her fiancé had the affair with in book #1). The main character is almost completely without empathy or personal insight about people or dogs (mild spoiler eg: sheesh, how did she manage not to know the dog needed water and food in book #3? My gosh.) These problems give the books a choppy, unedited quality that I found distracting.

The world these take place in feels oddly unfamiliar as well (mild spoiler eg: it's hard to imagine people falling in love and getting engaged with no one noticing at all, especially when another love subplot seems so obvious to everyone in town and is yet unconsummated in any way). Again, this is distracting and makes the author feel young, or at least early in her career.

Regarding the narration: The narrator forgets how to pronounce the word sporran halfway through book #3.

This is the latest in Jane Casey's excellent series of Maeve Kerrigan books. It was a great listen and I look forward to the next.

Further adventures and investigations with Maeve

Another good Kerrigan novel with lots of twists and turns. Good case, with interesting plot. Maeve's personal life tends to take over at times but good overall. Lennon is a really excellent narrator. I would recommend this entire series, there is good continuity between books and the main characters do seem real (I love Derwent's obnoxiousness!). This and its predecessor non the series are, in my opinion, the best in the series. I hope there is another Maeve and Derwent adventure to look forward to soon!

ANOTHER GOODIE

This Book had several strands to it and the reader was very good. It was a very easy listen, and I think it would appeal to people who like crime fiction generally. I do hope there will be more Maeve Kerrigan stories.

After The Fire - a good read.

From the first introduction to the final chapter two stories intertwine.

The main characters are written well, and build on the characterisations in previous books.

I would recommend this book as a good read but think that it would be better to read previous books in this series first.

I will look out for future books by Jane Casey!

I felt this narrator caught the essence of the humor, but it was more like reading than previous JK stories narrated by Jason Starr. And Eric Stuart read it fast- this was the first time I ever noticed this on an audiobook.

I laughed a few times, but it was a short story, not a novel.

A fun who did it.

This is a new genre for me; also a new author and narrator. The book is a fast easy read that makes it a good choice between my non-fiction reading.

This is book three in the Fat Ladies Sing Cozy Murder Series. I have not read the other books in the series but had no difficulties following the story. This book could be easily read as a stand-alone book. The story takes place in Wachita, Texas. Our protagonist is Lovita, who co-owns a beauty shop with her best friend, Sue Jan. Lovita is busy planning her wedding to Hudson. Sue Jan is having a new home built. On a visit to the building site, Lovita and Sue Jan find the contractor dead. Lovita and friends are off to solve the murder. Oh, did I mention the women say they are big bodaciously beautiful.

The book is well written. The pace is fast. The dialogue is full of humor and sassy attitude. The plot has enough twists and turns to keep the readers attention. The character development is good. Over all it is a fun book to read for an escape.

Michelle Babb did an excellent job narrating the book. If Babb is not a native Texan, she sure did a great job with the Texas twang.

Enjoy the start of the Sam Dyke series.

I have had this book in my collection and just re-discovered this author.

Altered Life is an excellent start to the life of Sam Dyke PI. He is hired to help a company with a few mysterious and undiscovered problems

when the deaths start and we are introduced to Sam's lifestyle and work ethic along with the sites and weather near London.

There are many surprises revealed as the plot moves along this reader found this book very interesting as the twists and turns are revealed.

Now on to book 2, The Private Lie.

Refreshing Detective Fare

I found Sam Dyke refreshingly better than many another run of the mill private eye as featured in countless series novels. Author Keith Dixon is gifted with a keen observer's eye for detail, which shows in the plot of this thriller as well as in the personal mannerisms and thinking processes of the fictional detective he's created. The descriptions of places, people and things was crisp, as was the dialog here.

Moreover, and importantly, the dialog and descriptions worked well with the fast paced plot.

Amazing

This is an extremely fast moving story; a page turner, if you will, and holds plenty of twists to keep the reader just a bit off balance right up until the end.

Okay

I received this book in return for an honest review. First, the good points: It is full of suspense, twists and turns with likeable, complex characters. The downside: There was too much description to keep the pace moving. I'm not a great fan of British novels.

Kept me hooked

I enjoyed this book very much. Sam Dyke is some sort of anti hero; and the book has twists and turns that make a good reading.

I gave it four stars because the end felt a little rushed.

Hysterican twist and turns noir mystery!

What made the experience of listening to Murder at the Bijou the most enjoyable?

Murder at the Bijou is a story based in the 40's, where Joe Wilmot runs a cheap yet popular movie show in his small town. Since a noir novel always involves villians and damsels in distress, Joe has a lover in addiition to his homely wife as well as a millionaire competitor angling for his share of the theatre business. Hilarity ensues when there is murder, bribery, and double cross left and right.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Surprise ending! Thought I had it in the bag when in reality no one could have predicted this ending.

Have you listened to any of Mike Denniss other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to and will continue to listen to Mike Dennis' performances. He has a perfect voice for noir.

Great Murder Mystery!

**Audiobook Review**

This was suck a twisted and mind f*ck book. I loved it. Every time I thought I had it figured out what was going on or what had happened, I was surprised... and believed the twist.

I loved that while there was still the romance and erotic scenes, there was a heavy and well thought out murder mystery to go with it. Would I have liked more romance and naughty-ness? Absolutely, who wouldn't? But the title told me there was likely to be a nice thick plot and I was happy with the balance.

This was my first Jamie Fessenden book and I would happily read more of his books.

Cliff Bergen was the narrator and I felt like he gave the story a unique light with his voice.

Not very compelling

Jesse finds himself in the right place at the wrong time and is suddenly embroiled in a murder mystery. His desire to solve the crime is rivaled by his attraction to the somewhat older detective on the case, Kyle Dubois.

Kyle, a bi-sexual who has only ever been with a woman, is immediately attracted to Jesse, but dismisses him due to his age.

Stuart is killed and pretty much everyone is a suspect. With Jesses help (Kyle reluctantly allows him to be part of the investigation) they manage to solve the crime, but not before Jesse is almost killed and Kyle has to admit his lust for Jesse might be more like love.

I admit right up front that this is not my typical book. I really like Jamie Fessendens writing style and have enjoyed previous works by the author, but Im not a mystery fan. I like more romance than whodunit and this is definitely the latter.

As a result, my enjoyment of this book was less than it would be if you were setting out to enjoy a mystery with a bit of romance thrown in. Which is what this book is.

However, there were parts I adored. I absolutely loved Kyles exploration into gay sex and Jesses handling of the entire situation. I thought Kyles partner was a riot and the ease with which he accepted Kyles new love interest was fantastic.

I didnt love the mystery and grew tired of the scenes with the frat boys involved in Stuarts life.

If mystery is more your thing I think you will really enjoy this book, but if you are looking for a more romance focused book, you might want to take a pass.

Read the series in order for continuity

I've read all four books (no real spoiler that one's intended as a series conclusion), and while I don't recall the details of the other three specifically, I retain an impression that the first two were strong on plot and setting, while the third was weaker, focusing on Apelu as a character. This one had a suspenseful plot, with a denouement I didn't see coming at all, although I was disappointed that setting seemed to play less of a part as the story went on. Doctor Laura was a terrific complement to Apelu as a secondary investigator, along with Officer Frost (who becomes a protégé of his). His girlfriend, Avelisa, seemed rather ... unstable, shall we say; however, she's quite the change from his estranged, religious, frankly frumpy wife. I wasn't real thrilled with the plot angle regarding their baby, especially the graphic details of her conception! Strange thing is that even though the pregnancy and events afterward are covered, it didn't feel as though two years had passed - no jumping around as such.

Series recommend for its unique Samoan background, and overall plotting. Phil Gigante's narration is one of those he-was-made-to-read-this fits!

Love the Garcia Sisters

I recently read Heard It Through the Grapevine, and could not wait to read the second in the Dead Sister Talking series: Jailhouse Glock. I was not disappointed. The wonderfully sassy sister, Tessa, who has died, returns to her sister Maddyâs aid in this installment of the series. Tessa shows herself to Maddy at work one evening and announces she is there to help her out of trouble. (At that point her sister didnât know there was any problem.) Maddy is a widow, and a rookie cop. On a holiday weekend, she is the only one working in the small town police station, when she is set up for the murder of a drunk in jail under her watch. The Garcia sisters also include Lainey, Deena, and Kate. Together, the five sisters circle the wagons to exonerate Maddy.

This loud, loving, joking family shares in each otherâs joys, pains, and challenges. Joining together over food and drinks, they are a formidable team. No one who knew Tessa in life would have envisioned her as the guardian angel of the family. Thatâs part of the fun in this series. Since I come from a large, loud, and loving family, myself, I truly enjoy the interaction of the sisters. Just like my own family, where we may joke and tease each other, for the sisters itâs a united front against the rest of the world. Lipperman has given the characters laugh out loud dialogue, and enjoyable personalities. Each of the sisters is a strong, independent woman with their own place in their small town world. This is a well-paced book, and the plot provides many twists and turns as you try to guess who is the murderer.

I work full time, and Iâm a wife, mother, and grandmother. There is a lot going on throughout my busy days. Reading this series provides a sublime escape, and I highly recommend it for everyone. One of my tests of a good story is âJust One More Chapterâ. You all have done it, when you know you should turn out the light and go to sleep, but you mutter to yourself âjust one more chapterâ, and continue reading. Jailhouse Glock passed this test with flying colors.

This story will definitely stand on its own, but if you can get both books, read Heard It Through the Grapevine first. Laineyâs story will provide additional background for this one. Iâm eagerly waiting the next book in the series.

Engagingly Terrific Read

Once again, Liz has delivered a well-written light drama featuring one of the Garcia sisters and this time Maddie is on the hook and the wonderfully sarcastic Tessa make her appearance known. I like how we know who did it but really donât know who did it until the pieces fit together. Everyone is a suspect and the fun is watching how it all plays out. I like how the Garcia sisters band together in the face of adversary in support of one another.
