Best in the series

Ms. Rusch's 4th effort, and as with book 3, we finally get to see some of what Flint's new career is all about.

The plot works better than any of the previous 3, definitely the best in the series.

Jay Snyder once again delivers an out-of-this-world performance.

Good book from a good series

I've heard all the Retrieval Artist books and enjoyed them. They are just a solid, enjoyable listen for me.

In this book I really liked getting so in close with the Disti(aliens). I felt like we got to know them much better as a people than has previously been the case for other aliens.

This one also had some added spice in how the story followed numerous characters' points of view consistently through the book rather than mostly sticking to the 2-3 mains.

The best so far

Good action, good suspense. Learned more about the alien Disti(?) and their rites. Enjoyed the interplay between protagonists.

Better than usual.

I enjoy the RA books, but don't think of them as particularly special. Certainly fine entertainment with interesting enough ideas. However, this one seemed to push a bit out of the normal comfort zone, and I enjoyed it more.

To much politics

Jay Snyder turns in another great performance; to bad the story is not up to snuff.

This story took the politics to far, I seriously lost interest in this story many times. I feel like there is very little action and entirely to much explanation and whining. This is not why I have been reading these books.

I will now be taking a break from reading the Retrieval Artist series for awhile, it looks like the next book in the series may have more action and less politics so I will eventually listen to/read it, but it wont be anytime soon.

More is Always Better for the BSG Fan

The Cylons' Secret set between the first and second Cylon Wars is an interesting story for the BSG Fan. With elements taken from the re-imagined series as well as the short lived Caprica series it tells of a young Adama and Zerek and the Cylons' quest to survive. Excellent stand alone story. Jonathan Davis delivers another awesome narration.

LUVED the TV series, BUT this isn't worth the time

I LUVED the TV series... had to get this one. it's blah... not worth the time.

An superb story. and excellent performance.

While it does deviate from some story elements from the show aswell as blood and chrome, i find it could fit in the continuity of the main story. Even as a stand alone Cylons secret was a great and fun read. Jonathan Davis was as always a superb narrator. Any one looking for a taste of BSG or any die hard fan would enjoy this book.

Not what I expected

I thought this would be like the TV series. Also I expected this to follow the Battlestar Galactica book I purchased. Very disappointed.

not worth the time

Its funny, you think that as with Trek, they could get some decent media related books. Some decent back story but lame story and they forced the series into the book. ( No hint of the five or the how they wraped up the series)

Mystery / suspense, not a man vs machine story

I had to give this book a lower rating than the other Berserker books because it isnt really a Berserker story. This is a mystery / surprise ending type story. Theres little mention of the Berserker machines other than the ones that are involved in the story as characters. There are no great battles with the machines and the entire story is within the Templar Radiant, which is a man made world if it can be called that, made mostly of metal.

This book had nothing to do with the overall battle against the machines but it did focus somewhat on how some humans will do anything for power including siding with the machines.

If you like murder and mystery novels you will really enjoy this. If youre expecting a great Berserker story Id suggest skipping this one.

The best part of this book was the in-depth description of the Templar Radiant

The other Berserker stories took you all over the universe and gave you a feeling of massive space and massive machines. This book gave me a feeling of confined space and I was waiting for the Berserkers to just kill everyone and bring excitement to the story.

Of all the Berserker books Id rate this my least favorite. BERSERKER MAN was by far the greatest of them all. I HIGHLY recommend you download BERSERKERS THE BEGINNING which is a series of collected mini stories.

A pleasant listen from a great writter

Because this is a shorter work, I don't want to detail too much beyond what the description has already said for fear of ruining it for some people. We join Francis, a journalist, as as she is visiting Lohno for an extended series of interview about his life's work. The area is about to be overrun by an invading army and the action proceeds from there as she and Lohno's servant flee.

The settings are vivid. Francis is an interesting narrator. There's a lot to like here and nothing really to complain about.

I've been a fan of Tanith Lee since 1980 or thereabouts. She is a prolific writer and her books span the spectrum from great to poor. This story is good, maybe very good, but far from her best. I've still listened to it multiple times and I still find in interesting. For the price, give it a shot.

Enjoyable, very well narrated post-cyberpunk piece

This, like Gibson's Pattern recognition is really a post-cyberpunk work and I think that might have turned some people off _ I personally was not turned off.

Styling :

I find this a natural extension of the earlier styling (where they may have explored the "near-future flawed or maybe corrupt", the post movement has shades of the "present inane")

"Edgy" has gone maybe a little "sardonic"

The buzzwords were, I feel, appropriately (over)used as THAT itself was part of the ccultural commentary

I found the atmosphere witty, dryly humorous and entertaining

Story :

Like Much of sci-fi (esp in the longform) the concept/theme of the stoy and the construction of the world can be less-than-perfectly integrated (hey, I find this even among the old gaurd masters of the genre)

It does seem to read like 2 different stories and takes a left turn maybe 70% through...and the reader has to shift gears with it

Admittedly, that transition is a little rough and maybe a little muddled (though maybe that was something we were supposed to feel...uprooted) -- not entirely smooth, but didn't trash the work by any means and certainly isn't the worst example of that by any means

Narration :

Extremely impressive, the narrator gives a different voice to the characters making it easy to follow and more of a performance, WITHOUT putting the characterizations on heavily enough to become tedious or overly apparent (I just heard it as different voices and it helped immersion into the story making the narration yet smoother).

I honestly feel one of the better readers I've heard just about anywhere

It's actually one I can go back and enjoy again

So my opinion differs from some of the other listeners

interesting near future history

This book is another good one by Bruce Sterling. He takes a more moderated tack to the practice of cyber-punk fiction, which he famously pioneered in co-authored books with William Gibson. Sterling here provides a pretty fun and interesting sort of international intrigue with a great protagonist and lots of good sociological speculation. All of his books are provocative and thoughtful science fiction on the cutting edge.

Buzzwords galore

This book does its own literary criticsm, which would be interesting if the work actually rated literary criticism. Instead, _Zeitgeist_ stumbles under the weight poor storytelling and dozens upon dozens of buzzwords from modern philosophy and Internet-bubble technology.

Zeitgeist

In a nutshell, The "Emperor's New Book." Dark and unappealing. No real plot. One of the few books from Audible that I thought was a waste of time.

Not a lot of tension or action. Very young adult whiny romance novelly with a few zombies in the background. Not for me.

What did you like best about Out Of Darkness? What did you like least?

I have mixed emotions about this book. I enjoyed the story immensely but I did not like any of the characters. Usually when I read a book I grow to love the characters but unfortunately not in this case. Hopefully, there will be more character development to come. The story however was not bad. In fact it was quite interesting. What a great idea to have humans with super powers, that descended from aliens to take on the zombies!!!

Best ever

Without a doubt this is one of the best written SciFy books of this decade. The author does a superb job of developing the characters, making the reader feel part of the action, and presenting a thoroughly detailed scenario that makes the book one you can't stop listening to.

Getting Better

Much the same as the rest of the series. I think he is getting a little better at building characters, but I still find myself not caring about the characters and what happens. But it is good simple no frills entertainment. He doesn't burden the story with political undertones, or scientific plausibility, both of which can be dreary. It isn't great, but it isn't bad.
