I had saw this book some time ago but never got round to buying it , thought id give it a try via audio book and wasn't disappointed. Great story. And Gemma Whelan , aka yara greyjoy - game of thrones delivers an exceptional performance

The book started with promise, only the blatant "product placement" began to irritate me. (I only want to know it was a torch - not which make of torch!) Then it was some basic lack in some research. I am sure all the knowledge of Hungarian folklore and the places described were accurate but some research on basic anatomy would have been helpful. Maybe I am nit-picking but things I know about have to be accurate for me, or I turn off! Someone with a bare knowledge of First Aid cannot set up an IV into a vein! You cannot plunge a syringe into a bicep and get back blood! These seemed such incongruous inaccuracies that I began to wonder how much of the whole background research was actually based on fact. I do not really know why I kept listening but the idea of the story intrigued me, and I like books that flip back and forward to different times. However, it just got more and more long winded, spending agonising minutes on descriptions of the main characters feelings that went on and on, all about the same thing. In the end, I fast forwarded most of the second part, and still managed to follow the plot. The ending was disappointing, and a little ridiculous. It's a book I will be deleting, and I am sorry, but won't be looking out for this author again. The only thing that kept me reading was the reader, who coped with accents and pronunciations very well.

The String Diaries is an intriguing book and very well ready. I loved the part set in the past. The disappointment for me was the end! Way to predictable, I thing Stephen Lloyd Jones ran out of ideas.....shame but still an enjoyable listen.

fabulous book do not miss this one.

This is a fab book, it is captivating to the end and the story line is superb. I could not stop listening to it and was upset when it finished.

A Self-Gifting Story

If you donât like cold, winter sunny mornings. And if you donât like heroes who smoke a lot. You know: âsmoking killsâ. Then, maybe, this short novel is not for you. On the other hand, if you want to see Islamic killers bettered at their murderous ways by Americans whose use of force against them is guided by powerful thinking skills: then maybe this is a book for you. And then thereâs one heroic character in the story who smokes something like three packs of cigarettes in one hour â to save his life. In here is one of the funniest two paragraphs Iâve read in literature. It has to do with a comparison of Arab culture to our old feuding American hill people, the Hatfields and the McCoys.

Even more relevant today

I was excited to find a suspense novel written by Edward Cline available for Kindle. I was delighted upon reading We Three Kings to find that it lives up to my high expectations of the author of the outstanding historical fiction series Sparrowhawk, which brings to life the events leading up to the American Revolution.

Edward Cline proves once again that he has the imagination and ingenuity to create heroes. Merritt Fury is an entrepreneur who steadfastly defends his moral ideas and principles with ability, integrity and courage in the face of the gravest of dangers.

The story takes place during the Christmas season, a time of gift-giving and benevolence, but when Fury steps in to aid the victim of a fierce attack by a Saudi sheik's thugs, he finds himself face to face with malevolence and becomes enmeshed in a chilling clash of cultures and values. He and his sole ally, a police detective, become all too aware of the entrenched pragmatism within the departments of government entrusted with protecting their rights. They are left on their own and often hindered in their life and death struggles.

Looking for a great summer read?

If you are, like me, on the lookout for a fresh voice in the thriller genre, clear out your schedule for a few days and pick up a copy of Jim Satterfield's Saving Laura. Set in Wyoming and Colorado--a region Satterfield knows like his backyard--Saving Laura is the tale of a young man willing to risk everything to save the girl he loves from an unscrupulous drug dealer. It is a common theme, yes, but Satterfield does it with uncommon style: in the smooth and easy prose that flows like the waters of the Roaring Fork River, in the characters as real as the Rockies themselves, and in the use of the setting--described beautifully--as a character unto itself. So well does Satterfield know the terrain and understand its denizens, that the reader is much like a movie-goer, watching the story unfold amid the snow-tinged peaks and aspen-covered hills.

But there is more to Saving Laura than beautiful scenery, much more. In classic thriller fashion, there is never really any doubt as to how the story will end, but it is the getting there that drives the story, the reader's desire to see how it all goes down. It is a testament to Satterfield's ability to create sympathetic characters that we yearn to see the protagonist (twenty-one-year-old Lee Shelby) succeed despite watching him commit grand larceny in the opening scene. We allow it because we understand Shelby is desperate to save Laura from cocaine addiction and from the man who enabled her addiction, an easy-to-hate drug peddler that Satterfield draws up in grand fashion.

But the author's talent for characterization is perhaps best seen in the many supporting characters: in the renegade mountain dweller who helps Shelby escape from the police who are looking for him for a murder he didn't commit; in the beautiful and flawed Laura for whom Shelby is willing to risk his life; and in the maverick author (a doppleganger of Satterfield himself?) who comes to Shelby's aid when he needs it most.

So, pull up a beach chair, brew up a large pitcher of iced tea or mix a Tanqueray and Tonic (don't forget the lime so you can count it as a fruit serving), and crack open a copy of Saving Laura by Jim Satterfield.

Light relief

Quite a gentle police story, set in the 50s (I think). Dated - but quite acceptable as light relief from heavier, more tense novels.

Quite amusing to hear some of the early language and clipped tones of the middle class characters.

Would you listen to The Devil and the River again? Why?

I never thought I would say this, but, yes! Emphatically, yes! It took a while to get me 'hooked' this time. I'm an Aussie and the southern USA slow speech, and slow thinking got in my way to start but Ellory soon hooked me with his superb prose and I continued listening just to take pleasure alone in this; soon I was engrossed in this unusual murder mystery which was really a saga about a small town and a wealthy southern family with a secret that they never wanted to be known. The story meandered like the great Missisippi itself backwards and forwards allover the place and every time revealing another piece of the puzzle our protagonist was attempting to unveil. He had a story too, and as the mystery unfolded so did Deputy Sherrif Gaines story too. The book has many layers, the murder plot, and the intricacies of the lives this murder touched. I devoured this reading quickly and will read again just to savour once more the excellent prose of the author, RJ Ellory, who is fast becoming my favourite.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The protagonist, Sherrif Gaines. A complex character in his own right; looking for direction and meaning in his life and finding it, as the book unfolds.

What about Eric Meyers and Laurence Bouvard s performance did you like?

I must admit, that I was not aware there were two performers. For me it was seamless and the voices excellent, for the most part.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did have an extreme reaction to this book in as much as I was unsure at first whether I was going to enjoy it mainly because of the USA deep south subject matter and just as I was contemplating switching it off, it started to hook me and boy did it ever; I was completely drawn into the story and did not want to put the book down - which I only did once, to sleep.

If you love really good writing, get it!

Worth the time invested.

A very slow start.

I almost gave up several times as I had not expected this novel to dwell on the Vietnamese war so much.

However I was rewarded in the end!

Took a while, but then the magic happened

It took time to get into this book, but all of a sudden I was hooked and enthralled. The only slight criticism I would have is the somewhat lengthy discourse on the Vietnam War, which was unexpected. As a child of the 60s I lived through the era wit my peers, and appreciate the sentiment, but nevertheless I still thought it went on a bit...
