Great performance, decent story

This book makes for a good transition between some of the earlier tales of the Bishop's (and humanity's) struggles for survival and the conclusion of this series in the next book. The story itself is enjoyable but perhaps not as strong as some of the other books in the series. With that said, it does a good job of setting up what is likely to be an epic conclusion.

Filler

So far these books have left me with the impression of " let me make a short story long". The author has a great story line but makes it nearly unbearable. It seems like he must of outlined a basic storyline then thought"how many pages do I need" and then proceeds with putting monotonous adjectives as filler. Really got tiring and almost made me stop if not for the overall storyline.

Narrator Fleet Cooper's performance is measured and thoughtful, and, as researchers from the Center for Disease Control attempt to transport the reluctant Mr. Lampert to California, Cooper gives each character such a distinct voice that listeners will almost believe that an entire cast of actors is performing.

The Teresa Character was garbage. This book just seemed very schizophrenic/manic to me just jumping from one thing to another without really binding any of them together. The Characters never really developed or changed.

Simon Vance makes this novel shine

If you haven't listened to a book narrated by Simon Vance this is a great opportunity. He is a king among narrators, and you have to hear him at least once.

The novel itself is fairly fast paced thriller that highlights the consequences of human interference in the wider galaxy. Set in a future dystopia where technological singularity has occurred, the cast of characters live under the ever present scrutiny of AI's who's intentions are unknown. The AI's have their own agenda's and humanity has seemingly become their puppets.

My only complaint is that this is the first in a series of novels, and the others are not on Audible. However, the novel is modular and the ending wraps up nicely, so it's not like your facing a cliff hanger.

Well-crafted language, and great narration, but...

Wonderful narration, and the writing is good, but the story is really confusing. I didn't even bother to finish. It got off to such a promising start, but quickly became obscure. The characterizations are weak. There are a fair number of protagonists, but who, exactly, are they? If I have to wait until the end to find out, that's too long for me.

Kind of blah

OK, I will start with a disclaimer: I have never read/listened to any of the other works in Saberhagen's Berserker series, which are supposed to be excellent sci-fi. From what I can tell, this is a prequel to most of the other Berserker books and familiarity with the other stories isn't essential to understanding the book....although it might enhance your enjoyment of the book. I wasn't familiar with the others and I didn't particularly enjoy it.

Berserker Prime is best described as an instance of space opera, with the usual trappings: noble, larger-than-life heroes....an implacable, hard to defeat robotic enemy...the obligatory young lovers unjustly separated...the triumph of human spirit over the evils of the universe. Unfortunately, it was not particularly well-written space opera, the ending could be seen a mile off and, after a while, completing it just became an exercise in plodding along.

I generally like Paul Michael Garcia's readings in shorter works, but this is the first time I've encountered a full novel narrated by him. I think he did a pretty good job, but his reading was generally somewhat bland. Also, there were a few audio glitches which were irritating but not disastrous.

Thrilling-3 cheers for Alan Dean Foster

I am new to downloading audio but I've been listening to audiobooks from back when they were on tape. This book translates very well into audio. For the most part first person viewpoint. Vivid detail, nail biting adventure, romance (just enough to make it believable that the protagonist would go to the ends of the Earth to accomplish his goal), a bit of humor and room for many,many sequels. Did I mention how much I enjoyed the narration? Ben Browder does a wide range of voices but even better he creates that special character to listener bond. Hope he continues to do audio work

Great build up

I'd read the book and was initially disappointed with the narrator. He seemed to be too understated, but as time went on, the pace of the story increased and the intensity of the narration kept pace with this. He also dealt well with non-American accents - notoriously difficult.

VERBOSE

The story has a good premis and the reader does a fair job. But it is extreemly obvious that the author was paid by the word for this story. He repeats the same things over and over and over and over again. I fast forwarded for several minutes, multiple times, and did not miss the story line. This is one story where the abridged version would have been better.

Fast-paced Sci-Fi Entertainment

I am an Alan Dean Foster fan, and now a Ben Browder fan. I've enjoyed Browder on Farscape and Stargage SG-1, but his reading of this very entertaining novel made me appreciate how vast his acting talents are.

Interlopers Ordained

Very orginal story... but I kept having the feeling that I'd heard it before. Then I ralized...I hadn't heard it before, we live it everyday. I think I know who the Interlopers are.

Interlopers appears to be a metaphor for a real world entity.

A Wrenching, Challenging, Thought-Provoking Wonder

This is a one-of-a-kind gem I can't recommend highly enough. Surely it's one of dystopian science fiction's best-kept secrets. Imagine an isolated island preserved from world plague by its remote location. Now imagine the inhabitants creating a community based on Plato's REPUBLIC.

What does it mean to be alive? To be an individual? To be a member of a community? To be responsible? Whatever you expect this book will be, it will surprise you. I've listened to this more than once, and yet the twist ending never fails to take my breath away.

Don't be fooled if you see this referred to as a "young adult" novel; it's a perfect listen for thoughtful adults, as well.

You have to be in the right mood for this one

The frame (Anax taking her 5-hr exam) is a device for the story she tells about Adam Ford and an AI. Yes, tells--not a lot of showing. And even the story she tells isn't much of one. Basically this book is about philosophical questions, such as "What is consciousness?"

Because there isn't a lot of "showing," and there's not a lot of fluff; it's not something you can listen to with half an ear.

I did find it interesting, but it was (in part) my mood. I had just finished reading something from the '40s, which was also quite philosophical and not exactly action-packed.

As far as the twist, halfway though I had most of it figured out, though it didn't spoil the book for me because I was interested in the questions the book was posing.

A Nightmare Unfulfilled

Oppegaard's well-developed characters survive a nightmarish journey across a desolate landscape only to find there are no answers to their questions about WHY the Despair has taken their loved-ones' lives and, weirdly enough, their bodies. What did the mysterious "Source" want with bodies and the destruction of mankind? Our protagonists never find out, and neither will you, the listener.

Has Seppuku (Suicide by disembowelment)

The Suicide Collectors is like a mix between The Road and Earth Abides. A plague of depression called the Despair, threatens to end mankind by its own hand. This is a great book and a really easy listen, the narrator does well making the main guy Norman sound the part of a man fighting despair. The two other reviewers dislike the ending, but it was well done and left you to make your own guesses and a since of hope. This is well worth a credit and a great listen for any one who likes Post-apocalyptic books.

Disappointing

I enjoyed the book up until I was 3/4ths the way done. The ending was extremely disappointing. I wanted answers, but found none. When you put time and belief in characters, you want an ending that won't make you scratch your head and go "Huh?" Don't waste your time or credits.

Not bad, not my usual genre but I was entertained

This series is a fairly interesting listen. The narrator has depth and breadth. Meaning that the characters voices are both well differentiated and well suited to each character. The story itself is complex enough to keep you interested without becoming so entangled that you lose track of the stories events. The villains are hate able with just enough of like-ability to keep them from becoming caricatures. The hero is likable but dislikable enough to prevent him from becoming another over grown boy scout. The world(s) are fully fleshed and believable. The prose itself is not exactly Shakespeare but it is adequate enough for the story. Overall I enjoyed the story but was not overwhelmed with enthusiasm, but this is not my usual genre so that actually might be a ringing endorsement of how good the book is. Overall I recommend it.

Solid

I enjoyed Buried Deep more than the other RA books (which I also enjoyed). I was pleased that Paloma was equally, if not more, enjoyable...maybe interesting is a better choice. Definitely maintaining my interest and I look forward to grabbing the next.

Very thorough thought put into every book

Since the first book in the retrieval artist series (The Disappeared), I was impressed by the thoroughness of the plot line. The technical aspects of a moon based dome life, as well as on other planets are very well thought out. Then there are the aliens, of which the author has done well to go outside the cliche format of humanoids only, and provided serious thought to the impact of how these would behave based on her predetermined definitions. I applaud the thoroughness of the series as a whole.

Running out of steam?

Ms. Rusch, while a good writer, seems to be running out of steam here with this 5th installment of the series. Too many contrived and complicated plot twists.

Jay Snyder's outstanding performance can't salvage this one.

Disappointing. What went wrong with this one?

I've read several in this series and have enjoyed them (in spite of the reader, who seems to be trying to read for hearing-impaired elementary school students... or maybe to win a "read like a computer" contest.) The writing and the stories were strong enough to overcome.

But in this volume, the writing deteriorated almost to the level of the reading. Different editor? Characters periodically think and say things that are out of character. Awkward word choices and phrases occur with annoying frequency ("past history," "too many ethics," "clear" where "transparent" would be more precise and in-character, elevator "went down" rather than "descended," and a lawyer is frequently described by multiple characters as "good" when what he is is a highly skilled scoundrel... not "good.")

I don't remember noticing these kinds of idiosyncrasies in the previous volumes, so I'm others in the series will prove to be of higher quality when I get around to reading them.

3.5 stars is what this means

These are detective stories in space. No great strain on the brain matter and some gaping holes in the plot. I felt that I made a mistake buying the entire set after the first one thinking that the author was going to build on that story. She didn't really, The characters continue on with a series of detective stories that are not especially thrilling. I listened to them all and cannot say that I was inspired, but I enjoyed them for what they were, fairly bland.
