A dreary depressing listen

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Listening to this book made sitting in traffic enjoyable. I actually wanted to go and join AA or talk to someone on drugs helpline after going on this characters journey of self destruction with him.

What will your next listen be?

I will give Apple Tree Yard a go. I listen to a wide variety of books, crime, fantasy, science fiction. All I ask is for a good narrator, an interesting, engaging storyline, and likeable characters. Its hard work when you don't like the characters, or think the plot is silly or the narrator makes you grind your teeth.

What about Andrew Wincotts performance did you like?

Andrew did a good job, he really took you down to the characters depth of depression and self loathing.

Did Wrapped in White inspire you to do anything?

I personally did not enjoy Wrapped in White and hope the author does not attempt to resurrect the main character in any future sequels.

This book does not disappoint. Story takes place in the 1940's

After reading Judy's first book, A Method to Madness, I could not wait to see what Sam would be up to in Sins of the Father.

This book does not disappoint.

Story takes place in the 1940's, but after reading this, you will agree, Sam could be just as charming and successful in the year 2015.

After all, he lives with his grannie who is a great character herself.

Sam continues his PI adventures in Detroit after being hired to find Myrna Lou Stevic, a 17 year old troubled teen, who mysteriously disappears from her porch.

You will find yourself in Sam's shoes from the very beginning of his new case.

But will you figure out what happens before Sam?

I am so excited that Judy's third book, Opened Wounds, will be released this week.

What a wonderful way to start the New Year.

Judith White does it again!

Totally enjoyed Judith White's second book in the Sam Flanagan Files - Sins of the Father! She once again takes us back to 1940's Detroit and a new mystery! Her attention to details in the books' setting is wonderful! Having grown up in the Dearborn/Detroit area I could visualize all the places she writes about. My favorite characters are back. Sam, of course, and his grandmother, but a new favorite has emerged for me too. Sam's Uncle Derwood. A very charming, elderly gentleman that helps Sam just a wee bit with this case. The case is about a teen girl that goes missing and Sam is needed to unravel the mystery about how and why. It's very well written and keeps you guessing until what really happened is revealed. Definitely worth your time to sit and have an enjoyable book to read! Hoping there is another book in the works for the Sam Flanagan Files!

Strangely compelling, but poor narration & writing

I finished this book due to the strength of the overall plot, and the uniqueness of the subject matter.

The narrator was irritating throughout. Her tone tended to sound over-excited, but the main annoyance was the fact it was impossible to discern when a paragraph or chapter began. Not only were there no extra pauses (which might indicate an editing problem), the intonation of the reader didn't change. Every single chapter change, or transition from one scene to another, would catch me unawares, disrupting my immersion in the book.

I also found the dialogue very implausible. Our protagonist uses syntax and vocabulary that might sound natural from a university professor of a bygone era - it's stilted and overblown. I understand she grew up in a hamlet, but who uses that word in day to day speech? A natural word would be "village". I was similarly annoyed to hear "remote croft" when a natural phrase would have been "middle of bloody nowhere". I find it hard to believe our protagonist would have all of the ten dollar words in her active vocabulary. I don't.

If the author had had the confidence and maturity to write our protagonist's dialogue more true to life, I would've enjoyed the book much more. As it was, the OTT adjectives and improbable nouns make me cringe. Paired with a young sounding narrator, it feels a little like listening to a primary school child read an essay, after their teacher told them to use as many adjectives as possible (and gave examples).

This book draws you in

The Poppy Broker is an action packed novel that will keep you glued to every page. With a detailed and complicated plot that takes the reader from slums, to the middle east all the way back to France. More then just an action adventure novel this book has mystery, romance even a little humor. The complex criminal world created in the book extends beyond the middle east into the mafia, and even the police. By the end of the book you will feel that you have known Jean-Franois Duret your entire life and will find yourself not wanting the book to end. A great read and highly recommended!

Armchair travel that keeps you on the edge of your seat

There is no jetlag in this book. But what a way to see exciting places in Europe through the eyes of Thomas Kirkwood, who has written another thriller that will grab your attention and not let go. Unlikely heroes save their hides from a sociopath gunning for the takeover of the world's poppy trade in the twists and turns of this book's plot. This story is tightly written with characters that you'll care about and some that will make your skin crawl. You could drink it with a cup of espresso, but I don't think you'll need it.

Possibly one of the best novels i have ever read!

You know, i just loved this book, Thomas, you just know how to nail a gripping thriller, nice story line, it held me to the end, i just wanted more, Thankyou Sir, for a great read!.

Just needs a white horse and some bon bons to go with it

There is absolutely no way Thomas Kirkwood is not a pseudonym for some some woman who has either read or written far too many romance novels to ever get away from the slave-to-their-sexual-desires woman-in-distress need-an-impossible-hero mentality. Story not bad if terribly unrealistic, but the portrayal of women is a bit distracting.

Excellent Hardboiled Crime Thriller

Mick and Jerzy Sawyer are half-brothers in Chicago, but there's no brotherly love between these two. Jerzy is a career criminal, Mick is a disgraced former cop who went to prison because he took the fall for other cops. The two of them basically hate each other . . . but they're forced to work together when their dying convict father puts them on the trail of a stolen necklace and earrings worth millions of dollars. More complications ensue when Jerzy finds himself in the middle of a gang war and both brothers (wouldn't you know it?) fall for the same beautiful blonde.

BLOOD ON BLOOD is the first novel collaboration by Frank Zafiro and Jim Wilsky. Zafiro has written other crime novels and short stories and Wilsky has authored quite a few short stories. They've joined forces here to produce an excellent hardboiled crime thriller. The narration switches back and forth between Mick and Jerzy, and also between past and present tense, and while those are both techniques I often don't care for, Zafiro and Wilsky make them work very well.

They've also written a sequel to this novel, QUEEN OF DIAMONDS, that's out already, and I plan to read it as well, but I recommend you start with BLOOD ON BLOOD. If you enjoy fast-paced, gritty crime fiction, I think you'll like it a lot.

Ive read hundreds of books but never one with this kind of format. And the story line was super. If the reader is any kind of fan of Soprano's this will be a good read. Wiseguys abound. Enjoyed entire book but the ending was way better than the usual bad guy goes to jail and good guy wins. My advice is "Dont miss this one".

These brothers cannot share

A nasty con man is dying, he has two sons by different mothers who have not escaped his path. One is basically mean and hard nosed, almost totally without pity, gives little thought to others, and killing or maiming is not a problem for him. The other is an ex cop who took the fall for stuff both he and other cops did, he is resentful, but has a more active conscience but is no saint. There are the ethnic gangs, the cops, a gorgeous girl, and various unsavory "friends" and acquaintances of them and their dad. With his dying breath, pop hints of riches in some stolen royal earrings and a necklace that the boys might find.

Surprisingly erotic

This was a quick intense erotic listen, set in Egypt. In this book, a husband and wife set out to unveil the mystery around a sorceress and her death.

Its graphic in parts and this adds to the intensity. Great listen but leaves you with many questions.

Great short story - both hot and chilling

I really liked this short story. I really love reading anything at all to do with Egypt, but I was a little worried that I wouldn't like this one since it was so short and was listed as "erotic." My worries were for naught. This book is definitely erotic, but I wouldn't classify it as "pornographic." While some of the images were disturbing, it was more for the sake of horror. This book is about a wife and husband Egyptologist who go on an excavation to uncover the mystery surrounding a "sensual sorceress," lover to Ramses II, and so evil that she was buried without any clues to her identity. The whole premise of this book is so extremely fascinating to me. I listened to the Audible version, narrated by

Susan Eichhorn Young, and was pleased with the narration. I would definitely listen to more books narrated by her, and I will definitely read more books by Kathryn Meyer Griffith. If anyone is interested in paranormal fiction, or books that take place in Egypt, this is definitely worth your time.

Felt it was the beginning to something bigger

The Bennets are Egyptologists and they are on the hunt for the tomb of a lesser known wife to a well known Pharaoh. She was a sensual magic user who was entombed and nearly erased from history for her wicked deeds. However, the Bennets are dedicated to finding her tomb and opening it.

Julian and Laura are persistent, I will give them that. Of course, in our modern day lives, where magic is all but dead, I too would not expect to false into an evil trap merely by opening an ancient tomb. This book felt like the opening chapters to a much longer story. We get just the barest hints of Egypt in the setting and there isnt really time for sex. I say that because this book is billed as an erotica. (Please note that the author contacted me after reading my review and told me she did not write this to be an erotic story. However, I double checked my Audible edition and the book starts with the Nameless One by Kathryn Meyer Griffith, an erotic short story.

You can't improve on excellence....

But one has to appreciate, or love older writing. John Creasey is amazing...600 plus books with many pseudonyms.

I am in the process of hearing all The Baron series.

Then I shall carry on with Inspector West, Gideon of the Yard, The Toff... having heard some of all these leading characters stories, and there are more I haven't tried yet.

I am truly in awe of Mr Creasey. ( if that was his real name ! )

I must shout my praises for all the readers, performers, narrators for their brilliance in bringing the stories to such vivid life, thank you all, and Audible for making it possible to hear these gems.

I just wish I had more money !
