I love Eric Van Lustbader and have read all his books. The book was very engrossing in the beginning. I found the latter 3rd of the book building up to a climax which just petered out :(

Very disjointed, choppy reading, silly, unrealistic. Stopped reading it after a while, a waste of time. This will undoubtedly have been the last time a read a book by Von Lustbader

Great read! I read this book 5 years ago and couldn't put it down. I recently purchased this book for a friend to read over the summer.
    Great Read
This book was one of our book club reads and it was wonderful. We had the honour of having Jeff Buick attend our meeting and what an interesting person. I am now going to be purchasing his other books. Even my husband could not get his nose out of this book.
Not much to it, when all is said...
Sorry to all the folks who liked this one, but it fails with me...
    A few reasons:
    1) As one reviewer pointed out, the author seems to have limited knowledge of weapons (as any ex-military spec-ops type guy will confirm). For example, at one point (in Cairo, I beleive) McNeil and his remaining SEAL partner are armed with "GLock A-17's" and McNeil at one point "flips the safety off" or some such. Well, the Glock family of pistols have what Glock calls a Safe Action, in the trigger assembly. There is no 'safety lever' or button to switch off per se, as in a Beretta 92F or a 1911 .45...I've heard there IS a safety that can be special-ordered from Glock in Austria, but from what I've heard, it's a key type safety, not a lever, button or switch on the gun...
Also, 5.56mm weapons are NOT optimal jungle weapons, as has been demonstrated many times. It IS a highly accurate round (in a well-designed rifle), but it's designed for medium range to long range combat, not close-in work...A much better choice - and one well known to the SEALs of Team Six - would be the H&K family of submachine guns in 9mm...
    2) On entry into Rwanda or the Congo (I can't recall which right off), the team and Dr. Samantha Carlson pass thru customs and passport control, and one of the SEALs seems not to understand why he has to give up one of his nice shirts from his overnight bag to the passport guy, despite the thinly veiled hint from that official, and Samantha 'rescues' him. Well, anyone who's been to those places (and an anti-terrorist expert from SEAL Team 6 would know this) understands the "tax" you pay in those situations. A bit of money, some cigarettes or a pornographic magazine perhaps, a nice bit of clothing...SOMETHING to grease the palms of 'bureacracy' is what gets you though in the Third World...that part of the story was just plain silly. That SEAL operator would have known that from past experience (as the book indicated he had plenty of).
    3) The last fight scene between SEAL McNeil and Delta Force man Garret-whatever was so short as to be almost anti-climatical in my opinion.

Erudite actor Phillip Bird (Casualty, Doctors) is debonair and dashing as jewel thief turned antiques dealer John Mannering, aka the Baron. Here, Mannering finds himself the recipient of a portentous telegram from a dying friend. Death threats follow, and Mannering finds himself at the center of a murderous intrigue, forced to assume his "gentleman crook" alter ego. Bird lends lively role-playing to this dialogue driven drama from master of thrills John Creasey (working here under his pseudonym, Anthony Morton). The British actor delivers fast-paced action and riveting suspense while capably capturing the unique character of Creaseys suave and sly middle-class criminal.

    An Intriguing Read
    The Kill Option
Cash-poor, out-of-work reporter Nick McQueen is feeling desperate when his brother Barry, an ex-marine, suddenly appears and says, "I got a job for you." He explains that the killing of two Mexican smugglers near the border needs to be followed up. Nick is instructed to use false identity and to forward intel in two days. To expedite his assignment Nick visits his drug trafficking informant and is greeted with a blow to the head. This not-so-friendly contact later brings more grief and disaster into Nick's life. At a border cafe Nick questions a waitress who admits the dead Mexicans had been there with another man who "had weird eyes." This fact prompts Barry's boss to name the killer The Jack of Hearts after the one-eyed jack in a deck of cards. As an undercover agent Barry now enlists Nick to actively pursue The Jack of Hearts, who is believed to be on the way to assassinate one of the foreign leaders attending a secret summit in Colorado. The assassin's trademark is the brutal slaying of prostitutes. Charmian, a survivor seeking revenge, links up with Nick as he races to thwart the hit man's objective. Fast-paced,with visceral realism, this dark thriller blends action and suspense throughout, and exposes conspirators at the highest levels -- an intriguing read.
    Catchy Title but Very Ameteurish!
I agree with a previous reviewer - decent plot but the writing was all over the place. The ending leaves a lot to be desired and a lot of the 'dialogue' is repetitious.
    not a great
the plot was okay but the writing style and the action was all over the place. the ending also left little to be desired.
Book read on spur of the moment
This is a terribly written book. The plot was interesting but there is no way Nick would keeping working after his kids were blown up . After Barry supported the conspiracy theory Nick believed Nick wouldn't have wished him dead .
    Scintillating storyline and exciting throughout.
I've always had a love for thrillers in movie and in book form so this book fit perfectly into my interests. I has a gripping plot line that pays off in the end. This is a very underrated novel and is definitely a 'must have.'

    life
What made the experience of listening to Life for a Life the most enjoyable?
these are a good series well read a time pretty graphic but that is a thiller for you
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
it keeps you wondering what next is coming
What about David Monteaths performance did you like?
i like the reader he brings characters to life in voice Gilchrist becomes a person you could see in character
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
as above life for a life
    Another great Gilchrist Novel
I really enjoyed this. If you have read the previous three books you will enjoy this. Like the previous novels the book has a good mixture of characters and some very tense scenes. There are some really chilling characters which are well written. Gilchrist also has a new sidekick who is the most irritable and annoying character - definitely a test for his and the readers patience! A good listen - very good performance from the reader. I will certainly keep reading the series.
Great 4th book in the series
So pleased to see book 4 in the series as I thoroughly enjoyed the first 3. Didn't disappoint! Another great book, and pleased to see the same narrator as he really helped me visualise the characters and the settings. Didn't want them to end and really got into the story- found myself really looking forward to the commute to work!
    Hoping there will be more......
Different to the first three in this series.
I felt this book took a while to get off the ground. I felt myself getting quite annoyed at the new character, Jessie, but then I realised that this is exactly what clever Mr Muir was after.
The book was a bit slower to get off the ground than the first three in the series and Gilchrist was a bit more in the background.

Caleb Talbot, one of the most terrifying men alive, has left behind a bloody trail. Since his prison escape Caleb has done everything in his power to remain a free man. His heinous murders are so evil they are making Charles Manson look like a girl scout. As Caleb's illness evolves he has little or no patients for individuals that cross his path. Murder and mayhem has become a way of life and he won't stop until he gets his ultimate revengethe bitch that goes by the name of Katrina.
Michael and Jameson the law enforcement officers in charge of ending the murder spree, continue to hunt down the cold blooded murderer. Their frustration weighs heavy on both men, as the search for the psychotic killer continues to come up empty. They know it's only a matter of time before Caleb completely snaps.
Due to a twist of fate, one of the surviving victims joins Caleb on his road to revenge. Can Michael and Jameson put an end the killing before Caleb gets his ultimate revenge?
    Members Reviews:
The chilling madman continues his trail of death
"Evil Stalks" takes up the story of Caleb Talbot right where it left off at the end of the last novel in this series by Valerie Bowen. Caleb is not getting any nicer. The trail of blood and death he has left behind him does not lessen as he continues his quest to remain free and take out his revenge on the one person who got away.
Without revealing too much of the plot, I will say that Caleb completely infuriates and sickens me. The author has done an excellent job of showing the evil that is within Caleb even as she brings in an element of, dare I say it, compassionate feelings for a man struggling with something he cannot control. The evil within him is clearly taking over and for a moment I almost felt sorry for him, almost. This is the beauty of the storytelling, horrific crimes mixed with moments of caring for this creature that Caleb has become.
The story of Michael, Sasha, and Jameson continues too as they try to capture Caleb and return him to prison. They know Caleb's final goal, but are constantly playing catch-up. All three of these characters are so well written that I felt as if I was riding along with them, desperately trying to figure out what Caleb will do next.
I give this story 5 stars. The writing has developed significantly since the first novel, Evil really is Unleashed. Another great and terrifying story from the mind of a madwoman, Valerie Bowen.
Evil Stalks (Mind of a Madman)
I loved it, definitely grabbed my attention. I finished it in less that 24 hours. It's very fast paced and keeps you guessing on whats going to happen next. Great job Valerie Bowen, another winner.
