  • Your Space Episode 29: Be your best self

There is only one YOU that is unique in this world. Only 1 person out of billions and billions we share this planet with has your unique mind, body and spirit. When you don’t express yourself in a way that is true for you, the world misses out on all the incredible authentic gifts that only you can bring.

Welcome to Your Space, an embodied and direct experience that allows you to engage in a restorative moment of calm, to unwind, reflect and be nurtured.

This session of Your Space is the partner for episode 29 of Lean In: Be your best. Serve the greater good. Rock out wherever you are with Sara Agah Franti

When we express who we truly are with the world we show up in our wholeness, in our raw authenticity. Here’s the thing; the world needs you, not the masks you wear to “fit in” or to be accepted. The essence of you behind all the judgements and expectations and shame we place upon ourselves. If we can be brave enough to reveal who we are, our authentic soul expression with the world, incredible things start to happen! You deserve to be seen, heard, understood and experienced in your best self.

In this accompaniment to episode 29 of ‘Lean In’, I will be your guide through intuitive and easy meditations, emotional processes and guided visualisations to get your body realigned, your mind relaxed and your soul stirred.

The perfect addition to help you to lean in.

  • Lean In 29: Be your best. Serve the greater good. Rock out wherever you are with Sara Agah Franti

Welcome to Lean In, a podcast that explores ordinary people’s extraordinary lives through honest storytelling. My guests share with me their journey of discovery, laughter, personal experiences and healing.

If you are going through a change or challenging period in life, Lean In is the space where we can surrender to the cycle together.

I am always so deeply inspired by people who use their skills, talents and voice to serve the greater good. Someone who embodies this deeply is Sara Agah Franti. As an emergency room nurse, Sara Agah Franti, has witnessed patients in their most vulnerable moments. She has seen the demands that terminal illness asks of family members and close friends and has pledged her life to taking care of people when they are in times of greatest medical need. Sara says, “In my work and in my own family I’ve seen firsthand the toll that living with life-threatening medical conditions takes on both patients and their loved ones. I’ve also seen how families rally together and grow stronger in these times”.

Sara has traveled and has done relief nursing work all over the world, including Haiti, Philippines and Indonesia. Sara is dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of others. Her passion has driven her to pursue her Masters in Public Health, which she hopes to use as a platform to concentrate on health promotion and policy change.

Alongside her husband, Musician Michael Franti, Sara co-founded the “Do it for the love” foundation

Her work, life, and play are influenced by her mantra “Be your best. Serve the greater good. Rock out wherever you are.”

In this episode we talk about Sara’s beliefs, work, cultural background and why she feels it’s so important to always serve the greater good.

    We dive into;

    • Sara’s family background in Iran and how they moved to Canada (where she was born and raised)
    • Her first trip to Iran with her Mum when she was 15 and the ways that impacted her
    • Why she got into nursing and the jobs and places she has worked as a nurse

    • Lean In 28: Healing; Nature, Nurture and being happy with Eilis Haden-Storrie

Welcome to Lean In, a podcast that explores ordinary people’s extraordinary lives through honest storytelling. My guests share with me their journey of discovery, laughter, personal experiences and healing.

If you are going through a change or challenging period in life, Lean In is the space where we can surrender to the cycle together.

During my family trip to Ireland in 2019 I had a strong desire to connect deeply with the ancient and contemporary healing modalities that embed themselves throughout the culture and tapestry of Ireland.  And, as Grace would have it, I met the most beautiful soul to be my guide and show me through the eyes of bonesetters, faith healers, physicians, academics, herbalists, writers and poets, the magic of what they refer to as the “thin place”, the UNESCO-protected area in Ireland called the Burren. What eventuated out of that trip was a huge awakening for me and I am delighted to share the incredible wisdom, research and healing journey of my dear Irish friend, Eilis Haden-Storrie.

Eilís is a trained mediator, counsellor and researcher who has spent many years making a modest contribution to Northern-Ireland peace programmes.  Her home in the Burren is guardian to a plethora of sacred sites and the highest density of pre-Christian holy wells in Ireland. There are endless monasteries, castles, churches, old ritualistic pagan sights and stone circles that hold the legend of the healing power of Ireland. Eilís has learned the value of compassion and reciprocity; giving back to mother earth and to those of us who share in its bounty and I was so lucky to get to walk this la

nd with her when I was there.

In her book; Nurture, Nature & Being Happy, Eilis explores the history of healing from the time of pagans who revered both earth and sea, to early Christian monks who brought their herbal rituals with them from as far away as Jerusalem, to locals who used cures such as blood-letting and poultices to mend the wounds of their animals and families. She looks at where we are now in the healing world and how we can navigate science and fo

lklore in our search for vibrant wellbeing.

In this episode we talk about Eilis research and her own personal healing journey. What it really takes to not only heal ourselves but also the land in which we live. Her personal healing journey has required deep trust, commitment and faith and we dive deep into all aspects of that and more.

      We dive into;

      • The stories of the monks coming to The Burren in Ireland to grow their herbs in the 13th century monastery Corcomroe Abbey.
      • The history of healing in Ireland and how it has changed over the years.
      • How Gerry, a traditional bone setter surprisingly healed Eilis chronic back pain (against her beliefs) and how it is still healed to this day.
      • Folklore beliefs in Ireland about generational healers and who out of the families will have “the gift”.
      • How an anaphylaxis sting from a jellyfish caused an auto-immune response in Eilis and the holistic journey she underwent to heal her mind, body and spirit.
      • What it means to “sit with our personal pain”
      • The multidimensional experience of pain and how we can approach it from many  different ways outside of modern medicine.
      • How important it is to remind ourselves “you’ve got this” when we are in our pain bodies.
      • How Pain is both horror and beauty and our job is to embrace it all, to be fully present with it all.
      • The healing journey is an ongoing commitment
      • Coming together in times of a pandemic crisis.
      • The research of traditional folklore & herbal medicine in Ireland and how it has lasted throughout the ages.
      • How important it is to stay connected to nature throughout our lives and always “give back” as much as we can.

      • Lean In 26: Compassion; Finding peace and resilience through our own personal suffering with Abdullah Sawari

What happens when a young refugee is denied access to education, work opportunities or basic human rights? He co-founds a school so he and his community can continue to learn!

Out of all the shows I have done thus far, this episode is the one I will remember the most. I first watched Abdullah’s Sawari’s TedX talk (link below) and it moved me to my core.  Abdullah Sarwari’s parents are from Afghanistan but he was born in Pakistan and raised in Iran. Four and a half years ago, Abdullah and his family came to Indonesia to seek safety as refugees and, just recently, Abdullah and his family signed their resettlement papers and now call Vancouver Canada home.

Abdullah and I discuss life as a refugee, his parents life and culture in Afghanistan, his childhood in Iran and what it is like to be a refugee moving around as a family.

Abdullah is an articulate and passionate storyteller and I got a deep insight into what life is really like living as a refugee.  When he was living in Iran (around the age of 9) all of a sudden the rules for refugee children changed and he was not allowed to go to school anymore.  He would lie to his friends and tell them he was Iranian in order to fit in and try and settle in school but sadly when one of his best friends found out he was in fact, a Afghan refugee and stopped talking to him.

This is just one of the stories we chat about.

When Abdullah’s family arrived in Indonesia, the then 16-year-old Abdullah realized as refugees, they were not allowed to work or study in Indonesia, meaning he could not complete his studies. In response to this, he and four friends co-founded an informal refugee school—the Refugee Learning Center. Over the last four years, the school has provided free education to over 300 refugee children, men, and women.  The school continues to grow and evolve to this day.

        We dive into;

        • Life growing up in Pakistan and Iran as a Refugee
        • When you’re a refugee where do you belong?
        • The impact of losing his Father suddenly
        • What life is like in Indonesia as a refugee with no human rights
        • How living as a refugee impacts mental health
        • Why education is so important
        • Starting the Refugee Learning Centre
        • How Abdullah went from “bell boy” to principal in 3 years
        • Being selected out of 300 other candidates to work with UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) in Indonesia
        • Resettling in Canada
        • The stigma and negative label of “Refugee”
        • Breaking down the stereotype of what it means to be a refugee

        • Your Space 26: Compassion

Sometimes life will give us circumstances and experiences that are beyond our control.  Our strength, our integrity and our resilience shows in our ability to respond with compassion as opposed to reacting with aggression. How we respond to life is our choice.  It is up to us to determine the quality of our experiences and keep our perspectives framed through a lens os love and generosity.

Welcome to Your Space, an embodied and direct experience that allows you to engage in a restorative moment of calm, to unwind, reflect and be nurtured.

This session of Your Space is the partner for episode 26 of Lean In: Compassion; Finding peace and resilience through our suffering with Abdullah Sawari.

We never can truly know what is happening in the life experience of others, likewise no one can ever fully understand everything we experience in our own minds, bodies, hearts and souls.  That is why now more than ever it is crucial that we lead with tender compassion towards each other and most importantly, towards ourselves.

In this accompaniment to episode 26 of ‘Lean In’, I will be your guide through intuitive and easy meditations, emotional processes, guided visualisations and the occasional blunt truth to get your body realigned, your mind relaxed and your soul stirred.

We are in control of the kind of life we live. Sometimes it’s hard to make those tough decisions that take us in an unknown direction. They still must be made in order for us to stay true to ourselves.

Welcome to Your Space, an embodied and direct experience that allows you to engage in a restorative moment of calm, to unwind, reflect and be nurtured.

This session of Your Space is the partner for episode 25 of Lean In: Trust in the Unknown: Elayna Carausu on Trading Stability for Adventure.

If you feel life is pulling you in a new direction, don’t be afraid to follow it. The unknown can be terrifying. However, the rewards of trusting our instincts and taking a leap of faith can be immeasurable. So, take that leap.

In this accompaniment to episode 25 of ‘Lean In’, I will be your guide through intuitive and easy meditations, emotional processes, guided visualisations and the occasional blunt truth to get your body realigned, your mind relaxed and your soul stirred.

        • Lean In 25: Trust in the Unknown: Elayna Carausu on Trading Stability for Adventure

When everyone around us is living stationary lives, it’s hard to imagine there is another way. But if you’re born with a longing for adventure, staying in one place can feel like torture.

In this episode, I had one of my favourite conversations to date, with the beautiful Elayna Carausu. Elayna and her partner, Riley, have been sailing around the world and filming their lives for their incredibly popular YouTube channel, Sailing La Vagabonde, since 2014. With 1.35 Million subscribers watching their weekly videos, Elayna, Rilley and their adorable toddler son Lenn, let the world into their adventure, as well as their daily lives.

Elayna always knew she was meant to live a different kind of life. Growing up in Australia, she fell in love with the ocean, which inspired a sense of wanting more. Exploring her love of the open sea, Elayna experimented with scuba diving, freediving and eventually sailing. When she took a job for a summer in Greece, she met Riley, who shared a similar view of the world. After returning to Australia, she consulted with a few friends that convinced her to take a chance and join Riley back in Greece. The rest, as they say, is history.

I chat with Elayna about some of the incredible things she’s seen on the adventures with her family. The most memorable one being sailing Greta Thunberg across the Atlantic to the UN Climate Summit. Greta wrote her now-famous speech while with Elayna, Riley and Lenny on that epic journey on the sea.

We explore what it means to live the kind of life you really want, and what comes with those decisions. She tells me what it’s like to be a mum of a toddler while living on the open ocean. We also touch on how she manages to take care of herself in this alternative lifestyle that she and her family make look like a joyful, wild ride.

Other great bits of our conversation:

          • How Elayna always felt like an outsider growing up
          • Her chance opportunity to move to Greece
          • The funny story of how Elayna and Riley met
          • The camera that started it all
          • The story of their very first video
          • How Elayna handles self-care on the boat
          • The epic story of sailing Greta Thunberg across the Atlantic

          • Lean In 24: Your Space Special Edition: Finding Nourishment and Support In Times of Confusion, Fear, Panic and Uncertainty

The fear of the unknown can drive us mad if we let it. Right now, the entire world is in a panic, and it’s so hard to see what tomorrow will bring, let alone the future. I encourage you all to take a collective breath and let the fear and uncertainty work its way through you. Once we’ve done that, we can try to replace it with a sense of hope and unity.

Welcome to Your Space, an embodied and direct experience that allows you to engage in a restorative moment of calm, to unwind, reflect and be nurtured.

This is a Special Edition of Your Space, because we all need a little extra support and nourishment right now. Find a quiet place, take a deep breath and just listen.

“All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting. All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way. All over the world, people are waking up to a new reality. To how big we really are. To how little control we really have. To what really matters. To love. So we pray and remember that.”

These powerful words from Father Richard Hendrick will help set the tone for what we should be focusing on instead of fear. I know it’s hard, and it’s ok to be scared. But let’s lean on each other and let our fear be the catalyst for hope.

In this special edition of Your Space, I will be your guide through this easy meditation and emotional healing process. Follow me, as I take you towards getting your body realigned, your mind relaxed and your soul stirred.

Let’s all hold each other through these times.
