Hauntingly Beautiful Tale From A Master Of His Craft
Sarban presents us with a vision that is both uncompromising and visceral. Unlike a large majority of less potent works, he does not deign to rationalize or explain the groundings of his tale. Like a unicorn grazing in a pasture, it simply exists, unable to be denied. This tale has a logic all its own and as Sarban says, Querdilion is not only an outlaw from man's laws (the laws created by the Nazi Germany he is trapped in), he is also an outlaw from the laws of Nature. As such, no reason should be given for his transportation to and from this nightmare realm. To give a reason would be contradicting Sarban's initial premise that Querdillon is an outlaw of Nature's laws for reason is a law which Nature follows. It is not a law of Hackelnberg. Madness is. Human beings stripped of all that can be called human, reduced to the most animalistic state imaginable captures this madness beautifully and Sarban's most powerful prose centers on this theme. Yet. There is another law, perhaps one that cuts across reality, which gives this tale its unique power and mystery. Kit and Alan. Trapped in a nightmare, somehow they manage to find a love that is pure and pristine, untouched by the Count, untouched even by death. As the Count stares across the Bohlen ray fence at Alan at the end of the novel, one has the sense that there are some laws which are beyond man, some powers which are beyond the control of even the most brutal potentate. Love is definitely a necessary part of this power, but to say that love is this power would perhaps oversimplify Sarban's complex and achingly beautiful tale. No, it is something else, something ineffable, that same something which transported Alan to Hackelenberg and back to WWII Nazi Germany. Something that haunts him even as he tells the tale. Something that touches him to the core as he says that he "learned for the first time how such a loss uproots all other agonies from the soul and makes of the heart a desert where fear and pain can never grow again." And it is that something, that force which draws the reader time and again to this beautiful, mysterious piece of prose.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Jorgmund Pipe is the backbone of the world, and it's on fire. Gonzo Lubitsch, professional hero and troubleshooter, is hired to put it out - but there's more to the fire than meets the eye. A story of love and loss; of ninjas and pirates; and of a friendship stretched beyond its limits. But it is also the story of a world, not unlike our own, in desperate need of heroes - however unlikely they may seem.
    Critic Reviews:
"Breathtakingly ambitious... A bubbling cosmic stew of a book, written with such exuberant imagination that you are left breathless by its sheer ingenuity." (Observer)
"A post-apocalyptic triumph... Immensely rewarding... Genuinely terrifying." (The Times)

    Weird
Where does The Gone-Away World rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Somewhere around the bottom of the top ten?
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Gone-Away World?
The moment I started to twig that there is something crucial I didn't know about the main character. Yes, it took me a while.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
    Anything with Master Wu
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It gave me an actual nightmare, and I dont really get nightmares. It got under my skin that much. But it was still so good I would recommend it to everyone (so you can all suffer as I did).
    Any additional comments?
The author is clearly a slightly mad creative genius. It's almost impossible to describe this book. It's a dystopian sci-fi horror comedy romance psychological fantasy thriller.
The book is soo brilliant, if you are hesitating to pick it up because you think think it might not be your thing don't worry, it's nobody's thing because the author has invented a whole new thing. It's a book that has stuck with me. Every one of the characters is wonderfully unique and multifaceted, just as everyone really is. At points you will hate each one, love each one, cry for them, laugh with them and be surprised by them.
    Loved it.
Take a walk on the... well... almost every side
What made the experience of listening to The Gone-Away World the most enjoyable?
In some books it's like walking into a room that the author has furnished for you and the story. In this case it's like the author has created a whole village for you, complete with fitness studio, public library, and schools at every level. The author takes you on a tour of the village, sometimes doubling back on his tracks to show you something you would have missed the first time. Absolutely delightful.
What did you like best about this story?
If I were to reveal what I liked best then I would be revealing too much about the story and spoil some of it for later readers.
Which character as performed by Matt Bates was your favourite?
The narator's characterisations were wonderful and so several characters spring to mind as a possible favourite. I would plump for Ronnie Chung.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
The impossible film about a possible world with impossible bombs.
    Any additional comments?
A book to tickle your brain parts, waking them up and making them giggle with delight. Read by a splendidly versatile Matt Bates much better than a film and with the large array of characters much easier to follow than reading it yourself.
    Brilliant
This book (all 22hrs of it) went faster than most of my 10 hr reads.

Really Good Story and Concept, But a Little Rushed
I really liked this entire story, the concept, and the interesting universe that the story takes place in. However, I did feel like the writing style of the author was a little rushed. This could have easily been two books with more back story, detail, and plot.
In the story, humanity has split into a handful different empires and minor powers. Humanity in general is plagued by a corrupt and emotionless alien race bent on galactic domination. The main character is a captain of a ship in one of the more powerful navies. When his home world falls, he an his crew find themselves refugees having to fend for themselves. Eventually, they end up gathering a group of other refugees and some ships, making a small nation of their own. Down the line, they join forces with some mercenaries to recapture the system they originally took refuge in (which had been recently captured by the same alien race that captured the main character's home world) so that they can locate and reclaim the remnants of a legendary, and very powerful, lost fleet of ships. Along the way, they catch wind of another race of aliens that may pose a much greater threat to the human race then anything they have encountered before.
Overall, I loved the whole storyline and concept of the book, but there were many places where the book seemed a bit rushed. For example:
"It was then that the other captain invited me aboard his ship. I was on the other ship when I noticed..." (I just made that up, but I think you get the point)
It seemed to jump from one situation to the next with too little back story, detail, or an appropriate lead-in to the next situation.
Having said that, I enjoyed the book very much and am looking forward to the next in the series.
Both author and narrator need seasoning
Would you try another book from Kal Spriggs and/or Jonathan Waters?
    Doubtful but perhaps
Would you be willing to try another book from Kal Spriggs? Why or why not?
This book was clearly a freshman attempt. It had some good story and plot points, but he really needs to refine his craft.
How could the performance have been better?
It didn't sound like the narrator had much experience. He talked too fast, slurred words and mispronounced words because he hurried. He also needs work on his character voices and accents.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No.
    Awaiting the next in series
Heroes and heroines bet all odds and win. Fast moving space ship survival that does not get mired down in dark brutality. Their is a way to win using courage, brains, morals, loyalty, and forgiveness. With no small amount of luck.

This is an optimistic look at the future, but ...
    bad things are coming.
It is the first book in the series. Without the series finished, it can be frustrating to read the book and then have to wait "who knows how long?" for the series to be finished. The characters and the created near-term earth world were well done.
I guess I will have to wait for the next book in the series.
    Enjoyable Listen and Read
Enjoyed the book a lot. The author does a great job showing how and alien machine and AI might work. He creates a great alliance between man and machine. Thought the voice acting on this one was great. Very enjoyable.
Smart story, really got me thinking
Smart story, really got me thinking. We'll thought out technology and amazing description.
Thought the narration here was also spot on and engaging. Great listen!
    Most boring book ever
The whole book reads like this: this happened and then that happened and then this happened and this was big and this was small and that happened and it goes on and on. Zero character development. I still don't know what the plot is. I am a little over halfway through. And I cannot believe I even went that far. I am done.
Don't waste your time till part 2 comes out
What would have made The Pattern Ship better?
Waste of time if part 2 isn't available.
What did you like best about this story?
good start but ... what happens next?
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Felt stiffed as time went on and no part 2

Its inhabitants ranged from Dr. Alimantando, the towns founder and resident genius, to the Babooshka, a barren grandmother who just wants her own child grown in a fruit jar; from Rajendra Das, mechanical hobo who has a mystical way with machines to the Gallacelli brothers, identical triplets who fell in love with and married the same woman.

    STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL...
My biggest regret is that I'll never be able to read this book for the first time again. This book has it all world development, great characters ,more than a dash of magic realism . It engages the reader from the first page to the last. I am retired, and have read more than a few books, this book would be in my top ten desert island book list. Now to choose my next book by the inestimable Ian McDonald.
(and look for the occasional green person).T
his book is recommended for the reader of any genre who is looking for a fascinating piece of literature.
Bought this book as used paperback decades ago and loved it. I've re-read this many times
Bought this book as used paperback decades ago and loved it. I've re-read this many times, picking up new things each time I go through it. It's complex and deep, but an easy and fun read. It's definitely a weird perspective, so I understand those who don't find it appealing. But even though I'm mostly a fan of hard science fiction, I found this mix of SF/fantasy to be just right. Haven't ever read anything else like it. I'm an engineer and my wife is a English major, and we both loved it.
    Desolation Road
The book is cleverly conceived and well written. The heroine is a colorful sc-fi character, and through her we get an intriguing picture of the planet Mars as a colony world, with its magical and sometimes mystical allusions to multi-dimensional space-time.The 'created' society, is part of an amazingly detailed future. McDonald has written other books which are 'must reads' for a sc-fi buff.
    Epic Opera
    Spellbinding!
Set in the far future after man and AI-kind have settled Mars, this is the story of a nowhere place called Desolation Road, a town started by one man, where nothing existed before, and nothing was EVER supposed to exist. Yet, as the city grows in size, the story grows in scope, to cover generations of the original inhabitants and their ancestors. Life, death, birth, war, deception, betrayal, religion, sex and love...
For lovers of cyberpunk, biopunk, and space opera.
Best surrealistic science/fantasy books you can read
McDonald achieves a perfect blend of science fiction and fantasy story telling, moving seamlessly between the two to weave an amazing story tapestry. Loved this book as a teenager, still love it as an adult. A fantastic read best described as providing the question to the answer 42.

We used to believe that mankind contaminated the Earth through our use of oil, coal and other non-biodegradable consumables and pollutants. We never once considered that the planet might one day contaminate us. But that's what happened.
Over a year has passed since an ancient gas started seeping from every surface of the planet. Nine out of every ten humans have since transformed into walking dead creatures with an insatiable hunger for human brains and flesh. We, the survivors, are now food for the afflicted and we are vastly outnumbered.
