  • Why Should You Take Probiotics? (Part 1) - Natasha Trenev 7/18/15
Natasha Trenev, who is known as The Mother of Probiotics, joins Mark Alyn to talk about, you guessed it–Probiotics! Probiotics means for life, where Antibiotics means against life. Over 100 trillion Probiotic microbes are in our gut and they control your health. Live Yogurt has probiotics, these do not include the sugary yogurts you find in the local grocery store. The problem with these sugary yogurts is that they feed the bad bacteria in your gut.

Why should you take a Probiotic? Natasha explains how the environment has changed over the last 40 year. These changes have introduced multiple new microbes that have become resistant in our communities. These include MRSA or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) a bacterium responsible for several difficult to treat infections in humans. It is also called oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (ORSA). MRSA is any strain of Staphylococcus aureus that has developed, through the process of natural selection, resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics, which includes the penicillins (methicillin, dicloxacillin, nafcillin, oxacillin, etc.) and the cephalosporins. These strains are unable to resist these antibiotics and are classified as methicillin-sensitive; Staphylococcus aureus, or MSSA. The evolution of such resistant bacteria does not cause the organism to be more intrinsically virulent than strains of S. aureus that have no antibiotic resistance, but resistance does make MRSA infection more difficult to treat with standard types of antibiotics and thus more dangerous.

Natasha talks about the benefits of Kombucha. Kombucha is a tea-based, fermented drink beverage that is often taken for its health benefits or medicinal purposes. Kombucha is a living organism drink made by fermenting tea and with the Kombucha culture. The result can taste like something between sparkling apple cider and champagne, depending on what flavor tea you use. The first recorded use of kombucha comes from China in 221 BC during the Tsin Dynasty. It was known as “The Tea of Immortality”. One of the benefits of Kombucha is that it helps the body absorb vitamins and minerals.

  • Regulation Of The Supplement Industry (Part 1) - Daniel Fabricant 4/8/16
Daniel Fabricant, CEO and Executive Director of the Natural Products Association returns to the Late Night Health show to talk with Mark Alyn about regulation of the supplement industry and more.

Since 1936 the Natural Products Association (NPA) has been working with government agencies to protect the American people. Freedom of healthcare choice is the backbone of this trade association. The NPA helps to maintain good manufacturing practices for both industry and consumers.

The question of are GMOs good or bad is not the issue. The NPA has called for a national labeling law for Genetically Modified foods. It's that simple. Vermont has passed a law requiring foods be labeled in such a manner. This is a step in the right direction, but having 50 different laws will put undo stress on national manufacturers that would have to comply with all the different laws. A national rule would allow one way of requiring the labeling. Major GMO creators are fighting this by spending millions of dollars lobbying state and federal officials.

Dietary supplements are also in the news. Attorney Generals in several states, as well as some members of Congress are calling for more regulation of the industry. These AGs and Congressional members are uninformed of the current rules established by the passing of the DSEA Act in 1994. The current rules are more than adequate and need to be followed. More regulation would be redundant and cost the government more in trying to enforce new rules.

The show also touches on the Health Savings ACT of 2016 which would allow Americans with Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) up to $1,000 reimbursement for dietary and nutritional supplements for preventive care options.

  • Beat Afternoon Energy Drop Naturally (Part 1) - Greg Celaya, DC 8/22/15
Regular Contributor on Late Night Health, Greg Celaya, DC, joins Darrell Wayne to talk about how to beat the afternoon energy drop. Greg discusses natural ways to increase energy and performance.

Most people have an energy crash between 2-4 pm. The solution for most people is to grab an energy drink, coffee or a candy bar. People tend to go for the sweet stuff to get an energy boost. The reason most people have an energy from is from a drop in blood sugar.

The foods you eat can help prevent the afternoon crash. For instance most people have carbohydrates for breakfast; a bowl of cereal, bagel, fruit, muffin, oatmeal. What this does is create the dynamic for your blood sugar to drop later in the day because your body is increasing insulin first thing in the morning with your breakfast choices. A few hours later your blood sugar will drop and most people will choose another carbohydrate or sugar to again boost blood sugar which then again drops a few hours later. This creates a roller-coaster effect in your body.

Dr Celaya sees the problem in breakfast choices going back to what we've been taught is healthy such as fruit and juice. Fruit at the right time in the day and in the right amount is fine but fruit for breakfast is just terrible because you are spiking your blood sugar levels. Over time eating this way leads to hypoglycemia or insulin resistance.

Darrell and Greg also discuss coffee as Darrell used to be addicted to it. When you first start drinking coffee you feel great. But then you become addicted to it as you body now creates a "need" for the coffee and caffeine. You can get to a point where you just cannot function with out the caffeine and it is very difficult to break that habit and give up the coffee. Greg assures Darrell that he will feel better it may just take quite a while for his body to adjust just like with any other addictive thing your try to give up.

  • How To Stop Hair Loss (Part 1) - Jonathan Graff MD 8/22/15
Jonathan Graff, MD joins the Darrell Wayne to talk about hair loss. Why it happens and how to stop hair loss! "Prevention is the first and most important battle in the fight to retain full heads of hair, and by looking ahead we can all save our scalps.

There are different types of hair loss. The most common is a genetically inherited hair loss or male pattern baldness. This created thinning hair on the top of their head. This is all really about genetic factors. Men can start thinning in there 20's where as women are less likely to have as much noticeable hair loss. Hormones also play a huge factor in hair loss as well.

There are a few things that people can do to slow down or prevent hair loss. The right approach must be taken or it wont's work. Since the problem is genetic and hormonal, both of those issues must be addressed. Massaging your scalp and using magic shampoos don't really seem to do much because the problem really isn't a dirty scalp. One thing men can do is talk to your doctor about a prescription drug called Finasteride. This will stop a mans body from producing the hormones that cause hair loss. Rogaine has been around for a long period of time and was actually used to treat high blood pressure. When applied topically it generally makes your hair think its more alive than it actually is. The problem with Rogaine is that it requires a huge amount of commitment; you have to use it everyday. If you stop using Rogaine the results go away. Hair transplant is actually very successful. The key to good hair transplant results is the surgeon you choose. Hair transplant surgery is very artistic and a skilled doctor will yield a very different result than someone who is not as skilled in the procedure.
