    Title: The Game-Players of Titan
    Author: Philip K. Dick
    Narrator: Christopher Lane
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 43 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-15-13
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 43 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Years ago, Earth and Titan fought a war and Earth lost. The planet was irradiated and most of the surviving population is sterile. The few survivors play an intricate and unending game called Bluff at the behest of the sluglike aliens who rule the planet. At stake in the game are two very important commodities: land and spouses. Pete Garden just lost his wife and Berkeley, California, but he has a plan to win them back. That is, if he isnt derailed by aliens, psychic traitors, or his new wife.
The Game-Players of Titan is both satire and adventure, examining the ties that bind people together and the maddening peccadilloes of bureaucracy, whether the bureaucrats are humans or aliens.

    Game, set, match!
"Anyhow, Pete Garden, you were psychotic and drunk and on amphetamines and hallucinating, but basically you perceived the reality that confronts us"
Philip K. Dick, The Game-Players of Titan
Books seem to float into my life in pairs, like aces, kings, or quite often twos. I guess I could count "The Game-Players of Titan" as my second gambling novel in a month. The first was Jonathan Lethem's A Gambler's Anatomy: A Novel. There is something fascinating by the whole literary genre of game novels (King, Queen, Knave, The Glass Bead Game, Oscar and Lucinda, The Gambler, Daniel Deronda*, The Music of Chance*, and more).
Games of chance and skill allow good writers to look into some of life's big questions of causation, death, love with the ability to dance between the coldness of luck/chance and the warmth of skill. Philip K. Dick uses the basics of a game of chance to introduce the idea of a group of people on Earth who gamble not for small stakes, but for cities and counties. Pots are filled with Berkeley and Detroit instead of watches and coins. Add to this mix, drugs, paranoia, aliens, and the pot both thickens and grows.
I usually walk away from a Dick novel amazed in the same way I'm amazed at Darwin. You see what he did, understand the idea almost instantly, and kick yourself for not being born first and thinking in a way that produces the end result. Dick seems naturally talented at looking at the world from a slightly warped perspective. He seems to both float in a latescent (lactescent?) zone by himself, but at the same time he is able to hold onto the teats of the world tight enough to squeeze out an amazing story every couple years. There is a reason I keep coming back to PKD -- either he is crazy or I am.
    * I have yet to read these.
    Titanic Fun
Flying talking cars. Telepathic, precognitive and telekinetic abilities. Benevolent alien invaders who look like giant slugs. Nearly ubiquitous sterility depopulating a planet of nearly immortal humans. Drugs, psychosis, hallucination. Welcome to one of the many worlds of PKD. What makes this world that much more unique is the game of Bluff, a board game reminiscent of the Game of Life in which the stakes are all too real -- wives, lives, property, social status.
Written in 1963 and featuring a weapon of mass destruction invented by the East Germans and detonated by Red China, TGPoT can be easily interpreted in the context of its Cold War era -- how suburban Americans adapt to being conquered by "alien" invaders (50s-60s sci-fi aliens always acting as analogues for the Red Menace, the Communist threat).

    Soul Rider Book Five
This is the surprising conclusion to the Soul Rider Saga. The author tells us that he had not intended to write it, but has indeed carried the saga forward. Fans will be glad he did.

Holding the tool of chaos - a decoder prototype they stole from the Solar Patrol, thus making this security apparatus of the elite interplanetary peacekeeping force ineffective - a radical band of space outlaws known as The Red Dawn plans destruction.
    Members Reviews:
Red Dawn seems to be a common name...
Space Cops High Moon is the last in the series. And that makes me sad, because I feel it was just starting to get great. In this novel the two Solar Police Officers, Joss O'Bannion and Evan Glyndower, are trying to find some lost equipment on Mars and run into something bigger and more dangerous than anything they have ever had to deal with before.
Tons of humor and action, jokes about manga and classical TV series such as Dr. WHO?, quotes from Monty Python and True Grit. Think High Noon with lasers and air tight space suits. The science is slightly hard as with the rest of the books but the focus is still on the cool characters and swiftly moving plot.
    It's a Western... On Mars!
It's supposed to be a nice quiet vacation on Mars. Then someone starts shooting.
The third book in the Space Cops series has officers O'Bannion and Glyndower looking for a stolen Solar Patrol Communications Array. Their search takes them from the lawless mining towns of Mars, to an all out battle with a fanatical (and well armed) fringe group called the Red Dawn. This book is a quick, fun read with an exciting and memorable final battle.

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Army Air Force nurse Matilda MacElroy interviewed the pilot of the UFO that crashed at Roswell, NM, in 1947, who revealed that 3,000 members of "The Domain" were attacked and captured by forces of the Old Empire in 5965 BCE. They were given amnesia and sent to Earth to live as humans. The Domain Force deployed a mission to contact and recover these lost personnel from Earth. Amnesia/thought-control mechanisms are installed around Earth to ensure that it remains a secret prison planet under the control of the Brothers of The Serpent.
The Domain desires that all IS-BEs of Earth will eventually be recovered to their natural spiritual state of independence, power, and immortality, as embodied in the Eternally Benevolent Domain, by the principle of "All-Mother", and in the entity of "The Omniscient and Omnipotent Matriarch".
The content of this audiobook is a mission debrief received from Matilda MacElroy, who is now a member of the DEF Rescue Mission, stationed in the asteroid belt surrounding Earth.

    Mind boggling
This book gave rise to many many questions. But it seems to hold an ever present truth that permeates this reality.
Like North Korea from Outer Space . . .
The narrator is fantastic - a lovely voice. Unfortunately, the narrative has a lot of repetition from the previous book. The entire book's format is presented as a debriefing of an entity who managed to escape a long term trap, thus the story line is very heavy on information in the format of indoctrination. I ended up having to relisten to the back end of the book a couple of times since I either fell asleep or started to daydream about other things.
What I couldn't decide was if this book was most heavy on bureaucracy, military, religion, or intelligence propaganda. The syrupy references to their far away ("benevolent") leader and their ("superior") organizational system reminded me of how people of North Korea speak of their leader and country, always heavy on the loving praise - as if their very existence depends on correct and expected devotion and praise.
The disdain for the "undesirables" inhabiting human bodies and disregard for Earth is creepy. The message is that pretty much anyone on Earth wasn't wanted in the rest of the Universe and were dumped because they were either criminals or non-conformists and free-thinkers. The disparaging attitude toward inhabitants of this "Prison Planet" is similar to the attitude toward natives when North America was first explored, had missionaries and soldiers come in, then settlers take over.
This could be an entertaining few hours if you imagine you are in a classroom with the narrator in some uniform with a long wooden pointer, telling you what the history of the situation is, what the current situation is, what is correct to believe, what is planned, and how wonderful their side is (even though they can't figure out how to fix things and plan on leaving their workers trapped, have no regard for current occupants of Earth - unless some want to join them - and no regard for Earth - except for possible use in their invasion of more distant sites.)
The undercurrent threading throughout is set to appeal for people who want to think of themselves as "special" and want to identify themselves as one of the missing and trapped entities.

    Great book
Awesome book, love the writer.. completed a set of 3.. I was missing the 2nd book.. wish she had went farther with the series..
    The Good Old Days...
When men were men, women were women and bar fights were bar fights. Officers Glyndower and O'Bannion, Solar Police, are sent out to the Outer Belt, a ring of asteroids beyond Jupiter, to investigate the fact that more than the normal number of ships have been disappearing. Now, mining asteroids and normal space travel is dangerous to begin with. Yet the number of disppearances have gotten too high to ignore. So now the two officers must find out the truth behind all the ships gone missing. And what they find is NOT just a case of aggressive claim jumpers or piracy.
This book is the second one in the series and, like the first, has great character development, a good plot and a great hard sci-fi setting. Also lots of action, humor and a cool battle in the last few chapters.
    Four Stars
Not based on redlettermedia's rich Evans
    Rounding up Intergalactic Trash!!!!

    Fun read, somewhat predictable
Most of the book was engaging and fun, but the ending felt unrealistic. Recommended for fans of military science fiction.
    Scotty Strikes Again
Grand Story and a great Narrator. I did not know the late mister Doohan was so good a writer. But he along with mister Stirling have crafted a story you just have to keep listening to, But at 03:36 in the morning. I had to get some sleep
I will be getting the next books when I can afford them but wish I could buy the rest out right.
To make a good audio book you need 2 things. A good story and an great Narrator. The one has BOTH.
If you like the space action mixed with a good spy story. This books for you.

Where we're going, McFly, we WILL need roads!
This review will be brief and to the point, Audible listener.
Time travel novels are tricky, to say the very least.
As an author, you'll be tempted to over-create a plausible detailed science behind the concept of your story, and that can kill any hope of a great novel. Often, you'll dive far too deeply into HOW time paradoxes work, and the twisted aftershocks that change the future, causing your readers to quickly use your novel for kindling. Sometimes, you'll want to spit out a gargantuan litany of historical facts and figures, subsequently drown your audience in minutia, which makes for an utter snoozefest, and your book winds up in the 70% off bargain bin.
    None of that happens here.
Buckle in. This is what time travel should be. Plots, Fixing the time paradox back to right. Action. Good, old fashioned Indiana Jones style storytelling! And this isn't dramatic imagineering of a future world, as much as a detailed reflection of the PAST, which is always refreshing, when done with expertise and solid period creation.
And it works. The storyline is deep and thought-provoking. The characters, both good and evil, and enjoyable. And the narrator did a good job as well.
This all comes together for an excellent listen in the time travel genre. To think that I almost didn't get this one, just because of the horrific artwork on the cover of this Audible offering. It really could and should, be much better.
Don't pass on this one. It's a keeper.
    One Excellent Story
I had been holding out on purchasing a second hand copy of this book. Then I came actoss the audible version and purchased it instead.
Listening to this version really helpef to pass the time while waiting in line at the bank, the phone company and while cleaning around my place.
This was hands down a great story from beginning to end. Don't want to give away too much, my best advice would be to either finf a copy of The Proteus Operation or download the audio version and prepare to be amazed.
    time travel that doesn't work
I like the idea, and I like elements of the story, but it is so poorly written that I had trouble with it. Especially after having just come from To Say Nothing of the Dog, which is so well written.
And the narrator doesn't do well, mispronouncing words, altering his pronunciation of the same word later; not doing voices well at all, not even trying to give Churchill a distinct voice and yet oddly enough trying to do it for Einstein.
Aside from that, I didn't believe in the world at all. & here's why. If you compare To Say Nothing wherein the research into the period is so well done but also the characters are living in that world...But in this one, there are times when the description feels like, "oh, yeah, I need to describe that time period, so let me list elements in this picture I'm looking at". The characters don't really interact with the environment in a way that makes you believe in it.
I really was hoping it would be good with the SF & Time Travel & WWII.

Brilliance audio has made a significant error with this MP3 disc. It is labelled correctly however, the content is by another author and the performer is another person.I have returned 4 of these discs to date. The last time I was told by Amazon and Brilliance to wait 7 or 8 days and re-order. I did this and the irony is they sent me back one of the discs that I had returned. when I initially ordered this audiobook I marked the case to keep track of the order to listen in. They even put a sticker on the case indicating that it had been inspected! Certainly not for accuracy!
    An Interesting Future
The book embodies two interesting concepts: the Jews have been driven not only from Israel but from Earth by the Islamic empire (aka caliphate); and the protagonist, with an extended family of well known and highly regard military members and has just graduated from boot camp, sees himself as a coward ... even before he enters combat for the first time. The author lays the basis for a very interesting multi-volume future.
I like all of Joel Rosenberg's book
I like all of Joel Rosenberg's book, so dig into them even if it isn't a rainy day to read!

What if there was a secret city at work on finding answers to the survival of humanity? Technologies beyond your imagination. A city expanding, recruiting, and evolving. There is no government, no money, no bosses, institutions, cars, or roads; and age takes on new meaning. This "facity" is one big research product in and of itself, and nothing else quite like it exists on this Earth.
This is the city that Erwin Sharp and his family are drawn into on the fringes of a national park. They fall headfirst down the rabbit hole into a world of space probes, cancer cures, and a core myth that defies belief. They soon realize that some doors are only meant to swing one way. This is a parable of trust and hope - a flashing beacon of hope in a world hell-bent on destroying itself. It is ultimately a story of ambition, of owning up to life, showing up and trading up. In a story that is as controversial as it is reassuring, sometimes it is possible to find something you always hoped existed, and in finding it, you confront our own truth as much as that of the world you live in.
What is inside the mysterious Hall 8, and what does that have to do with Erwin? And how is water the mechanism of peace or destruction? Thick with adventure, revelations and twists, this story shows how what we accept is only that which we've been conditioned to accept, and why an ancient Mayan prophesy doesnt actually mean what you think.
