Welcome to Lean In, a podcast that explores ordinary people’s extraordinary lives through honest storytelling. My guests share with me their journey of discovery, laughter, personal experiences and healing.
If you are going through a change or challenging period in life, Lean In is the space where we can surrender to the cycle together.
“We are all in the same storm, but we are not all in the same boat” this quote struck me from my conversation with todays guest Nadine McNeil as we were talking about the current global climate – pandemic, racial protests, war, refugee’s and everything else that we are dealing with currently.
Despite what’s happening in our external environments it is absolutely crucial that we continue to do our own inner work, so that we can become the catalyst for collective change. Or as Nadine puts it “self love is the most radical form of activism right now”.
Nadine McNeil, MA, is a yogini, humanitarian, transformation coach, and storyteller.
Nadine’s career with the United Nations guided her towards yoga nearly 15 years ago as a necessary tool for self-care while serving in volatile areas of conflict. And now as a global yoga teacher and change maker her central message is “Consciousness Rising” – the act of stepping boldly into the fullest expression of self, thereby becoming a catalyst for collective change.
Nadine presents at international conferences such as the BaliSpirit Festival and the Caribbean Yoga Conference, leads corporate workshops at companies and teaches at yoga studios across the globe. She also implements a variety of programs, classes and workshops for underserved populations, with past projects in the United States, Jamaica, Haiti and Africa, contributing, for example, to organizations such as the Africa Yoga Project.
There are so many juicy elements to this conversation, get ready to bask in Nadine’s potent wisdom that comes through.
We dive into;
● Growing up in Jamaica and how those roots have shaped her life
● The essence of being Jamaican that allows Nadine to share her pride and hold herself in a way that shows the world who she is
● How Nadine started working with the UN and what she learnt during her time there for over 15 years
● Exploring the “weight of her blessings’ during her emergency response and logistics in countries whilst working with the UN
● Knowing what our personal drivers are and being aware of them
● How a breakdown and burnout led Nadine to come to Bali and take an inventory of her internal world and what was important to her
● Teaching yoga in the ruble and trauma post Haiti earthquakes. How crucial breath is when we are going through a crisis of any scale.
● The healing potency of meditation and journaling
● How Nadine started incorporating yoga into her life and the changes it brought for her mind, body, soul
● The transition from part time yogi to world class yoga teacher
● Why yoga is “the way to the way”
● Self Love is THE MOST radical act of activism we can do right now
● Why we need to be the voice for the people that cannot use their own
● The self love journey and how we can stay committed to the path of honouring oneself

Welcome to ‘Your Space,’ an embodied and direct experience that allows you to engage in a restorative moment of calm, to unwind, reflect and be nurtured.
We are living in a time of great change. Old power structures throughout the world are changing and dismantling and shaking us up in a huge way. We are currently dealing with increased racial prejudice, natural disasters, climate change, a global pandemic on top of all the pain and suffering that is happening around us and inside of us every single day.
It is an uncertain time, a time of great challenge.
It is also a time where, for most of us, we will feel overwhelmed, daily!
Feeling all the feels can leave us completely discombobulated, stressed and helpless. This overwhelm, if left to continue to gain momentum, can have a negative impact on our health, especially our mental health.
Now more than ever we need to take care of all parts of ourselves; our minds, bodies, spirits. We need to flex our capacity to “feel” in order to “heal” and to do that we must start to release this experience of overwhelm so we can return to what is really true. So we can return to love.
If you are nourished, relaxed and centered then naturally you will have energy and access to your own experience of health and happiness.
In this special episode ‘Lean In’, I will be your guide through this intuitive and easy emotional guided visualisation to help you release any overwhelm you may be feeling right now. To unburden yourself so you can access that health and happiness inside once again, no matter what is going on in the world around you.
The perfect addition to help you to lean in.

Today I have the extreme pleasure of introducing you to someone who has experienced the unbelievable and conquered the impossible; Abdi Aden.
Abdi’s world completely changed when he was only a very young teenager and Somalia’s vicious civil war hit Mogadishu. Unable to find his family after a massive explosion happened, he fled quickly and soon joined another 318 people heading to Kenya to search for safety.
On the way, death squads hunted them and they daily faced violence, danger and starvation. After almost three months, they arrived at a refugee camp in Kenya – of the group he’d set out with, only five had survived.
All alone in the world and desperate to find his family, Abdi couldn’t stay in Kenya, so he turned around and undertook the dangerous journey back to Mogadishu. But the search was fruitless, and eventually Abdi made his way – alone, with no money in his pockets – to a refugee camp in Romania, then got to Germany, completely dependent on the kindness of strangers. He was just sixteen years old when he arrived in Melbourne. He had no English, no family or friends, no money, no home. Yet, against the odds, he not only survived, he thrived. Abdi went on to complete secondary education and later university.
He is now a husband, a father to 3 boys and constantly gives back to his community. He became a youth worker, was acknowledged with the 2007 Victorian Refugee Recognition Award and was featured in the SBS second series of Go Back to Where You Came From.
Despite what he has gone through, Abdi is a most inspiring man, who is constantly thankful for his life and what he has. Everything he has endured and achieved is testament to his quiet strength and courage, his resilience and most of all, his warm-hearted, shining and enduring optimism.
We dive into;
● The reality of Somalia in the civil war
● The Mother that took Abdi under her wing when he could not find his own family
● Facing a death squad…and surviving!
● The constant search for his parents and sister
● Arriving in Romania in the freezing cold with no where to go, no language and no money
● The reality of living in refugee camps
● His long journey to Australia and how he got there
● The racism refugee’s face in Australia
● The story of getting into school and eventually university
● How he miraculously found his Mother and sister
● Meeting his Australian wife and having children
● The importance of giving back and sharing his story

Welcome to Lean In, a podcast that explores ordinary people’s extraordinary lives through honest storytelling. My guests share with me their journey of discovery, laughter, personal experiences and healing.
If you are going through a change or challenging period in life or just want a deeper level conversation, Lean In is the space where we can surrender to the cycle together.
Acceptance is something we will all have to experience at some point within our own lives. On the healing journey it is an absolute allay that provides so much space and expansion for our minds and souls.
Acceptance of self, acceptance of what has happened to us, acceptance of the present circumstances. The healing journey is not always an easy to go through process. Quite often we can feel like we are dredging through the dark hallways of pain, loneliness and despair without a light in sight. It can be hard, really, really hard! And that is exactly what I talk with my guest, Clare Boyd, about today.
Clare Boyd is a certified yoga and meditation teacher, intuitive healer, somatic stress response body work facilitator, kinesiology student. Through the energetic pathways and movement of the body Clare has found a way to dive deeper within herself; and her clients.
She believes that to make this world a better place and live from a more empowered state, you must first take care of yourself and embody all parts of you. And in this episode she shares her unique and intimate experience with trauma and long term illness.
In this episode we dive into;
● Growing up in Australia and the impact nature (ocean) has on mental health
● Being a shy kid and how we take on other people’s perceptions of our own personalities
● A tragic accident that left Clare with a severely fractured skull, broken bones and deformed face
● The miracle of healing that occurred within her body
● How we process trauma in different ways, on different timelines according to our own body’s innate intelligence
● The nature of stored trauma experiences when they get “stored” inside our bodies
● How healing is an ongoing multi layered process
● Clares experience with chronic illness and the impact it had on her mental health
● Navigating the “in between” stages of healing and how it can feel like nothing is getting better
● Why it is ok not to be ok
● How self acceptance is a fundamental aspect of getting better
● What recovery looks like and how do we know if things are working?
● Why it is so important to feel what needs to be expressed through us in exchange for healing.

Fear is a tricky thing. It shape shifts as many different emotions, experiences, thoughts and even actions. It can get a hold of us and become destructive if we let it, allowing it’s resistance to block us from feeling, seeing and experiencing our own truth. Right now, it feels like the entire world is in a panic, and it’s so hard to see what tomorrow will bring, let alone the future.
I know with my whole heart and soul that we were made for these times and I encourage us all to take a collective breath, and let the fear and uncertainty work its way through us.
There’s an old saying in the wellness world “in order to heal it you first must feel it”. Through deep presence and ‘feeling’ we are able to come back into alignment and reconnect with the truth of who we are which is ultimately love and unity.
Welcome to Your Space, an embodied and direct experience that allows you to engage in a restorative moment of calm, to unwind, reflect and be nurtured.
This is a Special Edition of Your Space, because we all need a little extra support and nourishment right now. Let’s find a quiet place inside of ourselves and the hyperactivity of our minds, take a deep breath and just listen. Listening is the way forward right now. And we have so much to listen too.
“Stop trying to heal yourself, fix yourself, even awaken yourself. Stop trying to Fast-Forward the movie of your life.
Let go of ‘letting go’. Healing is not a destination.
Be here.
Your pain, your sorrow, your doubts, your longings, your fearful thoughts: they are not mistakes, and they are not asking to be ‘healed’. They are asking to be held. Here, now, lightly, in the loving, healing arms of present awareness…” – Jeff Foster
These powerful words from one of my mindfulness teachers Jeff Foster will help set the tone for what we should be focusing on instead of fear. I know it’s hard, and it’s ok to be scared. But let’s lean on each other and let our fear be the catalyst for hope.
In this special edition of Your Space, I will be your guide through this easy meditation and emotional healing process. Follow me, as I take you towards getting your body realigned, your mind relaxed and your soul stirred.
Let’s all hold each other through these times. Let’s listen, tune in and make the drastic and necessary changes we all need in order to live a harmonious life together; every every single person on this planet.

Welcome to Lean In, a podcast that explores ordinary people’s extraordinary lives
through honest storytelling. My guests share with me their journey of discovery,
laughter, personal experiences and healing.
If you are going through a change or challenging period in life, Lean In is the space where we can surrender to the cycle together.
When we arrive in this world as children our early years are shaped for us. And yet occasionally certain traits of our individual personalities buck the status quo and reveal deep parts of what our soul is here to do in this lifetime.
Activism and the desire to bring about political or social change is usually the response of what we or our ancestors have experienced.
And yet sometimes, it can be born in the minds and hearts of children who just want to make this world safe and free for every person.
Activism comes in many forms and now more than ever as our social structures change and dismantle, social media rises and popular content being created across multimedia platforms is increasing day by day, we have more access to the truth of what is happening within different cultures and communities all across the world my many different voices.
In today’s episode I chat with Bex Tyrer. Scotland born and raised, and Oxford educated with a graduate degree, MPhil in Development studies, Bex Tyrer has been Asia-based for the past thirteen years, where she has fused her passion for Yoga and yoga activism.
Bex’s activism began at a very early age when she started campaigning for environmental issues at the ripe age of 8. After studying at Oxford Bex rode a bike from London to Palestine to spread messages and awareness across Europe of what was happening in Palestine.
Whilst living and working in various communities across the globe that were experiencing intense suffering, injustice, trauma and violence like Nepal, India and Palestine, Bex traversed many aspects of her own inner healing including suffering and healing from anorexia and bulimia.
Yoga was her constant companion throughout her journey and she naturally ended up teaching. Bex has now had the opportunity to teach thousands of practitioners from all over the world, and to share her experience with literally hundreds of teacher trainees.
Bex uses her platform to explore some of the critical issues of contemporary yoga (including issues of inclusivity, gender and the dangers of commodification) whilst working to ensure that postural yoga is supportive of women’s health as well as social and environmental justice.
Her highly recommended training’s and immersions explore topics such as social justice and activism, body image, trauma informed care, the inner yoga of Menstrual Cycle Awareness, the history of yoga and yoga philosophy for the modern world.
In this episode we dive in to;
● Bex early life in Scotland and how her ancestral roots show up in her life now
● How spending time in nature throughout early childhood shapes the way we grow, think and respond to life
● How that strong connection to nature ended up with Bex campaigning for the environment at the age of 8
● Why it is so important to look at our own personal responsibilities and acknowledge the roles we play throughout our own cultures and backgrounds
● How life at Oxford university studying development studies led to Bex joining a Palestine Solidarity campaign group
● Cycling from London to Palestine to spread messages and awareness across Europe of what was happening in Palestine
● Living amongst the trauma, violence and injustices of Palestine
● Suffering from anorexia and bulimia
● If you are not properly nourishing yourself in high pressure jobs and traumatic experiences it will eventually lead to burnout on some level
● The helplessness feeling that often comes in the territory of social work, activism, journalism
● The turning point that made Bex want to truly heal from her eating disorders
● The role yoga played in her recovery
● How working on the streets of Kolkata in the depths of extreme poverty impacted Bex
● Bringing yoga and activism together in service
● How movement and yoga led to the intrinsic feeling of freedom for Bex
● How yoga can be a invitation to truly change us from the inside out
● Why we all need to trust our own growth process.
