Thought-provoking character-driven mystery

I really enjoyed the first Jimmy Vega mystery, Land of Careful Shadows. With this one, Suzanne Chazin has raised the bar. I had a few minor issues with the writing in the first book, this one was flawless.

While this works as a stand-alone mystery, I think part of the reason I enjoyed it so much is the fact that I was already familiar with Detective Jimmy Vega and Adele Figueroa, with whom Jimmy is now in a relationship. Jimmy and Adele are trying to make their relationship work, but then a decision they make one evening results in both of them feeling guilty for the death of a newborn baby.

Suzanne Chazin once again tackles the issues of immigration and the lives and relationships of documented and undocumented immigrants. The focus on the lives of children faced with the deportation of a parent was truly heart-breaking. Ms. Chazin has an amazing talent for making all the characters feel incredibly authentic. I think it would be hard to read this book with its wonderful imagery and not feel deeply touched by it. The sense of doom that kept building right up to the suspenseful finale kept me listening to this for hours on end. The audio is narrated by Thom Rivera and he does a fantastic job. So much so, that I have purchased the next audiobook in this series although I already had the print version.

A really compelling and powerful mystery, which is topical and contains subtle but thought-provoking social commentary. Highly recommended if you enjoy character-driven crime fiction with an intelligent storyline.

Really, Really Funny

Hilarious, rich and warm characters. Andy and her Mom should be a TV series!! A Grace Kelley look a like Mum, with a Lindsey Lohan look alike for a daughter.

A Deb With a Different Point of View

What a great way to introduce spice without getting graphic! So much fun to watch Andy get in and out of sticky situations. Her mother is beginning to be a problem. Andy and Brian need their time!

This Part of the series seemed a bit rushed, like the author couldn't wait to get it over with.

Susan Mc Bride is always a good goofy read for the subway or bus, and most of the characters are fairly likable. But in this particular novell, I felt the main character, (Andy) was entirely too pushed around for someone who's prone to such great bravery. Especially wen it's often so spontaneous. It seemed like every few minutes she was doing something for reasons she did not know. It kind of compromised her strength. Never the less, the story was fun, tho a bit rushed and I did enjoy it. I especially liked the surprise ending.

Maybe Her Best Yet

Too Pretty to Die is a sad commentary on the importance of beauty both in the world of television and also in everyday life. Miranda DuBois is a true beauty, pageant queen, and television anchor. But she has passed the magic "30" mark and is concerned about her future on the tube, particularly as she has received some anonymous viewer emails commenting on the deterioration of her looks. So she goes to Dr. Sonja Madhavi, celebrity skin doctor, toast of Dallas. And her botox is botched, leaving her with a twitchy eye and a droopy mouth. So, drunk and brandishing a gun, she crashes a "Pretty Party" and threatens Dr. Madhavi.

Coincidentally Andy is there at the behest of her friend and society reporter Janet Graham. Andy, Janet, Miranda, and the hostess are all former schoolmates as well. They manage to subdue her and Andy takes her home to sleep it off. Thinking it's safe to leave her, she goes home to Brian. But the next morning Miranda is dead. The police are sure it's suicide. But her laptop and cell phone are missing.

Creative murder mystery

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the creative detail of Helen's getting annoyed at not being suspected so deciding to demonstrate the possibility. I also really appreciated the way the main character suffers from lupus and is disabled by that but shows that with determination and using her contacts, she can do what is necessary. She also demonstrates that though her body may suffer, her mind is still sharp.

Lisa Valdini performs the narration of this book in an excellent manner. Each characters voice suits her or him perfectly. I could see the upper class lawyer Tate versus the lower class driver Jack. I also could see how annoying Melissa must be.

This book is very well done.

Don't waste your time

I should have read the reviews more carefully. If I had I would have been warned about how unrealistic and time consuming this book is. It makes no sense and is full of contradictions. The lead character wants to be left alone but seeks out a murderer, making friends along the way. She is 45 and has given her nieces power of attorney over her finances and is constantly in a power struggle with them for control of her life. She finds a woman murdered in her yard and is angry that she is not considered a suspect. All of the characters are flat and not very likable and the story was drawn out and boring. Listening to this book was a complete waste of time.

Sadly dull and very annoying

Would you try another book written by Gin Jones or narrated by Lisa Valdini?

No I wouldn't, the author's characters and writing style were too annoying for me. And the reader's slightly slow monotonous time did not help.

What didnt you like about Lisa Valdinis performance?

I tried to ignore the lack of different voices for the characters (apart from the murder victim before she was murdered), and the slow speed of narration, but was a contributing factor to giving up early.

What character would you cut from A Dose of Death?

I did not like any of them, so would not make a difference.

Any additional comments?

Dislikable main character. Continual references to her Lupus, her pain, her disability. Her daughters were worried about her not coping on her own, but after murder in her garden they were not immediately particularly concerned. Helen is not shocked, upset, horrified or react as a real person would who just found a bloody body.

Drop in not out

Another fun read from Susan McBride. While the culprit was revealed to me early on in this story it was a good read with interesting characters and I raised my opinion even higher of Cissy. Quite a woman.

This series is a winner

The relationship between the reluctant debutante, Andrea, and her socialite mother, Cissy continues to evolve in this 3rd book of the series. With the unexpected deaths of two of Cissy's friends; Cissy decides to go undercover and play detective, much to Andrea's horror. The story is entertaining, albeit pretty predictable as far as who dun it. The big question is: Has Cissy attracted a beau? Will she be responsive? And, most important, how will Daddy's girl Andrea feel about the relationship?

Fans of the series will enjoy it; and, since each book is a stand alone story, newcomers will probably be motivated to go back and read the first two books.

Excellent

Once again Susan McBride has thrilled me with the characters, with the storyline, with the twists, and with the whole shebang!

I really like this series! I enjoyed this book in the series a lot! I really like that Andy and Cissy seem to be connecting in a more personal way. Cissy is lighter, more accessible!

Humor and murder make this a delightful mystery

Susan's amateur detective mother-daughter team are delightfully zany, but ultimately effective in solving murders in an upscale retirement community. A fast and fun read!

Debutante Rebel

I love this Series! And the narrator-Oh my gosh! She has the perfect voice! I wish we were best friends! Seriously she is just perfect as Andy Kendricks. I really like Andy. She seems so real, and you really feel that she deeply cares about people. Her mom, Cissy, might be from another generation, but she really isn't as shallow as one might think. She cares for people in her own way. And even though Andy doesn't do things the way Cissy wants her to, she still loves her daughter and I suspect, is a little in awe of how Andy goes about living her life.

Lousy ending

These books will never win a Pulitzer- but this one ended on a big clunk.

Disappointed

I thought the story was good until Andrea broke her mother's heart by eloping. Very disappointed and the author should know she messed up.

I got a headache after abut 5 minutes

Try as I might this simply was not a book I can understand listen to. The narrator drove me crazy. might be a good book but for me I couldn't handle the narrator. I'll be careful not to purchase any other book where Catherine LaMoreaux.

Author and Narrator Deliver Quality

Would you consider the audio edition of Engulfed to be better than the print version?

I loved the narration of "Engulfed." I had not thought that an audio book would grab my imagination as this book has. I hate to think what I would have missed had I tried to concentrate on reading the print version.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I really enjoyed the story line and the adventure it took my on.

What does Catherine LaMoreaux bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

This audio book pleasantly surprised me, especially after many years with audio books that have put me to sleep. Catherine LaMoreaux has a finesse and captivating personality that shines through in a way I image the storytellers of old would have used to share stories to listeners in many a fire lit room. Why don't they have such great narration of textbooks?

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I only had the time to enjoy books in one sitting, "Engulfed" would have been one of my top choices to spend time listening to.

A MUST READ!!!

Warning, the contents of this book are addictive, you find yourself restless, unproductive and flat out unresponsive. If you experience loss of social skills, family life and or sleep deprivation; buy another novel by Peter. This story immersive, complex and masterly crafted. It poses the question, what if we continue down this path we've started. What if opportunity gave way to "equal opportunity". If faith gave way to "facts". The depth and evolution of the character keeps you wanting more. As you explore the perfect America, you can find yourself introspecting and really learning about yourself as well as the world you live in.

Can't go wrong with Peter Meredith

Loved it! Peter Meredith delivers an entrancing story. The characters are well developed and the scenario presented is believable. You can't go wrong with this book.

No. Interesting story but it contains to much bible talk. I almost gave up on the book.

A pretty good book but for me it was ruined by too much talk about God and Jesus. So I would not recommend this book to anybody who does not like to be preached to about Jesus and God.

Immaculate from beginning to end.

In a country that is forever changing; the story brings light to a lot of gray areas in politics that a lot of people will never see. If this helps one person , then he's already done his job. After reading this amazing book I will recommend it to all of my friends and family. Peter Meredith amazes me again, having not read any of his books outside of the zombie genre, it truly shows how brilliant this man's mind is. Suspenseful from beginning to end!

Religious drivel

This book came up as a recommendation by audible based on my previous reads. I have never purchased a religious book previously Not worth it. Religious book trying to hide in scifi. Description had no mention of it either. Not impressed. Wasted my money

I absolutely love this book!

This is one of my favorite books and when it was released to audio I knew I had to listen to it. Lisa Larsen did a fantastic job bringing this story alive. I had such a hard time hitting that pause button I just wanted to keep listening till it was finished. With the narration you could feel the suspense and emotions from the characters that much more. I can't rave about this book enough.
